Any help is appreciated on this one - I have a budget from the sponsor of up to £200 but obviously if I can spend less I will no doubt convince them to donate the difference to the charity.

there is a model shop in Candleriggs Glasgow that sells new and second Hand trains and is about Ten minutes walk from Cincins

the Engine you want is  GWR KING "JAMES II" No 6008 and A second hand one will cost you around 30 quid though.  There is also a model that you can get which is already on a plinth and its made of Coal.  it looks great and because its Black it could belong to any railway including the Great western,  hard to get and costs around 40 quid but I might know someone who can get you one

Thanks Cyber, that's most helpful, & "King James" (6008) would be a fine example, though King George (6,000) would be better, especially if it had the commemorative bell on the front plate. But the one in black would no be noy good - is HAS to be GWR (Great Wesern Railway, aka God's Wonderful Railway) Green for it to be authentic. The GWR Main Line Loco's were famous for their livery, amongst many other things.

Ahh the King George V 6000 not only had the bell but also had the cabside medallions as well.  If memory serves me it was originally sent to America and then came back again. If you can get the model fitted with a singe chimney its much prized as it was fitted with a double chimney in the mid fifties..   Ran right up to 1962ish as well so must have had a fair mileage.  The New Great Western trains are BLUE..  shocking

wow  has everything...  great find.  might write to the guy and let him know the mileage was  1,910,424 miles,   hehe  just found that out.
I went through a phase of Railway modelling and I have a huge set in my garage  around 22 feet by 12..  great fun..  I must talk to you guys at the Blonde Bash about my stamp collection and display of various interesting bottle tops  please remind me    <GRIN>

That's all very true Cyber. My Grandfather - Grandfather Angelll after whom my youngest (well only now) Cat was named, both fired that Loco, and later drove it too, and in fact he accompanied it to America in the mid-thirties, during which time it gained the famous bell.

And my Dad did both too, as a Fireman, & later as Engine Driver, & spookily, for a while, Grandad Angell was the driver & Dad was the Fireman on that beautiful machine. In those days, Drivers had their "own" engine, & thery were both extremely proud of KG5.

Both Grandad & Dad were also the "Royal Drivers" (that's "Link One - Links were the grades of Drivers) on the GWR, which sort of gave us special status on the Railway Estate which we lived on in Acton, West London. It was built there as it was in close proximity to thge local "shed", Old Oak Common (shed code 81a), the creme de la creme of sheds, with the possible exception of Swindon, which had a special aura, as that was where all the wonderful GWR Locos were designed & built.
