Was invited to Castle Coombe this last Saturday to take some photos for their Autumn Classic. Unfortunatley it threw it down most of the day and I didn't get much but thought I'd post a couple of my favourite cars from the day.
Firstly, this Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing was sat by itself looking gorgeous. From the poking around I've done on the net it's from 1957 but how accurate that is I'm not sure

Secondly, this Ferrari 250 GTO is owned by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd fame. The 250 GTO was made between 1962 and 1964 and Ferrari only made 39 of them, probably making it one of the rarest cars in the world. The last known sale of one was in 2013 and it sold for a cool $38 million. Bit disappointed I couldn't get a decent photo of it but then you don't really ask for a car like this to be shifted over so I can snap it!

Saw a very friendly robin on the way to work on Friday

Just wondered if anyone knew if robins were 'normally' as tame as pigeons or whether this was unusual?

Most robins are fairly tolerant of humans, especially familiar ones getting within 20 feet or so. Any that allow you closer than that have probably had some positive re-enforcement.
Nice shot BTW. More details?

Not very interesting details (I think). Just took it with my phone on the way to work.
I took this photo first - without zoom and not cropped, so gives an idea of distance
When I got closer it started hopping across the pavement - what surprised me (and hence the question about 'tameness') is that it hopped across but going towards me rather than away. The closer photo is cropped but was just from kneeling down, with a little bit of zoom and framing the shot as it had a little pause in it's crossing.

Could anyone suggest a good macro lens please.
I'd like to be able to take some really close up highly magnified photos.
Thank you.

They start at about £280ish and go upwards. It depends on what you want to shoot. Might be worth checking out eBay for a second hand version if you didn't want to spend that much.
If you want bugs, spiders, insects etc, then something between a 60mm and 150mm lens will do the job. The longer the focal length the further away you can shoot your subject (shooting a butterfly - a 60mm lens may scare it off but with a 100mm you can be further away) The Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro (£380ish) is supposed to be one of the best. You can get an L version with IS for an extra £300. Sigma do some good lenses too, I have the 150mm f2.8. The 100mm is supposed to be good too. Just make sure it shoots at 1:1 which is lifesize on the sensor.
If you want ultra close ups, the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5X is what you are after - shoots at up to 5 x lifesize. There's a bit of technique needed with this lens, you probably won't just pop it on and get a great shot but the results can be staggering. It will set you back about £800-£900. Here's an ant head taken with it, just randomly from Google. According to the blurb it's a stacked shot of 71 images

Thank you Graham. That 5x magnifier one looks fabulous. I'll try to find a second hand one on ebay.
Thanks again.

This looks like a good offer on ebay. I can try it for 60 days and then return it for a full refund if I don't want to keep it.
I'm thinking I won't know what I actually need until I use one.
