Title: Luton Xmas Cracker - Day Two & Final - LIVE UPDATE
Post by: tikay on December 11, 2005, 02:29:42 PM
Hi, afternoon all, & welcome to Luton, Virtually, for the second day of the £750 Main Event, the last major domestic Festival of 2005.

Most of  you will know, there have been big problems in Hemel Hempstead today (just 3 or 4 miles from here) & the M1 is closed, so there may be a few late arrivals. The Luton Management, on the ball as ever, have already decided that they will delay the start of Day Two if anyone is late.

Kudos to Grosvenor for a sensible decision.

Already spotted in the casino are Micky Wernick, Paul Garnham, Steve Bovis, Stephen Lennon, & Jeff Buffenburger. Stu Fox is staying local, so he'll be here.

Title: Re: Luton Xmas Cracker - Day Two & Final - LIVE UPDATE
Post by: tikay on December 11, 2005, 02:45:58 PM
Thanks Tighty.

The position with our Live Updaters today is this - and it's bad news for you guys, as the 'ol fella looks like being back in harness.

I've rung Jen - she lives in Hampstead, North London (posh, see) & told her we can cope without her (very reluctantly) as she has no chance of getting here, & I don't want her stuck on the Motorway for hours. So I think she's gonna divert to Mel Lofthouse's new CardRoom & do a report on the place for blonde.

snoops left home (Solihull - not so posh, see) about 1pm, & I'm really not sure if he wil get here or not. But even if he does, we will be restricted to one Laptop today, as snoops uses mine, & Jen uses her own.

But there are only 15 runners, so I think I'll get by OK, even if snoops does not show, but I fancy he will.

Maureen - sorry, I'd love to do Notts tonight, but duty calls, & all that.......

The Poker 425 Crew are due shortly, so we are all set.

Tracey,

Bernard has been in touch with the Cardroom, & is going to ring again with a progress report shortly.

They are prepared to delay the start I believe, certainly by 15 or 20 minutes if need be, maybe more. That's a good decision, in my opinion.

Paul King? Nope, he's OUT.

Am I playing tonight's Luton comp? No, not now.

Enough of the "Anthony" please At-It!

And no, Poker 425 do not expect me to make Day Two - who does? But Rhowena does the Venue "exit interviews" these days, so I just point them in the direction of potentially interesting interview subjects.

By way of keeping you amused while we await the start, I'll post a pic or two.

Here's a right bunch of reprobates, pictured before the comp began yesterday.

Back row, left to right, Colchester Kev, Tighty, Red-Dog (very smart eh?), Boodereham - first time I recall meeting him., LOVELY bloke, really - & Sheriff - the clue is on his hat. In front are Malc M & snoops.

We are about to begin, everyone is here, & the players are unbagging their chips. I'm as jealous as a jealous thing, I'd love to have made Day Two, but a tinsy winsy misunderstanding arose when we were down to about 22 runners, so that was that.

And it's.......SHUFFLE UP & DEAL!

Tikay's eyes are reminiscent of a rather portly siamese cat who has seen a very large vat of cream, and is waddling over to jump into it.

Snoops here.

Minor news.

Foxy's preflop raise of 5.5k is reraised by Mateyboy who sticks in another 10k. Foxy folds showing Ac.

Meanwhile, on the other table, A. Adda's preflop raise with A-J is reraised by Irish Denis's pocket queens. Adda mucks.

Title: Re: Luton Xmas Cracker - Day Two & Final - LIVE UPDATE
Post by: snoopy1239 on December 11, 2005, 03:32:33 PM
M. Arnott is OUT.

M. Arnott raised under the gun, Adda reraised, Pascal Perrault moved all-in, and so did M. Arnott.

M. Arnott had slightly less chips than Pascal.

Adda dwells before mucking.

Pascal turns over 9d 9s. Arnott shows Ac Ad.

Board = 9c 8c Qc 9h Ks

Pascal punches the air as soon as the 4th 9 arrives.

