Title: Grosvenor Southampton £1000 LIVE UPDATE
Post by: Djinn on May 28, 2006, 04:25:12 PM
The £1,000 No Limit hold'em freezeout is seconds from commencing here in Southampton - the field is small, but hopefully action-generating and in all other ways entertaining...

A couple of words about this update first:

Snoops and I are having to share the one Vodafone card and a connection which is comparable to talking via cups on a bit of string.  This means that we won't be updating as frequently, but hopefully there'll be loads of juicy information in every fun-packed post.  Well, that's the idea.  And unfortunately, there would be a lag of about, oh, a decade if we were to try any photos - so we'll get them on in one go later on today or tomorrow (no worries about our photographic slacking!)

And there appear to be just five tables starting off on this comp - full player list in the next post.  But I think I should mention Flushy and NoFlopsHomer whom we have already run into during the mad dash through the bar...

Hi jen, sloppy.

I should add that's it's my fault there is only 1 lappie down there. I was supposed to be there, & give sloppy my lappie, but I was wrecked, after 4 days non-stop hithering & thithering, & did not get up in time. I'm sorry.

Well, there are two lappies now, but one if them is mine.  I'm sure slopony will get his paws on it at some point when I'm otherwise occupied (ie at the bar).

Hi folks, Mr Beagle here..

The big news here is that the usually blue Grosvenor sign on the front of the building is actually red here!!

Oh yeah, and there's also a tournament on...

Speaking of which, although there is only a rather lack-lustre 37 crowd, we are graced by the presence of a few blondeites. Doc12345 (Luke Smith), Jim Reid, Keith Hawkins (The Camel), Irish Denis, and Noflopshomer They're not much, but they're all ours. Anyhow, it's quality, not quantity... well, that's what my past lady friends kept telling me anyhow. Grr!

Actually, the latter of them blondeites, Chris Hall, encountered some early action...

Camel called, Mark Lawrence (nowt to do with football) also called, noflops raised to 250.

Both opponents called.

Flop = 7d 6c 8d

Camel checks, Lawrence bets 200, noflops makes it 800, Camel folds, Lawrence calls.

Both check it dow to the river. Turn = Jh, River = Ad

Noflops = Td Ts

Lawrence = 8h 9h

A close one, but Chris is a nosehair in front and scoops the pot.

Snoops again. More news for you. Apologies for it bing clunked together, but the mobile card is in full tortoise mode.

Mark Lawrence is down to 900 after running his Q-Q into Antony (should that be Anthony or is the player list spot on?) Hughes's pocket rockets.

How about this for a board though?... Q on the flop, Ace on the turn. Ouch. Plenty of oooohs and aaaahs on that hand.

Other news is that whilst Greg Winters (axeman) has seemingly withdrawn from the comp, Barry Hearn, who is listed as playing this comp, is nowhere to be seen.

The worst news of all, however, is that Flushy just lost a 7k pot. On a flop of Q-T-5, Flushy bet out his top two pair and found one caller Mateyboy then check called 1.5k on the jack turn, and did the exact same on the 3 river. His hand? Q-J. Ouch, but I suppose Flushy could easily have found himself sitting on the rail.

Finally, a short hand from table 1...

Walid Khalil bets 500 into a 6s 4s Ad flop. Mateyboy calls. Khaili bets the 3d turn, Mateyboy folds.

Blinds just about to go up by the way.

Well, on Level Two and a couple of seats have been vacated already... Snoopy resisted his roast beef for long enough to bring you a few key moments, so here's one to tide you over until that thrilling count of chips which will take place in the break (half an hour).  Or until something equally exciting occurs...

Stuart Nash gets a very early double up with Kc Jc against Michael Mole on a Kh Ks 7s board.  Unfortunately for Stuart (at least until the river) his opponent held Ac Kd!
But the Jack fell and Stuart gets to start his tournament with 20,000 instead of 10k...

Howdy ho peeps, snoppety snop snop here.

Latest news:

-- We're down to 4 tables
-- Jim Reid lost a small pot with A-9 to Lyle Metcalfe's A-K on an ace high board. The third diamond on the turn slowing both players down.
-- They've changed the clock from the advertised 1 hour, to just 45 minutes.
-- James Dempsey is out after seeing his set of fives outdrawn by a king queen flush draw on 5-7-A flop. Not sure how Tony Adderly got all his chips in with a king high, but he did... who am I to critisise though.
-- Flushy was on Table 4, seat 7. 4-7, eek! An oman? Let him down today though. mmm, the power of 4-7.

