Title: Paris WPT Live Update, Day 1b
Post by: tikay on June 13, 2006, 01:47:47 PM

Welcome to Paris on another blisteringly hot day in the Capital of Cool.

Day 1b starts in around 2 hours, & today will be almost a blonde benefit.

We will see these guys today, amongst others.....

Dave "Monty Burns" Colclough

Thewy

Matt "b4Matt" Tyler

Rob "The Yongsta" Yong

Simon "Chubbs" Nowab

Roland de Wolfe, the reigning champion, one of several blonde WPT & WSOP Winners.

Ben "MilkyBarKid" Grundy.

John Gale, another WPT Winner.

Willie Tann, WSOP Bracelet Winner & blondeite.

John Kabbaj

Ian McDonald, from Gala Notts.

Anthony Lellouche

More to come when I remember them, or see them.

But as you can see, today's gonna be a humdinger, & maybe we will put together a "Ten to Follow" if you give us your suggestions as to who you'd like us to pay special attention to.

Joe Beevers played yesterday, but I don't know if the rest of the boys will be here today, I have yet to see any of them.

Have a look at the Internet Poker board for news of the Grosvenor Super Six event you are referring to.

All messages noted, thanks.

We still do not have the Overnight Chip counts, but this is France, remember.

Jen is not with us yet, she is sleeping like a baby, she was extremely tired yesterday. But i've arrived early to reserve us two workstations, the Updaters Corner here is hellish overcrowded, & there are loads of foreign Updaters.

The AFC has Wifi now, but it fell over yesterday, so it was lucky that Jen & i had our Vodafone thingy's.

Willie Tann just rung me, he's just this moment arrived in Paris, so he's gonna have to get his skates on.

Thanks Tighty.

The breaking news on the Bolton event is that it's almost certain, subject only to "clearance" from Rank & Grosvenor, that blonde will be running a Live Update for that event.

Hi Sofa. You are referring to the Poker 6 event, a new concept brought to you by Blue Square and Grosvenor Casinos. There is a total of £21,000 added across the weekend - £7,000 to the main prize pool, £9,000 to a consolation tournament of day 2 for day one losers and £5,000 to the Starting Table Saver prize.

To learn more about the event please take a look at http://www.bluesq.com/pokersix

or read this piece I did for Blonde on it http://www.blondepoker.com/index.php?q=node/2480

It will be possible to buy tickets for the £1,000 event but not until the lion's share of the qualifiers are over - anyone interested in buying in diirectly should email pokersix@bluesqpoker.com and they will be added to the reserve list. There are currently about a dozen people on the reserve list and it is anticipated that there will be roughly 30 or so seats available for direct buy in.  There is no obligation to buy a seat if you put yourself down on the reserve list, so anyone who wants to take part in the event would be advised to get on the reserve list asap and then keep on trying to qualify.

Yes,. the "we are jealous" theme is undoubtedly true. For an Updater this is THE worst time, just before the comp begins, it's horrible, as the desire to play is overwhelming, but once it starts, it's OK. And half an hour later, well, I woulda been out anyway.

This is the enigmatic & charismatic Anthony Lellouche. He will win a huge tourney soon, be very sure of that.

We shared a table in this very venue a year or two ago from start to finish, when, unsurprisingly, he crippled me early in the Final, leaving John Kabbaj to finish me off. I swear he Raised every hand for 2 days - just little niggly "Camel" type Rsaises. Tough to play against, he really is.

Amazingly, Rob Yong is up to 25,000 already! He rivered the nut straight, bet 5k on the end, & Matey Boy with top pair called in a flash! He then repeated the trick two hands later.

Rob tells me there were 7 limpers in each of the first few hands, & players were limping with hands such as KQ suited. He LOVES his table!

Jani Sointula (sorry about the spelling) is the fella with the flowing locks if I'm not mistaken. He might look a little odd, but he can't 'arf play poker. If I can learn to play the game, me & he will be on level terms......

News from Matt Tyler, who tells me he's just played a hand beautifully, given it's his biggest ever comp by a mile.

4 limpers, BB, a  serial over-bettor makes it 450, Matt calls with  9h Tc, the others all Pass.

Flop   7d Td 4s

Serial Bettor makes it 2.5k, Matt calls, he thinks his Ten is good.