Pascal now has around 150k.

Bad news I'm afraid, Charmaine.

Paul 'M3boy' Garnham is OUT.

He started the day with 15k but struggled to find a hand to move in with.

Everyone folded round to the Foxy in the small blind, who put in the extra 1k. Paul checked with 8.5k in front of him

Flop came 2h 9h Ts

Foxy checked. Paul pushed all-in, but was swiftly called by Mr Fox.

Foxy turns over Tc 6c. (Dirty trapper!)

Paul shows Ah 2c for bottom pair.

Turn = Qh, River = 9s.

No improvement, and Paul's gone.

Tough luck m8.

Down to 12 now.

Steve Bovis is OUT.

He moved all-in from the cut-off for 22k with Ad Jc.

Stephen Lennon called on the button with Ah Qd.

Board came Tc 9c Kh Jd 4d, giving Bovis a pair, but Lennon the straight.

They're dropping like flies here.

Hello all by the way. Everyone well? I'm Jenless today.  :(

snoops here.

We're not on the final just yet.

We've still got 10 players left and we're wating for one to drop before we move onto the final table.

It's hand for hand at the moment, and so, predictably, the state of play is at snail's pace.

Everyone's playing very cagey poker with no one making any big moves. Obviously all are pretty keen to make that final.

A. Adda is lowest chips and most likely to hit that dreaded bubble spot.

Overheard THIS conversation a few minutes ago, it's Steve Meehan, aka Wormster, the Poker 425 Producer, to Rhowena.

"How do you spell "biggest"? - is it one g or two?"

"Dunno".

WHAT? That's TRUE.

I guess it is quite a long word.

Simon Zach had a real horror beat to exit yesterday.

Him & Mr Adda indulged in some pre-flop action, Zach with  As Kh & Adda with  Ac Qc (I forget the suits).& the flop came like this......

 Ah 5d 3d

Zach, first to speak, moves his entire 35k+ in the middle. Mr Adda never hesitates for a nana-second, & beats  Zach into the pot.

On their backs, Adda is in deep poo, he's dominated, with 2 cards to come. Naturally, he hit his Q, but his face never showed a flicker of emotion. Remarkable, quite remarkable play.

snoops here.

Micky has been seriosuly dented and is now down to the felt.

Adda raised in early position with Ad Qd.

Wernick makes a deep reach and reraises Adda all-in.

Adda dwells momentarily before making a brave call for the rest of his chips.

The bubble looms...

Fortunately for Adda, Wernick flips over As Jc.

Board comes 6h 8h Kd 5d Td

and Adda doubles up.

Looks as though Micky is in danger of bubbling for the second main event in a row.

David Robinson is OUT and hits the bubble

After preflop action, Robinson and Pascal Perrault see a flop of 8c 2c Ks.

Pascal bets, Robinson moves all-in, Pascal calls.

Pascal shows Kh Qh

Robinson holds Ac Qc

Robinson misses his flush draw and Pascal rakes the pot to take us into the last nine.

hi Tighty here. Well bubble action lasted 90 minutes before the wait for two big hands to collide ended

According to Mr Perrault, who it looks like is now clear chip leader, just reaching the final guarantees the genial frenchman second in the European rankings at this point. With Mickey short-ish stacked, he has his eyes on top spot at the end of this tournament with only Helsinki and Brighton to go before conclusion of the leaderboard next weekend.

They're preparing for the final table.

Tables being moved around, camera put in place, trophy, jackets, and so on.

Micky Wernick has just completed an interview with Rhowena. He's becoming quite the celebrity these days.

'The Worm' seems relieved to have avoided the bubble after his unfortunate 10th placing at the Midland Masters.

Micky told Rhowena that he was more nervous about the ranking points than the 27k on offer.

First several hands saw no action.

Then Wernick and Fox cross swords.

Fox raises preflop, Wernick smooth calls from the big blind.

Flop = Kh 8s Qs

Fox bets 5k, Wernick flat calls.