What time does play start on Day Two - I need to let the 425 peeps know?

Any idea why has the clock been changed, mid-comp?

2:30 pm start tomorrow - as far as I know at the moment - that's what it says...but Mike says 3pm.  I'd show up at 2:30 just to be on the safe side.

The clock was 45 min right from the start today - sorry if the lag meant it looked like an "all-change" sort of scenario.

****************************Break************************

Martin Green loses a 3k or so pot with Qc Qd after they got past the 2 3 2 9 turn and the Aspades fell on the river - giving Nick Jenkins the eventual winner with his Ac Ts

There's a limpathon on Mike Magee's table (6 players) and then a lot of checking until the middle held Jc Aspades Qc Ks Tc.  It checked to Mike who bet 1,000.  Only one caller brave enough to match the bet, and gets told "I'm playing the board."  So was he; they split the others' money after that scariest of collections of cards had lost the timid...

The Camel wins a nice pot in a battle of the blinds with R. Backstrom:
Flop:  Qs 6s 3d  Backstrom bet out 700.  Call.
Turn:  4h  Backstrom bet 1,400.  Camel calls again.
River:  7d  This time Backstrom gives up, showing 9h 9d, while Camel's Qc Tc takes the pot.

Whislt they're on the 10 minute break and releasing some bodily fluids, here's some more pre-break news for you.

-- Flushy took a piccy of me with the trophy, which unfortunately you'll have to wait to see. But believe you me, it's a real gem, and it's gonna make the ladies goes go wild!!! Form an orderly queue please.
-- noflops has been dealt Aces, Kings, Queens, and Tens. In his own words, 'I've had some big hands, but not made too much with them, so I wouldn't say I'd been hit in the face with the deck.' A gentle tickle then?
-- noflops made a few bucks on the following hand. His preflop raise with pocket fives found one caller. flopsy bet the A-K-T flop, Mateyboy called. Both checked the Jack turn, which also brought 3 clubs. Mateyboy then decided to value bet 500 (into a 750 pot) with A-J and a 5 river. Fopolsy called with his set, but was that too big a river bet? Should he have just checked?
-- the clock moves up to 60 mins at the 200/400 level.
-- Flushy is tempted to hit the rendez-vous in Brighton after his early exit, although he is considering telling every1 that he withdrew his entry and took the money instead. hmm

There really isn't a lot of action at the moment. All very slow paced. Unfortunately, the most exciting part of today's comp has been Flushy's untimely exit. Bah.

Anyhow, here're 3 hands in which we at least saw some chips move somewhere.

(1) Board = 7c Js Ks Qc. Adrian Royle bets 2k into a 5k pot. Rick Glading calls. River is the rather unmenacing 5d. Royle repeats his previous move by shoving in another 2k. Glading, without the dwell he gave previously, briskly calls. Both players show A-K off. Choppy chop chop.

(2) Flop = 6d 4h 7d. Martin Green checks, Mateyboy bets 200, Green calls. Turn = 2h. Exactly the same occurs. Mateyboy bets 1k on 7c river. Green folds.

(3) After some preflop action, a rather chunky pot of around several k is created. F Jahr sticks in 4k, but Antony Hughes folds.

Hopefully more, and rather more exciting, action to follow.

Oh yeah, and before I forget, noflopshomer thought the 'random in seat 1' was a Mateyboy. Er, nope, that's the one and only Keith 'The Camel' Hawkins. 'Aaaaaaaaaah, that's the Camel??' replies flopsy.

It wouldn't happen to tikay...

-- Still no big hands to report, and, with just 4 tables it's unlikely we're going to miss anything too shocking.

-- I notice that 'Noflopshomer' is logged on even though he's seated beyond me. Assuming that it's his folks keeping a keen eye on their young offspring playing in his first (I think) Main Event, I asked him if he had any messages for those two loved ones who brought him into the world, caring for his every need as grew up in this sometimes intimidating society. He said, 'No'... and quite emphatically too. Hello Mr and Mrs Hall from snoopy though. :-)

-- Blinds have just gone up to 200-400, which, according to the paper leaflet I have in front of me, means that the clock is now on 60 minutes.

