I need to replace my beloved Dell Vostro 1710. The old girl is still working fine but she just can't cope with modern life.

I will only be using it for paying poker, watching YouTube, Sky go and browsing.

It needs to be quiet and reliable with good battery life.

It doesn't need to be unnecessary expensive.

I would prefer 18in screen but it's not a deal breaker.

Get one that you can flip the screen over and use as a tablet. SSD is a must.

Budget?

I can just about afford the cheapest one that fills my requirements unless there is a very compelling reason to buy a more expensive one. If there is, I can probably afford that.

Thanks Mr Ines.

Is the latter crap and the former overkill?

Which one would you say is best value for money?

The former is pretty much the 2019 equivalent of your Vostro - and probably the same price as it was in 2008. You might be able to spend a little less and still get an SSD and a full HD screen but I didn't spot one with a quick look around.

I hope I haven't pissed Mr Ines off with my factious reply, but answering questions like "What's your budget?" or the classic, "How much do you want to spend?" seem to defeat the object IMO.

If I say I have a budget of £200 someone will find me a £200 laptop. If I say it's £600... Well, you get my meaning.

I think you are probably right, except that my Vostro is 18in.

Thanks Mark. It looks like I would have to pay a niche market premium for a 17/18in lappy, although I must admit to liking this quote from the site you linked me to.

When shopkeepers see Tom making his way to their shops, I bet they pull the shutters down & hide.

I'm after some tea-bags, but it depends, see....