Turn = Jd

Both check.

River = 2s

Wernick bets 11k, Fox folds.

Wernick shows As Js.

More Pre-Commencement action. Or non-action. One of the nicer pics of blondeite Denis O'Mahoney. There are 3 or 4 blondeites in the Final.

Turn = 5h

Butler bets 12k. Denis Folds.

Butler shows 6c 8d

Finally, some big big action to report.

Stuart Fox raises to 7k preflop.

Irish Denis reraises another 25k.

A Adda moves all-in.

Forgetting that Fox was still involved, Irish Denis quickly announces 'call'.

The call stands and Fox is allowed to consider his options.

After a long dwell, he passes showing Qs Qc.

Denis turns over Ad Ks

A Adda flips Kd Kh

Flop = 3c Qh 9s

Fox groans.

Turn = 9h

River = Qd

The whole crowd groans.

Stuart Fox would have hit quads and knocked out both oponents. as it stands, Adda more than doubles up, Irish Denis is down to the felt, and we still have 9 players remaining.

Some hot three way action now.

Board = Qh 5h 4s Ts 9c

Litman had bet 3k on both flop and turn receiving calls from Adda and Perrault.

All three players checked the river.

Litman = 9h 8h
Perrault = As 2d
Adda = 7h Th

Adda adds a few more to his stack.

tikay again.

How about THIS for a gentlemanly act by Denis O'Mahoney.

At the last 2 Luton Fessies, he & I have swapped 10%. On the last occasion, I gave him £50, he gave me £1,000.

I picked up £3,800 on Monday, but Denis & I had not discussed any %'s for this week, so I thought no more about it, despite the fact he sent me a "thank you for the % text",which I assumed was tougue-in-cheek.

He's just  - 5 mins ago - told me our deal for swapping 10% this week IS still on. Whether or not he gets more than £3,800 (& will thus owe me) is irrelative. That's a true Gent, a genuine Top Bloke. I hope, for lots of reasons..... he gets a big payday.

For all the low-lifes in Poker, there are plenty of great guys too, & I've been lucky to befriend so many of them. Even the high-flying Thewy, a World-Ranking player these days in my opinion, still insists that he & I have a saver. Poker Peeps ain't as bad as they are sometimes made out to be.

Charmaine - that's WONDERFUL news! A friend of mine's young lad was a month or two "late" in walking, & whilst he pretended not to be concerned, he was. But then the Lad was walking, & then running all over the place. Happy Days, as Paul Parker would say.

This - I think - is G Butler. I sat with him for most of the comp. Does not say a lot, but pleasant demeanour, very studied, always ready to smile, & clearly thoroughly enjoying himself. I love to see guys like this make big Finals.

Glad to see that Pascal is looking after those chips that were nearly mine. Good luck to him I say - he's a decent fella (even said so on my blog which was soon after elimination).

tikay here. Sorry I keep mentioning that, but we only have one Lappie today, & we cannot open the Forum in two different "log-in" names simultaneously.

No, I don't believe even for a second there was any mal-intent behind Denis inadvetently acting out of turn. Anyone who knows Denis would know that, & by a bizarre coincidence, I just posted a typical "Gentleman Denis" story. There's many that would, but Denis is not one of them. I watched the hand "live", & I'm 100% certain it was a genuine mistake.

B Litman is the 7th place finisher winning £2,400

He won't like me reporting this one. I think he must have been possessed by tikay and his wonderful misreads.

Anyway, Litman moves all-in from the button.

Wernick calls from the big blind and confidently flips over Qh Qs.

Litman, rather less confidently, turns over Qd 2d.

eeeeeeeeeeeeeek

Slight spot of bother.

Board isn't any help - Jh 7h 4c 7d 9c

... and Litman is off for his dreaded interview with Rhow. Don't think he has a bad beat story to tell tho.

