Title: European Championships, 5k Main Event Live Update, DAY TWO
Post by: tikay on August 06, 2005, 01:06:07 PM

Hi all,

We start - oops, sorry - THEY start, at 3pm today. We will be there, suited & booted, & be with you the whole way.

Any messages for players, if you want to find out how a particular player is getting on, just ask.

We posted the Chip Counts at the end of Day One on the Day One thread, I will try & copy them onto here, as an easy point of reference for you.

A big thanks to the Staff at The Vic - they were just great yesterday, Brian especially. And Scott Cowan, he's the Casino Mansager. He's a New Zealander, or South Afrucan, summat like that. GREAT bloke.

Jen's a bit uncomfortable at The Vic, but she enjoyed yesterday too. She had to wear proper shoes - right frumpy they were too - instead of her usual jesus shoes. Not her style at all. And a big up to Robert HM, who ran around for Jen alll evening. One word from Jen & the blokes will do anything, she has that manner about her. Not me, mind. I just ignore her. Oops, gotta go, Jen wants me. Now. Right now. On the way, Dear.

Title: Re: European Championships, 5k Main Event Live Update, DAY TWO
Post by: tikay on August 06, 2005, 01:40:40 PM

Yes Matt, we will. A Live pdate of the Saturday/Sunday Main Event is planned, subject to Grosvenor's approval. Maybe we will cover Wednesday's Heads Up Challenge (Luton v Notts, the Champions....), too.

I will play most days, I hope - I love playing Luton, & Jen may be playing one or two days as well.

We just need to see if Jen will cover the Luton Main Event for us, if she is available/willing etc. So BE NICE TO HER today, eh?

Nowab looks in good shape he may have come out of retirement.

Maureen - yes, I hope so. That's the plan, anyway. The 425 Crew may be there too, we are trying to get permission. And there is a Ladbrokes Party on the Friday, down in London, to trumpet the Ladbroke Poker Millions, to which I have been invited, as have Poker 425. So Poker 425 might want me to be in London (hope not...) or Sheffileld (yes PLEASE), or, more likely, nowhere at all. In which case, YES, Sheffield it is!

Nick - will do. A BAD day for Notts (I fully deserved to get busted), but a GREAT day for our buds from Blackpool. Good Luck to them.

Hi At It Gamblor - LOVE the new pic - Happy Memories, eh? Play The Vic on Sunday? Doubtful, we will be covering this, but then again, maybe Jen will want me out of the way. Or SHE may play it, who knows. We will decide tomorrow.

Maureen - hmm, thinking of you, & you know why. xx

And in reply to your SECOND PM Robert, actually, Poker 425 are NOT here this weekend, it's the Poker Channel this time, they are making a big production of it, so we (425) have sort of "stepped aside" - nice way of outting it.....

We DID try to interview the rerson you mentioned, but not the greatest interview we ever did......

At It - Yes, I have the Vegas P:ics - mail me to my private e-mail so I don't forget please. You got my e-address? If not, send me a PM. I DO have the pics, but I will forget otherwise.

The shoes - don't even TRY it, they wont let you in. Jen's current shoes are lovely really - my Nan had a pair very similar.

Morning all - with no fuss the cards are in the air (just compare the half hour fanfare in the US before a hand gets dealt in a big comp) and the remaining 66 players are off.

Therefore the average chips for this point: nearly 20,000.

i will do, i'll pm u in a bit... lol i'll nip to my grans and bring jen another pair what size? might have to nip out and buy a new pair today... i hate to be out done in the footwear department!

someone knock out pescatori(yank with italian bandana on) i knocked him out in vegas, reraised me as soon as he came to my table... i called him with a pair of 3s and sent him to the rail, or another chair as he'd just paid for a 20min massage lol! He reraised me with a7 off and was moaning when he got knocked out, i was chip leader and he thought he could push me off the hand... bloody yanks, and in a bandana even worse! ;D

Within ten minutes Simon Trumper up to 39k.   We have made some informed picks for you:

Tikay's - DC, The Camel, John Shipley

He got to go first so I feel like I should pick different ones:  Peter Roche, John Kabbaj, and Nice Norwegian Sverre Sundbo.

What about you lot?

El Blondie moved to the Camel's right...

Micky Wernick down to 6,000 after two accidents. Having raised with QQ, he eventually passed to a re-raise (the guy showed him KK). Then he got involved in another pot vs someone who happened to have flopped a set. Not a good start to the day, but he's still there (on the table of Neil Channing, S. Sundbo, Womble, S. Osman, and D. Smith).

