Title: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: TightEnd on May 16, 2006, 04:05:05 PM They are talking to someone to replace Alan Curbishley
He ruined my club (to be fair anyone following O'Neill would have struggled)...£5.5m for Akinbiyi for one and tactical naivete galore He has done nothing at Hull in the Championship despire £ backing which gave him players good enough to easily gain promotion out of the lesser leagues His reputation is based off England U21s when he had a superb group of players. His name....Peter Taylor Get on Charlton to be relegated pronto!!! Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Acidmouse on May 16, 2006, 04:34:47 PM Yeah it does seem strange I would personally be against him joining Charlton. Don't think he offers anything up for the club to progress forward.
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Nem on May 16, 2006, 06:03:28 PM A great day for poor managers.
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Rooky9 on May 16, 2006, 06:11:02 PM He has got two promotions in three (4?) years with Hull... keeping them in that division this year was success for the club - Sustainable growth.
He has done a great job with Hull... I hope he doesnt go to Charlton, leaving Hull with every chance of making the play offs in the next couple of years. Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... He has done a great job with Hull... I hope he doesnt go to Charlton, leaving Hull with every chance of making the play offs in the next couple of years. with the financial backing he was given by Hull's new owners he should have been expected to get them to the Championship They have absolutely no chance of progressing any further. Saw them this year, one of the worst teams I saw. Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Rooky9 on May 16, 2006, 06:40:29 PM Hull aren't exactly a Chelsea...
He has acheived what was expected then?! He certainly hasnt spent enough to be in the PL. There are only ever four or five clubs in that division who are capable of progressing (usually only short term)... look how many years Sheff United have been on the boarder and Wolves for another.... Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: ifm on May 16, 2006, 06:42:20 PM Agreed, Taylor is a good manager.

Post by: Rooky9 on May 16, 2006, 06:50:31 PM TBH he suprised me being linked with that job... i think he has his level now and if he ever did get them up then he would deserve a shot at the PL.
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: henrik777 on May 16, 2006, 10:00:00 PM Whoever goes in is on a hiding to nothing.
Can they improve ? Doubtful whoever is in charge. Sandy Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: The Baron on May 16, 2006, 11:46:15 PM Again good young British managers are overlooked for those with friends on boards....
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Jim-D on May 16, 2006, 11:54:01 PM I say fair play to Charlton for not going for an expensive over rated foriegner like alot of clubs of their size have done in the past.
Another british premiership manager can only be a good thing. Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... I'n my mind, without doubt, Taylor will fail, cos he doesn't have what it takes at the highest level. Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Acidmouse on May 17, 2006, 09:01:50 AM I wish I could say more but after a conversation with my uncle who works for Charlton i am expecting bad news soon :(
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: matt674 on May 17, 2006, 09:49:04 AM As a virtual life long charlton fan i will reserve any judgement about which manager eventually fills the "hotseat" until at least another 12 months time.
How many eyebrows were raised amongst Charlton fans when it was announced all those years ago that the board had appointed two joint managers neither of whom had any experience of club management. Look at where we were 15 years ago and look at where we are now, personally i applaud everything the Charlton board has done in the past to get the club into its current position ;applause; ;applause; Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Pokerron on May 17, 2006, 10:01:53 AM Anyone who pays £5m for Akinbiyi is ok in my book. They wont go down next season, Darren Bent and the dross coming up from the CCC will ensure this.
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Junior Senior on May 17, 2006, 12:58:00 PM got to give any manager a chance (unless you get carlton palmer like we did :-)). - lets see what the verdict is after 2 seasons - i think taylor may well do a good job with Charlton

On bbc website. Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Indestructable on May 18, 2006, 08:39:12 PM Can you imagine being a Charlton fan and knowing that someone would rather stay at Hull than manage Charlton. :D
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: matt674 on May 30, 2006, 01:21:53 PM So how many people had their money on Iain Dowie when this thread started? :D
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Acidmouse on May 30, 2006, 02:00:19 PM Made a few quid backed him just after he resigned last week, nowt much though.
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: matt674 on May 30, 2006, 02:09:59 PM Made a few quid backed him just after he resigned last week, nowt much though. aye, i know a few people who backed him AFTER he resigned (I dont believe Simon Jordan to be one of them however) but i just wondered if anyone had backed him before he resigned - wonder what price you could have got...... Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: dalzini on May 30, 2006, 02:54:25 PM I know there was at least 25/1 available before he resigned, when Taylor was odds on.
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: gatso on May 30, 2006, 09:00:29 PM I'm delighted with the appointment of Dowie.
I may be proved wrong but I think he'll get the best out of the current squad. But the most important thing is how much it's upset simon jordan. etcyt jordan, etcyt as we say in SE7 Title: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Indestructable on May 30, 2006, 09:51:29 PM Dowie has come out of this in a bad light and if Jordan is telling the truth Dowie is going to end up paying through the nose for the contract clause for £1million plus risk of legal fees. i can only guess he was poorly advised, but sound like he was advised by a bloke down the pub to use the moving up north story. :D
Does seem like an odd choice though. Ian Dowies record over last 2 years is to take Palace down and then to keep them down. Don't understand why this makes him the best choice for Charlton. What are the odds on them going down? Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: matt674 on May 30, 2006, 10:00:34 PM like i said earlier i'm reserving judgement til he's had a full season in charge, brought it who he wants within the budget and released who isnt needed, i believe Bartlett, Johansson and Jeffers have not had their contracts renewed already. Hopefully we've still got a core of players good enough to keep us in the premiership (though a few attacking playmaking midfielders would be nice) and we can go from there.
Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: Karabiner on May 30, 2006, 10:09:03 PM Personally I feel that Charlton fans should be happy, Dowie is extremely upbeat and positive.
I think he'll do well for you and hope that he does. Title: Re: Charlton board loses the plot.... Post by: gatso on May 30, 2006, 10:09:57 PM firstly the valley is north of selhurst park. ok, it's by less than 3 miles but north is north.
secondly he was not under contract. Charlton conducted the interviews and drew up a shortlist. Dowie then quit and was approached by the club after being released from his previous contract thirdly, the only witness to the conversation jordan is basing his writ on was dowie's brother. good luck with that one jordan. as for his record, he took over a club in major crisis and worked miracles in his first season. he then had a club who were completely out of their depth in the premiership and was so colse to keeping them up. If they'd just kept out that oh so sweet goal from jon fortune on the last day of the season they'd have stayed up. |