I can't wait to hear him explain that one!!!! Whhoohooo!! LOL. I wait by the phone with bated breath...he heheheheh

Forgetting that Fox was still involved, Irish Dennis quickly announces call.

Anyone else think this was really bad?

Foxy must be pissed about him doing this, it must have be a huge part in laying down the QQ, and i'm sure this was the intent behind it.....

Surely thes would have been an advantage for foxy, more in the pot and Denis can make no further action

Or am I wrong (again)

Ps, make room for me on the "Denis is a nice guy" bandwaggon

Pps It's Denis with one n isn't it?

Correct Red. And yes, it's Denis, not Dennis.

Just got the call from Bernard - I have to admit I was still laughing when i picked up the phone..!

His version of events was he was short stacked - about 45k and decided to make a move - unfortunately against the wrong hand!

Oh well! Bloody funny and I will ensure that all his poker buddies in Southend get to hear the full story and make sure he doen't turn it into one of Tikays infamous misread stories  ;scarymoment;

Minor action.

Wernick bets 5k into a flop of Jc 9h 9d.

Pascal flatcalls.

When the turn comes 4h, Wernick checks into Pascal who shoves in 8k.

Wernick mucks.

Two Queens? No, Queen-Two, Bernard! Would not be so bad if his oppo did not have QQ! Micky Wernick, by the way, is up to best part of 100k now. What a fighter that man is!

Just caught the end of a major major hand.

60k in the pot already.

Stuart Fox and Pascal Perrault are looking at a flop of 4s 6h 7c.

Stuart checks, Pascal bets 35k.

Stuart smooth calls.

Turn = Td

Stuart checks, Pascal sticks in a chunky bet.

Stuart does some 1st class acting before reraising all-in. Pascal calls in a flash.

Pascal = As Ad
Stuart = 8s 9s (straight)

Pascal is drawing dead so the 2c on the river is meaningless.

Stuart Fox doubles through and has now overtaken Pascal Perrault as chip leader.

Nice one Stu!!!

Although, I'm not biased. Well maybe a little... sort of.  ::) ::) ::)

Hope he remembers that 50% cut we had. The people I go in with always seem to forget...

Here's Stu Fox's replenished stack, though Stu is doing his Invisible Man thing.

Stuart has a tendency to play Finals very fast, but today he's been ultra patient. I really don't mind who wins today, but Stu is overdue a Major Festival Win, he's been so close so many times, & I'd not be at all sad if he won this one. He deserves it. Top player, top bloke.

This time however he wins with them.

Lennon mucked after a lengthy dwell.

There's a bit of a kafuffle going on at the moment.

There's a xmas party going on in the restaurant and they're making a bit of noise.

The final table is right behind the restaurant and some of the players are finding it difficult to focus.

At one point, a baloon fizzed over the barrier and into the face of Pascal Perrault. He wasn't involved in a hand so his poker face is untarnished.

Irish Denis isn't happy either.

He's just doubled up S Lennon with Kh Qd v Qh Ac on a board of 7s 3c 8c 3s 9h.

Denis said that he'd raised in anger just before he called the all-in from Lennon.

Denis is now refusing to move from the table as he asked for the final to be moved down to the other end of the cardroom just before he lost that hand.

Denis is now low on chips but still hanging in.

Denis O'Mahoney is the 6th place finisher winning £2,700

Denis moved in with pockets nines but found himself in a race against Pascal who held A-K.

Now this may very well be a first in Blonde history. Below is the hand that took Denis out.

Denis asked to move to another table because of all the noise from the restaurant.

Micky said he didn't want to move.

Then a baloon hit Pascal in the face and suddenly Micky wanted to move.

Denis wasn't too chuffed about this, especially considering that he'd just lost his focus in a hand, perhaps due to the disturbance from the restaurant.

And more from the 'ol Fella.

This structure is really superb. The Final continues, & they STILL have plenty of play left, with the average stack nearly 200,000, & blinds 3k-6k - thats about 30 BB's. Remarkable. And maybe explains why the wily old Wernick is still in there, battling away, after being down to the felt with 10 players left.

