How Many Hands Per Hour?
«
on:

I often say that a 15 minute clock Online is equivelant to a 1 hour clock Live, 20 minutes to 75 minutes, etc. (Based on how many hands per hour). I don't really know though, it just seems about right.
I have been playing a lot of Online MTT's recently, & have mentally adjusted to the pace of the game being so much faster.
When I played In Dublin last week, I actually, for the first time ever, found the pace of the game caused me to lose concentration. I generally reckon around 90 seconds for a "regular" Live hand, so 40 hands per hour, less as the comp reaches the sharp end & the decisions get more tricky. At the end of Day One, I was on Stephen Pearce's table, & he was doing his usual showboating & blathering & demanding Rulings every other hand, & we played NINE hands in the hour before I busted!, but that's an exception. (And yes, Stephen's ruse worked, exactly as intended, by messing with our heads).
Sloppy suggested to me yesterday that I need to use my i-Pod more in Live Poker, as an aid to concentration, & "settling down". Maybe he's right.
Does anyone have a rough guide to how many hands per hour we can expect Online? And is my 40 hands per hour "Live" about right?
I'm trying to establish, just for my own benefit really, what the equivelant Live Clock would be for, say, a 20 minute 3,000 starting chip Online Tourney would be.
Why? I just know that Online, give me 3k in chips & 20 minute clock, & I EXPECT to cash, I have the patience & discipline & gears to cope. What would the Live equivelant of that structure be?
Thanks.

40 hands per hour live does sound high??
Take a 20 minute level at the Gutshot on a full table. Most thursday night freezeouts, you would be lucky to see a full round per level - so you would be lucky to hit 30 hands in 1 hr.

I had a long talk with Malcolm Harwood about this, he really studied it when he first moved to online poker. He says that 30 hph is avarage, and a really expert dealer can do around 40 at best.

40 is definitely alot
i get the button round once + 1 seat in a 20 minute level. that's 33 hand an hour and I'm one of the quicker dealers. a proffessional dealer probably gets two or three more an hour out, but this is assuming there are no big pots, complicated side pots, splits or lengths dwells. 30 an hour average over the tourney seems reasonable for a pro dealer. so given that all the above take the computer no extra time its a case of working out how many times round for a level. if I was dealing an hour clock I'd expect to get the button round three times.
I'm curious not. i'm going to sit at a STT and see how long it takes for the button to get round

I have to totally disagree with this, from a personal point of view anyway. I love my iPod, but I just can't listen to it at the poker table and I find it bizarre that people use them at the table. I tried using it once but I found that I lost the 'feel' of the table and I was missing out on snippets of conversations that might prove helpful and almost 'hermitising' myself in the process by being so withdrawn. As an aid to concentration, for me, it just means it's distracting me from where the focus should be.

Concentration is one thing I find harder online than live, now maybe as Tikay says, its the pace of the game.
Live, I can concentrate like anything, no matter how slow the play is - I love to watch people and how they react, talk, breathe etc... Online this is missing for me, and causes me to "blow up" alot more online. Something I am working on

first 10 hands took 11 minutes
thats 55 hands an hour
1.8x as many hands (based on 30 an hour)
so an hour clock live is equal to roughly 108 mins online
or
a 20 min online clock is 36 mins live
I'd have gone on longer for acuracy but I only lasted 10 hands KQ on KQ10 flop, beat by J4 blah blah blah straight blah river outdraw blah
probably just double it

I am exactly the same
I get bored far easier online and my concentration wanders.
Live, I observe and never get bored...no matter how glacial the pace

Yeah the odd diffrence is late on in an online MTT the hands/hr goes up a lot, live it goes down as evreyone feels the need to dwell for 30 seconds every hand.
I think you get a lot more play online in those later stages, this gives a big edge to the aggresive player.
This probably accounts for the hoardes of swedes who bust out in live comps when they cant be as aggresive.

Well now, that IS interesting.
At the blonde MasterClass recently, Dave gave a sermon on Tourney Poker, & was asked about the use of I-Pods.
He replied along the lines of "I HAVE to use an i-Pod as an aid to concentration, otherwise peeps want to talk to me, & I miss the little nuances & tells that I can spot if I am "isolated" from the table banter."
In fact, if he arrives at a tourney
sans
i-Pod, or his battery dies, he gets all of a tither, & will borrow mine or Jens. Though he fell asleep listening to mine, & returned it in disgust, & was astonished to hear the sorta thing "Little Miss Innocent" Jen has on hers!

I have trouble playing live now as i find it too slow. Online i either play two tournaments at the same time or 1 tourney and 1 cash game.
The hand per hour rate for a live no limit hold'em tournament should be between 30-35 hands per hour with good dealers.

I sometimes, a lot of the time, have the ipod earplugs in to make it appear like I have music on but actually I don't. I do this to prevent people small talking me and making me lose my concentration and so I can observe without people knowing.

agreed - i feel i just lose the feel for the table when listening to my ipod - its almost dumbing down one of your key senses in hearing