Turn..... 8h

Now Matt is up & down, Serial Bettor makes it 5k, Matt still thinks he's winning, but maybe he shoulda pushed here.

River.... Ad

Serisal Man bets 5k, leaving just 2.5k behind now. Matt dwells, eventually calls, & Serial Man insta-mucks.

Matt Tyler, blondeite, 31k. How good does that sound?

This is Thomas Somebody, who won the Somewhere EPT - was it Deauville? Interesting gharacter.

I do wish Jen were here, she knows these things. I really don't know where she has got to, it's a little worrying.

When we left last night, the cash games of all sizes, smallish to ludicrous, were in full swing.  I have a feeling some of the players at the cash tables may not have made it back to bed... nothing like the 24hour sound of chips being twiddled...

Incidentally, we apologise for the non-roundup of chip counts etc. last night, but our hunch was correct, they're just not available to anyone even now.

Jen & I just had a ciggie break, during which a nice gentleman tapped me on the shoulder & said he enjoyed watching me on PNL. (No, really, he did....). Turned out his name is Tom Cherrett, (online "annacash") & he said he just played €10 MTT's & stuff, a "novice" he described himself as. "What you doing here Tom?", I enquired.

It transpires that he entered a Freerill on Poker Heaven - 1,400 runners - & won the thing, winning himself a seat in the Paris WPT. He ended Day 1a with 26,975. How wonderful.

Gotta be nice to him, he represents over 50% of my Fan Club, if we include Flushy.

Matt has just over 30k now, after dropping a few thou earlier. He just made a BIG call with AQ (no spades) on a 4 spade board, the bet on the end was 10k & Matt eventually called, Matey Boy insta-mucked.

Thewy has 20k, Chubbs 14k.

Thomas Middlethon just had quads, & is sailing along nicely on 19k.

I just spotted Julian Gardner for the first time today, he has 20k.

Jani Sointula has moved to the Thewy/Chubbs/Marcel Table. That could turn nasty.

Mat Tyler has just irritated his entire table. He was squished in Seat 2, & he asked everyone to move round to give some space. Being mainly French, they ignored him with studied indifference, so he got the dealer to sort it. They all grudgingly moved, but he got a few black looks shot in his direction. Does he give a monkeys? I doubt it.

Rob Yong is OUT.

He had AA v K-T, & even picked up 4 to the nut flush on the flop, but K-T man had 2 pair. Rob's Pre-Flop R was 1,200 (blinds 50-100) & the flop came K-T-2, ALL diamonds, & Rob had the A of Diamonds. K-T man moved in, Rob felt he had to call, but he's toast, as the turn & river were both blank hearts. K-T man has 58,000.

Rob was extremely complimentary about K-T man's play. Sort of. Ahem.

That's poker. One day all the way, next day, early bath.

I have not answered the Rob Yong hand questions, as we have persuaded Rob to Post his thoughts, which he is inputting right now. From the horses mouth.

The way it played, which is different to how it was first described, Kuskas had, imo, every right to call pre-flop, & Rob "just" got very unlucky. These things happen.

Three days ago, I R'd pre-flop with KK, & Rob busted me with 4-5. It's just Poker, & it stings a bit when you are on the wrong end, but we can't have our cake & eat it. Rob wanted K-T man to call pre-flop.

Title: Stuck in Paris...............
Post by: Djinn on June 13, 2006, 07:09:38 PM
By Rob Yong:

Not the best day today of my life - I missed my plane this morning due to leaving my passport at home and had to get a taxi to Birmingham, tried to make myself feel better and bought a 1st class ticket only to find out that that the plane had no 1st class seating when I boarded - how does this happen?

After these 2 mishaps I was over the moon to have 30,000 chips after level 2, double average. Anyway, how ironic is this. I'm just having a debate about AA with a guy who raised 6,000 pre-flop v a 300 raise, I was telling him what a plonker he was and he was saying that he didn't want AA. Guess what, while still in this conversation I look down on the BB and find 2 red Aces - what a coincidence.