All the chips go in on a board of Ad 4s 3d.

Lennon = Qd 8d

Turn = 9h

River = Td

I don't think there were too many people hoping that flush would come.

Jeff, tikay here - yes, I thought I was heading for another Final, I'd dodged the bulets all night, survived a crisis or two, but two hands did me in, the first I maybe played badly, and the second I just got oitdrawn, my 6-7 getting sucked out by KK. Them's the breaks.

It's quite extraordinary how Micky Wernick is able to pass hands - big hands sometimes - when other folks would feel they were pot-committed.

Time & time again, he lays down hands after getting re-popped, but somehow he clings in. He must be just about THE greatest short-stack player around today.

Pascal raises from the button. Stuart Fox moves over the top. Pascal calls all-in.

Pascal turns over Ts Tc

Stuart shows Ad Jc

Board = 9c Qc As Qs 5c

Micky is delighted to have finished further in the comp than Pascal. His postition at the top of the rankings looks to be safe for the time being.

At one point, I recall Micky saying, and I quote, 'If Pascal goes out before me, I'll run round the casino naked.'

Micky's tenacity to hang in there really is diferent gravy. I commented earlier on that pass he made, to leave himself 33k, & his short stack skills, & once again, he's been proven correct in his judgement. Fair play to him, he looks in good shape now to win the Rankings. Dave Colclough called this morning from Belfast to wish Good Luck to Mickey & Pascal, yet another example that our game really does have plenny of nice guys in it.

So, 4 left here. Been SOME Final, this one!

I hear what you say I Know It, but tonight is about Points, not Pounds, & Micky is playing for Points & Points alone. The Rankings means more to him that the £10k that goes with it, the Sponsorship Fairy is lurking. I honestly think that Micky is NOT bothered about the Prize Money tonight - just the points. On that basis, it makes his Pass correct. as it turns out.

I believe Fox raised, Lennon reraised, Fox moves all-in.

Stephen Lennon 100k. Never had chips, but never been in danger.

Gilbert Butler 370k. Terrific performance against vastly more experienced players.

Stephen Lennon is the 4th Place finisher winning £5,700k

It was a batlle of the shorties in the end. (stack size not physical height)

Lennon's raise from the small blind was reraised all-in by Micky Wernick who was putting Lennon to a decision for all his chips. Both had about the same, but Micky just pipped him on the chip count.

After a lot of umming and arring, Lennon opted to gamble with his Kh 8h.

He must have been delighted to see Micky turn over 2c 2h and relieved to be involved in a coin flip.

Board came 3c 5h 4d 9c Ac

Micky makes a straight and virtually doubles up.

3 left...

Snoop, I've just had a word with my daughter re your application (showed her your pic) She asked what you do, I told her you play poker she said " When he wins the world series, tell him to give me a ring"

Mrs Red says "I'll have him"

Do you have any other good looking relatives? cousins, nieces, etc.

I'm not fussy.

Well theres my uncle Billy, He's not picky

thanks red........just spilt my coffee  !!!!!

Pretty cagey stuff at the moment.

The possibility of a deal was mentioned when they returned from the break, but, for the time being, they've decided to continue playing.

From what I understand, £1200 was taken off the top to give 10th-15th a saver. Will need to confirm that though.

Is there any chance that Uncle Billy is a busty blonde female, or is that wishful thinking?

A meaty hand was unfolding as I posted my last message.

Board = 3d 7d 5d 4h 4d

Pot is already quite chunky.

Stuart Fox bets 70k on the river.

Micky Wernick calls.

Fox = As 8d

Wernick = Ad 6s

Wernick adds a nice amount to his stack and must be challenging chip leader Gerry Butler.

Stuart Fox = 85k

More talk of a deal.

Micky makes a suggestion which is declined by chip leader Glen Butler.

Butler was offered 17.8k, but opts to play on.

