Wednesday 28th June (continued)

Hmmm. Now I see the advantage of stopping at Hooters. You get up and trot down to breakfast and you are guaranteed to have a smile on your face before you sit. Pretty girls everywhere.

So, did this year get off to a flyer with the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold ‘Em event?

Well not quite. I decided to play quite tight and did so. I had won a small pot with a pair of pocket 7s and was stable at around 1500 chips, the starting stack. The blinds had just gone up to 25/50 and I found Q-9 of clubs. Everyone passed to me and I raised to 150. The Big Blind called and the flop was T-J-4 one club. The turn was a 7 of clubs and before I knew it I was all-in on a 17 card draw. I didn’t get any help so was out of my first 2006 WSOP event in only 65 minutes.

Fortunately, the early exit gave me opportunity to play some cash games. I managed to win over 7000 dollars and quit before an early dinner.

Thursday 29th June

Today’s tourney was the $1,500 Limit Hold’em. I did manage to make the first break but it was another poor performance.

I lost most of my chips with pocket Queens on a Ten high board. Unfortunately, my opponent had pocket Tens. I think if I was on top form I would have saved 2 big bets (limit) in this hand.

In the WSOP events you get the equivalent amount of chips to the size of the buy-in, i.e. for a $1,500 buy-in you get just 1500 chips, for a £3,000 buy in you get 3000 chips. This means that in the small buy-in comps it is really important to win the first hand you play. If you can get going the structure is very slow and long and allows plenty of play. Unfortunately though, you must get off to a good start… which I have not in the first two tourneys.

The Pot Limit Omaha cash game was beckoning though. I ran into a bit of a rush and had a touch of luck. I somehow managed to win around $12,000 in less than 3 hours.

Friday 30th June

Today’s tourney was $2,500 6 handed NLH. I really enjoy this new style of tourney. As you are in the blinds over a third of the time you are forced to play a lot more hands. There is no casual throwing away of A-Ts and A-Js in this tourney.

The reigning champ, Joe Hachem, was sat at my table, so that was quite interesting. I had never played with him before and was generally impressed with his play. Eventually he knocked me out. I had been hanging on short stacked after a couple of dodgy beats when he raised my big blind for the umpteenth time. I hadn’t really made a move on him in the previous 4 hours so I thought I could force a pass. I moved all-in for approx 3 times his bet. He gave it a short dwell before reluctantly making a good call. His A-9 was more than a match for my embarrassing T-4 and I exited stage left.