-- Due to only having one lappie at hand, Jen and I are posting under the same alias. I could say it's me each time, but that could become very arduous indeed. Therefore, you're going to have to adopt some guesswork if need be. It's not too hard though, Jen's are the intelligently written posts brimming with wit and intelligence. Mine are the other ones...

Aha!  Action!  And all-ins!  And I was there!

Martin Green is OUT -

M. Morjaria raised on the button, by 1,000 (blinds are now 200/400).  The small blind passed leaving only Martin left in the big blind - he quickly re-raised another 3,000.  Morjaria was all-in in a flash, leaving Martin with a tough call.  After a long think, the re-steal probably looked possible, and Martin's Ts Td weren't too shabby, so he put his remaining 7,000 in the middle.  Unfortunately for him, Morjaria had a real hand - Qd Qh, and although a 9 and J fell on the flop, there was no more help of any sort and Mr. Green was walking out.

Elsewhere Noflops is up to 13,000 after a bet out with AK on a Q J 5 flop after he'd received one caller preflop for his 1k raise.  Little by little adds up just like lots by lots.  Did that make sense?  Who knows - but Chris looks confident.

I can't tell you how slow the mobile Internet card is down here. Well,  I can, it's not a secret or anything. In fact, I will, it's very very very slow. (stick a few more very's in there and we're still nowhere near).

I can't even send texts around here. Really weird, Southampton is a pretty well known place, but with none of my modern technology working, I feel like I'm in the middle of nowhere, which is all a bit worrying as I watched Deliverence last night. Aye carumba!

4 chippy counts for you:

Stuart Nash -- 23k
Irish Denis -- 16k
Camel -- 11k
Mike Magee -- 10k

Also, one more blondeite count. Noflopshomer has taken a small hit, and is now on 9.5k. He called a preflop raise from the big blind with K-J suited, and then bet out when he flopped the open ended straight draw. His opponent reraised, and noflops was forced to throw his draw away.

Blinds are now 200/400, 20 minutes on the clock. 30 players left with the average stack at 12k dead.

Sigh.....

I can only describe my opponets play as moronic.

He was clearly the table muppet, on what was quite a tough table. He had done fishy things like made it 600 to go on 25-50 with JJ.....

Anyhow i limped  5d 5h on the 7 handed table, a very tight player limped the button, Mike Magee completed from the SB and Mateyboy chekced in the BB.

The flop  Ad 7d 5c lovely!!

Checked to me i bet 250, button calls, mike folds, bb raises 1000!

So to me, i want to take this fools chips before he gives them to someone else so i am not risking a scared card, i re-raise 3k more, the button swiftly folds and the BB announces all in!!

Crikey! I had 3200 back after having but 4350 into this pot, i know he could have 77 but like i say he is a fool so it was an auto call. He turned over his  Kd Qd

I expected A7 not a bloody flush draw!!! Anyhow before i could laugh at his call the 9d had turned and followed by the 8c off i went!

Jim Reid has gotten quite a nice stack from somewhere in the last couple of levels - 25,000 or thereabouts- but Luke Smith just took a little pot away with a 700 bet in position on a raggy turned board...

R. Backstrom's sticky situations recur - flat calling under the gun, it looked like Ian Cox's all-in on the button for 6,500 may well have been seen, but eventually he passed leaving himself with around that number of chips.

A. Miles doubles a very short stack to a slightly less short stack with K 10 (I think) against Adrian Royle's A8 - King on the river and a little dent to Adrian's stack, but the difference between tournament life and death for Mr. Miles...

-- Sheesh. I just snapped the best piccy of Stuart Nash looking cool (??) in his new hoody. Bah! Wish I could upload it.

-- Neil Fox (Not the DJ) -- 7k
-- Rick Galding -- 9.5k
-- Mukesh Morjaria -- 32k (chip-leader)
-- Noflopshomer (Chris Hall) -- 8.7k

-- And how about this for an eye-opening hand? Stuart 'Ronny Briggs' Nash raised preflop, Jim Reid called from the button. The rag rag Ace Ace rag board was checked all the way down. What did they show? Nash = A-Q, Reid = Q-Q. It was a trappy play (exceedingly so) rather than a same village move, but definitely an interesting one.

Noflopshomer has jumped up to a rather more comforting 14.9k. Yey!