Even though Stuart only has around 80k remaining, Micky was trying to orchestrate a deal in which he and Stuart took the same amount.

When Gerry Butler wonders why Micky is being so generous to Stuart, Micky's reply is that Stu knocked Pascal out of the comp and he feels happy giving him a more favourable deal.

Bizarre stuff here at Luton.

Right.

I understand that a deal has been struck and they're now playing for the title and honour of being announced the winner.

Looks like Foxy and Micky are to take 15k each, with Gerogie Butler scooping 18.5k.

I believe a few hundred will be paid to dealers, valets, etc, and there was £1200 taken off the top as savers.

Just after they agreed on the deal, Foxy doubled up with Qs Qd v Ac Ts on a 6d 8h 3d Td 3h board against Butler.

Rhowena seems rather elated that a deal has been made.

Although the money side of the comp is done and dusted, the players are still playing on a giving the game repsect.

No micky mouse or lottery play yet.

At a quick glance, the chip counts are around:

Micky - 350k
Butler - 350k
Foxy - 200k

It was a very generous offer by Micky to take the same as Foxy. Foxy was on less than a 100k at the time, but ended up with an awesome deal.

The official (non-deal) result will go down as:

Stuart Fox is the 3rd place finisher winning £8,400k

G Butler is the 2nd place finisher winning £13,500k

Micky Wernick is the 1st place finisher and Luton Christmas Cracker Champion winning £27,100

Just to confirm; this is the official result only. A deal was done and then after a short session of playing seriously, they all decided to move-in and finish for the night.

Micky's pocket sevens stood up against two Q-9 holdings.

Hi All,

Many thanks for all your support during the final. If I could I would like to clear up a couple of things. I never intended to act out of turn with Stuart. My intention was to plat the other player heads up. When he reraised all in I just called as it was only another 7500. Stuart then asked me to back up. He wanted to know the rule and I said I would go with whatever he wanted regardless of what the house rule was. In my opinion Stuart then made the right decision and passed. He was behind to the Kings and I had the ace. Had he reraised or called he would have won the hand but I would have lost no more chips as I hit nothing.

As for the problems with the restaurant let me just say that the poker room staff did everything possible to help. I made a move with QK and got reraised. I was getting good pot odds and called to find him with AQ. I lost .....what can I say. It was my fault.

Finally for my tip of the week. After two days play and a few lucky and unlucky breaks I feel my tournament was decided by a lapse in concentration. It had nothing to do with the cards. I lost my focus for one hand and it was the end for me. On every other occasion when I lost a pot I could gather myself and refocus....The lesson being "focus and concentrate all the time" and their ends the gospel according to St Denis..Thanks again to all for your help and well done Blonde on a the coverage. I am proud to be part of the team.

Denis

Tikay can you pass on my Congratulations. Tell him that Matt Arnott says "Well played Mickey". A worthy winner and a worthy European Rankings winner - I hope no offence is taken by Dave C or Pascal who are both terrific chaps worthy of their successes too.

Very good of Denis to come on here and clarify the honest mistake that occurred earlier on - In addition I thought he was playing better than I have seen him play for ages too. Good on him.

Well, WHAT a night!

Firstly, thanks to everyone at Grosvenor & Rank for their hospitality, which throughout 2005 has been wonderful at all their Venues.

To the Staff & Mannagement at Luton, wow, how well did THEY look after us? Carmel - who hosted dinner for blonde & 425 this evening, Helen, Simon, Dina, & all the dealers & valets, & not forgetting the bright & cheery Receptionists, & Big Tony, who walks Jen & snoops to their cars down "muggers alley" every night.

To Jen & snoops - how lucky are blonde to have them?

But the abiding memory of today, which I will never forget, was THE most extraordinary performance by Micky Wernick. Much Respect, Mr W.

I'm M1 bound, heading home, nearly the end of a long & tiring Updating year - just Helsinki left in 2005  - but great, great fun, which would not have been possible without blondepoker & the blondeites.

It's been emotional. ;)