Bad News. Micky raised with TT, flop came KKx, geezer moved in, Micky had to let go.

Then he flops top pair & straight draw with JT - Matey Boy rivers the flush. Micky Wernick OUT. (this post by tikay, Jen's on patrol). Micky had had a GREAT week though, & we (Poker 425) did a really nice, 15 minute, in-depth interview with him yesterday. In my Hotel Bedroom, of all places. Very cosy.....

Catching up on day 1's posts i c, perhaps a little bizarrely, that there has been some debate on Mickey Wernick's nickname (then again i suppose poker nicknames r more interesting than whether to have a steakwich or a a kebab!) Anyway, for those not in the know, this slightly unappealing tag comes from play in cash games a few yrs back when a fellow player referred to Mickey as the "worm" which, for any fishermen or women out there, is a form of bait! Point being that when Mickey was in a cash game it was a good game with plenty of action.

As 4 whether he likes it i would say he isnt keen on it (would anybody be?) but he doesnt reall ycare. I think "legend" of "godfather" would be more appropriate as he has been there seen it done it from heads up battles with Stu Ungar to poxy 10 re-buys to what he's been up 2 so far this yr around Europe & Vegas!

Whatever, good luck 2 him!

ps. Believe it or not 20+ yrs ago he was Mickey "The Kid" 'cos of youthful looks, honest...
ps. Personally if steakwich tasted like those they serve at walsall i'd plump for smelly greasy kebab anyday!!

defo, i may have to carry a hancachief(i'll join u with the bad spelling!) so if i'm ever on his table i can put it on!

would spoil my hair tho lol!

Think he's on camels table so hopefully he'll do the trick!

wombl was a given on the final, they gave him too many chips to start with lol! he can nearly pass his way to the money, with a few timely all ins!

Hello guys, mister eggie eggen here. Yeah I finally joined the forum after bumping into tikay in monte carlo, luton and in vegas now in july. I stumbled in here now to see if you had any  updates on our norwegian hope, Sverre Sundbo, would be nice if you could keep an eye on him.

(and to clear up some things, yeah ironside spoke with my sister linda, but the girl that was with me in luton was Ingvild, my gf. We are both going to barcelona for the ept and hope to see you guys there!)

Simon Nowab 42,000.

Henning! How are you?. LOVELY to hear from you. I actually sat next to a Norweiganer yesterday, real nice guy, your sort of build & age. I tried one steal against him. He caught me, oops.

"Well balanced humour"? You are mixing me up with someone else, I think....!

When you next in the UK?

I was in Norway - Bergen - a few weeks ago. I LOVE Sweden.

Hehe...:-)

Im very well Tony. I hear rumours from all over the world that u keep up your "Norway is the capitol of Sweden" speech:-)

I actually had to defend u in a Norwegian forum cause they ment u couldnt be very smart due to the Norway - Sweden "mix ups":-)

We have had a good week down there with a 2 and 4 place in the VC cup, and if our good friend Mr. Gentle Sundb keeps his cool today, he can get as far as he wants.

Im going to play some EPTs, but we all had a very good time in Walsall, and we all want to go back, so I think it wont be long till u see us again...

Simon's exit....

Max Bandana Man Pescasomebody makes it 2k, Simon R'd it up to 7k, Bandana Man calls.

Simon is holding AK.

Bandana Man is holding 9-9.

Easy to work the rest out if I tell you the flop. 9-T-K. Oucharoonee. Hard to get away from I guess.

Achilleas Kallakis just doubled up too - now on a massive 70k. And just think, he was all-in blind yesterday...

After Lucy Rokach took out Womble, I watched her take down pot after pot, the latest one being on a 2 3 5 6 board. She raised all-in from the button after the big blind made a 7k bet, and there followed *another* reluctant pass and a chunk added to her stack.

Mr Colclough back up to 35k after a bit of luck against Dan Alspach (known to Tikay for some reason as Deckchair Man).

Darren Rogers all-in with AA vs Q8.  Board came 10 8 8 ...8 7, so Darren is OUT.  Not sure when the money went in, but we think on the flop is a good guess.

I'd played an hour, had 4 cruel rivered beats when holding the nuts on the rurn, and tried a tinsy winsy steal. He snapped me off in a trice. "I warned you" he said..... LOVELY fella.

Great player, too, from what I saw.

Lucy Rokach  65,000

Post by: Djinn on August 06, 2005, 07:57:40 PM
They're not sitting on their hands here - been several all-ins already but with no eliminations resulting, yet...