The hand went like this:

A rock UTG raises 300, Mr Fish (playing any 2 cards out of position flat calls).
Now, Mr Fish has 31,000 after busting a guy in the most horrible way, so I decide to only raise 1200, as I know that he will pay me off if he hits top pair. UTG Mr Tight has passed to every RR so far so I'm prerry condfident of playing my AA heads-up V Mr Fish - who I know will call. I'm giving him about 2-1 pot odds - 900 to win 1800. The hands I put him on are KQ, KJ, KT, QJ, QT, JT or maybe A rag / small pair 99's or lower.

Flop  Kd Td 3d. Now, I have the Ace of diamonds and the Ace of hearts. I dont want to check raise him as the its unlikely that he won't take a free card on that flop, and I have bet every time that I am the raisor, so he would be suspicous if I checked - so I lead out 2,500, about 85% of the pot. I want him to think I have pair, but no diamond, and am protecting my hand V the turn, I also dont want to give him a free card wif he has QJ. Basically, I want him to RR me so I can move-all in.

But when I bet he annouces all-in immediately. I riffle my chips and think a bit, but at the end of the day, I'm just not passing this hand to this player in this situation becuase:

1. Worst Case: If he has 33 or TT I still have 7 outs (why would he move all in with a set, he would milk me, he''s that type of player, plus he knows I cannot have a made flush as the Kd is out there (AKd is the only hand he is scared of, so an all-in move means no set in my book.

2. 2nd Worse Case: If he has KT I have 14 outs (+an extra 3 on the turn). Now this is a big possibility, the MUG would call with this hand as he doesnt care about care about being potentially dominated. (I'm only calling him a mug cause he is, not cause I'm bitter, if he calls with 67s I have no problem, but KT is very dominated by a re-raisors probable hand of AK or KK). But, if he has this hand, I don't mind gambling ot get 60,000 chips anyway, I came to win, not grind.

3. Most Probable: He has K with the Qd or Jd and stick it all in without thinking, its a big hand for him, and a big move - THIS IS THE HANDS I PUT HIM ON

So, I called and he had KT offsuit, missed all my outs, It was pretty much an even money shot but hey, bad things come in 3's, so the rest of the day should be okay.

C'est La Vie. Rob

The point is - & I DO feel desperately sorry for Rob, he did nothing wrong at all - but if the hands were face up  pre-flop, would Rob wanna put his money in? Course he would. 8 times in 10 (or whatever) he scoops, & loves it, 2 times in 10 he gets busted. That's the nature of the game, & life.

When Rob busted my KK with 4-5 on Saturday, I WANTED his pre-flop call, & I WANTED his all-in flop bet. What value I had with KK, & what value Rob had today with AA.

Bad calls are good calls. Most of the time!

He had ambled across to blonde for some chip-counts. "We don't follow American's Mr Hellmuth" I say. "You follow me" says he.

I doubt it.

I am sure he will fix those little frens axx whxxxx, have I ever told u i hate the french????

Colclough shows how to win with AA - he even flops his set AND gets all-in.

Dave Colclough, 40k, approx. He won't let me near to count his stack, says I'm a bok. He's not wrong.

Now that I have regained my laptop, more tales from outside, rather than insight from inside...

How about some Aces-Cracking Bad Re-raise News Now?

So, there's a mid position limp, a predictable raise to 1,000 from the button, and then a young player in the small blind makes it 2,500, less predictably, from the manner in which he's been playing.

The original limper then makes a big old bet of all-in, for his 35k or so, covering both other players still in by a long way.  The button folds, but the small blind calls quick as a flash for a little under 10,000 with his Ad Aspades.  The big re-raiser shows Js Kc

Flop: Jc 6h 2d
Turn: 8s
River: Ks

A torrent of swearing from the French Aces-holder, in a mixture of colourful languages.

Last year's champ Roland de Wolfe, looking very summery with his white shirt and head-balanced sunglasses.  He's always been one of these players who can play these big tournaments while simultaneously chatting with whoever speaks his language sitting next to him, or across from him, or in the same room as him.

For example, just now, I heard him talking sports betting with Willie and Tony G (football, of course).  Tony G said, "If you can find me as a punter, you're a millionaire - I'm the worst sports bettor in the world."

I just found out about DC's elevating chips - but about half an hour previously when he had only 18k, I saw him take a couple of smaller pots from the same person with that quietly deliberate manner which is so much his style, and he looks to be as comfortable as can be.