Some prelfop action with Iain Abrahams shot the pot up to around the 5k mark. Abrahams checked the 6-5-J rainbow flop, leaving flopsy to take it down with a 2.3k bet.

Denis O'Mahoney is OUT -

A pot suddenly spiralled into Big territory on an 8s Jc 7c board - Denis check-raised 6,000 on top of 2,000, leaving a small percentage of both players' stacks behind, and got a call.  He didn't like the 8c turn, and was grumbling even before he faced the all-in bet which he only just covered.  It looked like a bit of an angry call of annoyance as he saw the Ac 5c he knew was there, showing his hand: Kh Js.

"I was ahead preflop..." replied the flushed Ace, but I don't think this was any consolation to Mr. O'M...

Okay folks, hand of the day, and probably tournament, for you now.

All the chips move in on a flop of:

2c Ad Kd

Antony Hughes =  Ahrt Aspades

A Miles = 8d 8h

Iain Abrahams = Jh Jd

Miles is the shorstack, then Hughes, with Iain holding the most amount of chips.

Look set in stone with the Ace on the flop, but...

Turn = 8s

River = 8c

RIGGED!!!

It wouldn't happen online...

Soon after that Hughes made his exit with A-K v pocket fives. Five on the turn sealed the deal.

(ps. sry for the repeated posts, the card is playing tricks with my poor beagle head. grr)

Long dwell from Ian Cox.

Noflops had raised to 1.8k under the gun, Ian Cox reraised a third of his stack to make it 4k. Back round to flopsy who moved all-in for... well, lots, but he has Cox well covered.

After a lenghty mulling over, Cox folds.

Flopsy confesses (to me) that he has aces.

While I'm writing this, flopsy has some more news on his progress.

Homer writes, a guy just raised in EP and I called in the big blind with 66, flop comes KT6, I check, he bets 1200, I call, turn was a 2, I checked and he checked, river came a Jack and I made a bet for 2000. He instantly moved all-in and I really thought he had AQ, to call would've cost all my chips and I still had about 14k back so after a long dwell I folded. He showed A5.... Bugger.

A few chippy counts for you:

Ian Cox -- 7k
R Backstrom (a possible Scandieboy?) -- 7.5k
S Harris -- 9.5k
Keith Hawkins -- 26k
Stuart Nash -- 20.5k

We've just lost Tony Adderley..

If anyone spots him, please could you escort him to the front desk where his parents will pick him up again.

On a serious note, he has actually just been eliminated from the comp, in rather nasty (poker-wise) circumstances.

After some hot preflop action, he moved all-in on a 3-7-T flop.

His opponent, er... Mateyboy, called instantly and showed er... A-K off (??)

Anyhow, to cut a long story short, well a short story short I guess, an Ace hit the turn and Flushy's earlier assassin was sent packing.

I won't be publishing his exiting expletives.

Title: Re: Grosvenor Southampton £1000 LIVE UPDATE
Post by: Djinn on May 28, 2006, 09:37:11 PM
R Backstrom is OUT.

He moved his shortstack in with 8-9 off. Unfortunately he ran into A Miles's pocket queens. Ian Cox, who had raised from the button only to discard his hand after Miles reraised from the blind, held (or 'did') A-Q.

He wouldn't have outdrawn Miles though, as the 2-T-K-K-T board helped nobody, and only served to eliminate the Scandinavian (I think) and add (only slightly) to the stack of Miles.

Just saw the Camel hastening out of the cardroom - but he's not out, just on a loo spree... his chips have been up and down today, but mainly up, with his first boost coming in the form of a double up with Js Qs which got paid on a Td 8d 3c 9h board as his opponent's 8c 9c had hit just enough....

Then about five minutes later he was all-in again, but it was preflop, over the top of a mid position raiser who obligingly folded giving him a few more chips.

Mike Magee is OUT.

F. Jahr is OUT - eliminated by Iain Abrahams...

Elsewhere: S. Harris doubles up off Faud Serhan, who'd raised 2k in mid position - Harris moved in for about three times this bet from the small blind (rather rapidly, it was noticed) but he got a call from AJ, which must have delighted him, sitting there with AK off... No help for his potential eliminator on the board, and he's back in it.

Stuart Nash just raised to 2,700, but laid it down when NoflopsHomer re-raised another 6k from the small blind.  Strong commit-y type move there.