Nouri doubled up with 66, flopping a set.  Then Paul Zimbler (short stacked) went all-in with A9 and found himself up against Peter Roche's AQ.  Lucky the board came with four 2s on it then....

Keith Hawkins just received one of several dirty looks as someone gave up their blind.  "You look at me as if I'm stealing it!" he protests.

Title: Re: European Championships, 5k Main Event Live Update, DAY TWO

Lots of action during this tour of the room...

Sonny Osman OUT - raising all-in preflop with 9 10, he was called by Stuart Nash's Q 10.  The flop came with a 9, then with a Q and the table break came soon after.

John Shipley OUT too, a couple of seconds before him.

There are now 27 left.  Some counts:

Michael Taaffe     17,600  (the VC-sporting man reported earlier)
Stuart Nash         65,000
Harry Demetriou   58,000
Camel                 27,000
Max Pescatori      40,000
Mike Magee         37,000
Lucy Rokach        60,000
Edward Moncada  40,000
Achilleas Kallakis    50,000
Sverre Sundbo     75,000
Paul Zimbler         10,000
David Benyamine  36,000
Simon Nowab      25,000
El Blondie            32,000
Dan Alspach        28,000
Peter Roche        38,000

There is a rumour that they may carry on until the final nine...but this is unconfirmed and disagrees with the official-looking bit of paper I copied that information off this morning.  If that is the case then there will be one more late night and a shorter Final.

Incidentally, none of us watchers really noticed Tony G making a move, and he's been pretty modestly-stacked all tournament - and suddenly he's got a little mountain of chips.  Possibly the leader, actually.

Yes - it's down to final 9 or 3am, whichever comes quickest.  They are paying 13 places, it looks like now, and the prize money is actually in a slightly higher band due to there being 122 starting runners, not the 117 I initially misinformed everyone about.  First place is 260,000

Dan Alspach OUT - he moved all-in with A 10 hearts, and David Benyamine called him with pocket 9s. The flop came with 2 hearts, and he was chanting "heart, heart" as you do. No help, a pair of heartless sevens coming on the turn and river.

There are now 24, I believe.

Just out of interest - here is the prize structure, correct as far as the sheet which appeared on the central table.

1  260,000
2  121,178
3   68,775
4   39,300
5   26,200
6   22,925
7   19,650
8   16,375
9   13,100
10  7,500
11 - 13  5,000

Paul Zimbler OUT - his KJ ended up making two pair, but he was up against a flopped set of Aces and a straight caught by, guess who - Tony G.

Mr. Sundbo tells us that his table is made pretty tough by Tony, who is just running over it mercilessly - getting hands and getting paid. He is definitely the chip leader - chip counts coming when they all get back from the short break which they are on.

Post by: Djinn on August 06, 2005, 09:36:51 PM
The players are returning to their seats, but I took advantage of the break to have a count of Tony G's chips - we estimate 175,000. Many thanks to Brian here for counting them down. He's official so he's allowed to touch the chips.

Keith 'The Camel' Hawkins OUT... while I was watching the all-action all the time Tony G, Keith took a shot at a double up with JQ, unfortunately "that bloke from the telly" had AQ (still trying to determine who he means) and knocked him out in 20th.

So 19 left, blinds 600 - 1200 with a 75 ante.

Jen interrupting here - Chandra Khajuria OUT after Tony G got him all-in on the river in this fashion:

The board was 5 9 K 9 with a Q on the river. Tony G checked the river, C. Khajuria bet 2k, was raised by 10k (the betting up til this point was fairly restrained). Then Chandra moved all-in and got insta-called by Tony with Q9 - the losing hand was J9. Extraordinary.

Simon Nowab on a dangerous-looking 16,000

Tony G has 183,000 and the lead.

El Blondie doubles up to 45k-ish..... Harry Demetriou finds himself calling Dave's JJ all-in with the marvellous 5 6 of hearts (presumably having raised preflop first, although I was rushing to the table at this point). The flop brought no help, but Dave told me "he's just dropped to 80,000, don't feel sad. Thank you."

Nowab doubles up too - he moves in preflop and David Benyamine squeezes an Ace, which he tells Simon - who tells him in return, "I hope you have a Jack with it." "I do." David calls and Simon shows AQ to double through. Although there were some grumbles about talking about one's hand etc. that has to be one of the more amusing stories of today. Information brought to you by Tikay.

Simon Nowab makes it 5.5k, David Rudling flat calls, David Benyamine goes all-in for 30kish. Simon dwells and passes, David Rudling turns over AA vs Benyamine's JJ... Flop brings the dreaded J but the A also makes an appearance knocking David Benyamine OUT in 16th... and Simon is STILL short stacked but STILL in.

dont talk to Red Dog about santa, that man is so mean, when his kids were small he used to go outside on xmas eve, clap his hands loudly, then go inside and tell them that someone had just shot santa... so no presents.

And...... the only reason he got double glazing was so that the kids couldnt hear the ice cream man :)

Incidentally, Simon's holding in that previous hand was AQ.

On a board of 8 8 8 5 5 Simon Nowab moves in and eventually gets a call from Peter Roche. Simon has 9 4 vs Peter's J 3 - split!

Tikay walked over to table 2 to find Peter Roche and Dave Colclough in a pot with a board of Q J 6 5.
There's a reasonably-sized pot built up already and on the turn Peter Roche has essentially put Dave all in.  He calls; the cruel Q J 2-pair has found Peter with 5 5 - having turned the set to knock him out in 15th place.  Eek.  I think there's a break soon - they look like they need it and I could do with a pizza.

Little loud chatting coming from the tables regarding a potential 5000 for the bubble (14 players left) - think there's too much arguing going on and the TD has set them off again.

In situations like this, surely it makes sense to take 5k off the top prize for the bubble boy, this would speed the game up and save all the waiting for hand for hand play.

The short stacks at this tense bubble stage (we're hand-for-hand) are Achilleas Kallakis with 32,000 and Simon Nowab with around 16,000. Just to keep you on the edge of your collective seats.

An interesting tidbit discovered by Tikay - if two people go out on the same hand on the same table - the player with the higher chips is placed first and gets the money, but if two players go out at the same time on two different tables, the 13th place will be split.

S. Sundbo makes it 5k to go, Harry D raises to 21k total. Sundbo moves all-in for 40 or 50k more, Harry has a big dwell and calls with 9 9. AK for Sondbo - 7 2 K T A come out and that's a huge double-up for Sundbo.

Harry now looks to have about 20k - he has joined the low stacks, and brings up the relevant point that the slow hand for hand play might suggest a slowing of the blinds... unlikely to be accommodated I reckon.

Yes 122 runners.

Max Pescatori puts all his chips in the middle on a flop of 9 7 5.  He is insta-called by Moncada with a set of fives, but he has top set of nines and doubles through (yelling "no six" when the 8 comes on the turn).

Harry Demetriou OUT in 14th -

Moving all in for the rest of his chips with pocked 8s, he found a caller in Peter Roche's KdJd, which hit a K on the flop to knock one of the chip leaders through most of the competition out on the bubble.  Two races lost in a row and he's unfortunately the last unpaid player.  Money back to the next three.

well getting his money back wasnt what harry was playing for but brutal way to go out on bubble

Except in VERY exceptional circustances I always shoot for first place and it's pretty pointless trying to last and crawl into the money imho.

As for my standard of play I thought it was pretty good overall except for a dreadful play against El Blondoe himself where I should have laid down a 6h5h v his JJ when getting approx 2/1 (really shouldn't call with small suuited connectors unless I'm getting 3/1 or more on the call and it was irrelevant having lots of chips as it was basically a VERY poor equity play).

I also got lucky and lucky but then that's poker and of course I did win my fair share of toss ups despite losing a critical couple at the end.

Hasta La Vista everyone but I need slepp badly as I only managed 2 hrs last night.

Mr. Moncada got all-in vs Mr. Pescatori with JQ vs his AJ. The A was no good once the JQ made a straight, however, and Max Pescatori has to settle for 10th place and 7,500. He didn't look terribly happy, but shook his opponent's hand and thus cued the escape of us updaters.

After letting you know these chip counts, of course:
Stuart Nash    24,100
Peter Roche  140,000
A. Vasiliou    46,300
S. Sundbo   241,500
David Rudling 172,200
E Moncada   179,900
Tony G       314,400
Angelo Besnanou 14,300
C Kanwar      79,900

Back at 3pm tomorrow to finish them off. Good luck to the final nine...

Sverre - well done, we enjoyed sweating you on Saturday, now enjoy your big day. We will follow you & trhe other guys all the way.

Ultrapop - no, not to my knowledge. I assume they will be recording it for showing at a later date.

Sarah0502 - we wish David Rudling Good Luck. He was a "man of mystery" yesterday, we never knew who he was. But I spoke with him after the comp finished for the day, & realised who he was - he had a mountain of chips on Day One of the WSOP. We will follow him properly today, & we aoologise for hardly mentioning him before.