And Jim Reid is moving all in now and then, picking up pots with his fearless (but well-timed) attacks.

Blinds are up. We're now on 600/1200 antes.

Other news... Keith is demanding to know when the bar is closing, and he looked slightly distraught by the pre-dawn answer. He's decided to battle on though.

Bit of table talk between Stuart Nash and Jim Reid (all good natured of course). 'Are you going to look at your cards before you check?' asks Jim from the button. 'Talk is so cheap, isn't it?' replies Nash from the big blind. Jim bet the Q-K-7 flop, Nash called, kinda reluctantly. Both check the 8 turn, before Jim sticks in 1.3k on the Jack river. After a short dwell, Nash mucked, but I managed to quick peek at his 6-7. Don't tell a soul though!

Finally, I'd just like to show my appreciation to all the visitors we've had to day. My thanks go out to the both of you. :-)

He moved his shortstack in with the most welcome (except for 1) of starting hands, pocket cowboys (yeeeeehaaaaa)

But he wasn't doing too much yeeeeehaaaaaaing after The Camel mad the call (from the blinds, surely) with A-2, rivering a straight on an 8-K-T-J-Q board.

Boy oh boy, it's all kicked off big stylee,

2 exits for you now...

First to bite the dust is Jack Strauss lookalikey Ian Jolly. Jolly raised preflop with Ad 6d, Adrian Royce called from late position with Ahrt 8c.

Jolly moved his shortstack in on a 3c 4d 4c, but he failed to scare off Royce who made the call.

The Jd created some false hope, and the 5s river confirmed his car-park fate.

Soon after, it was the leathery jackety Mr Iain Abrahams whose Q-T was no match for Ian Cox's A-J.

It was a battle of the blinds encounter with Abrahams making it 3.6k from the small blind. Cox moved all-in and, with several k still behind him, he opted for the gamble. Alas, the 9-4-A-5-3 didn't repay what some may call his testicular fortitude. I'd call it a slight case of fruit loopiness.

Snoopy makes it sound like I'm battling through hordes of crowd and diligently following every raise and fold, but actually I have to quietly applaud him for keeping me just about energised as I am running on a pretty empty sleep tank at the moment - you know when any semblance of a daily routine has disappeared completely from your life, and you wake up and go to sleep pretty much at unpredictable times?  Well, today I woke up at 2:30am...

But enough drowsiness - here are some hands!

A. Miles is OUT -
Not one of the larger stacks about, Mr. Miles hit the Qc 3d Jh flop after calling a small raise (from Adrian Royle) in the blind.  But Royle was sitting on Ac Ad, and when he got all the chips in the middle there was no escape (well, not after the 4c and 2h followed once they were on their backs).

Faud Serhan is OUT -
Moving in with A10, he eventually found a caller in bluesquare qualifier Nick Jenkins, with AJ.  Although the pot looked like it was heading for division with the board coming A K 8 8 the Jack on the river eliminated the 11th place finisher and now we're at that special time.....

BUBBLE TIME

P.S.  Nick Jenkins wouldn't be in the position to be taking players out if he hadn't doubled through off the Camel in the following hand... he called a chunky raise from Keith and then had to ponder when on the Ahrt Th 6c flop he faced a quick all-in.  He called with an unlikely Ad 5d, which stayed good against the Camel's 5h 6h.

Stuart Nash Narrowly Avoids The Bubble News Now -

With 4,000 making its way in preflop, a short stacked Stuart moved in on the Tc 5s 4c flop, and got called by S. Harris' Aspades 5c.  This presumably wasn't what he was after, holding Jh Qh and all, but a timely Jc on the turn saved his bacon and he's now in good chip shape.

No one is desperately low yet, and this last exit might be the hardest fought over.  Well, there is no money for tenth, after all.

And it's over for the day, folks, if any of y'all are hovering...

Jim Reid is the unfortunate bubbler - in a pot which was more than his stack by the river he made a stealy move with Ts Js which bore slight relevance to the Th Qs 8h 2c Ad board.  But Adrian Royle's Ac Qd had a lot more and knocked him out in 10th.

So this must be the earliest Day One finish I have ever experienced!  But we'll be back after a nice refreshing sleep tomorrow at 3pm when the final is scheduled to start.  Hopefully someone will erect a mobile phone mast in the corner of the casino during the night, and then we can be our usual prolific selves.