Dinner break in 20 minutes, for that lengthy hour and three quarters - I think I may be off in search of steak with Norwegian blogger BA.

And sticking with the theme, here's a photo I left out of my last batch - the now exited Ben 'Milkybarkid' Grundy with a Norseman sat to his right - Snoopy challenge - Name That Norwegian!

All "requests" are being sorted by Jen, right now.

Jim Kerrigan has 12k, Jen has the rest. (of the counts......)

Well, we're back and play has restarted, after a delightfully gentle-breezy kind of meal outside on the Champs, once again.  I ordered a cheese omelette, and was slightly surprised to receive 3 fried eggs with cheese sprinkled generously on top.  Ate it anyway.

We're just scouting for those chip counts you were asking for - keep them coming in so I can keep tikay nice and busy.

Firstly - Jim Kerrigan  12,000    He was knocked to just 3k earlier after his nut flush was housed against on the river, and David Benyamin's Q5 cracked his KK...

Dinner was an open-air affair in a Pavement Cafe on the Champs Elysses.

Matt Tyler, Dave Colclough, Nick Slade, Tony Chessa, Thewy, Jen & me. Onion Soup, Egg benedictine, Spag Bol & Norweigan Salmon featured strongly - Monty Burns had the salmon for starter AND Main Course!

The bill was a mere €337 - gulp - but Monty Burns kindly paid for Jen & I.

OK, 2 more levels tonight, & play has re-commenced.

Blinds are 100-200, Running Ante 25, 90 minute levels, & 93 of todays original 117 survive.

Gonna be a huge field tomorrow at this rate.

Storakers - 12,600   Just lost a few to John Gale on a 6s 3s Kh flop after he bet 3,200 and found John putting him all-in.  Passed.  But here he was earlier, relaxing.

I am not aware of anyone sitting out.

They began with 10 to a table, and still are 10 to a table.

There are a few here Tighty - Hellmuth & Gohering, for example, but no real invasion force. I guess it's barely worth their while to travel so far, there must be €10k+ events in the US of A every week. To be honest, I don't feel their absence is a negative, Mr Wilson apart. And the Americans were not at all happy with the armed robbery thing here - the Americans have that wholly anti-violence thing going.

Title: Re: Paris WPT Live Update, Day 1b

I think the scheduling for WPT Paris has had the biggest effect. In 2004, the WSOP was earlier in the year, in the late spring, and everyone was free to travel to Paris. Last year it was right after the WSOP (when everyone was pokered out or broke), and this year it's right before the WSOP.

Plus, we just finished a WPT event here in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay, and there is a $10,000 event up in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, starting on Friday. (Not sure how many big pros will play in that one, since it won't be televised.)

None of the pros I've talked to have mentioned the robbery a few years back. I think it all comes down to travel schedules, jet lag, and things like that.

Sorry I missed the coverage yesterday, but I was still catching up on Mandalay Bay photos and coverage for myself. And I missed watching Isabelle, who busted in the last 15 minutes.  :(

But that's okay, I like following your coverage even when Isabelle and Jen aren't in action. Keep up the good work!

Oh, what poker players get up to in the dinner break - astounding story about some football related side action amongst the crazy old Norwegians - around €20,000 got, er, redistributed over dinner between their lot.  Mentalists.

Here they are down to 86 players, and I think might struggle to hit yesterday's target.

Apparently Ivey was playing some mega huge game (2000-4000euro limit or somesuch) with the usual gang, Lindgren, lGreenstein, Benyamine etc etc when the robbers came in..

Everyone was forced to the ground under the tables. Much screaming and panicing ensued.

Meanwhile Ivey was just looking for action. Under the table he whispered to Lindgren.

"Have you got a line on whether I get shot?" And then collapsing in fits of laughter...

Thewy's 55 hand, the Q came on the river? The 4 came on the turn? Runner runner clubs?

Tom, have you been drinking, or am I going senile - what Thewy 55 hand?

I am confused, & old. Please be gentle with me.

Dave Colclough is down to 26k or so.

He found  Qs Qh, and first to speak limped, next guy called, Dave Re-Raised to 2,500. The middle caller called the 2,500 RR (his total stack was 10k) with  3c 3h & flopped the set. He then bet all-in, & Dave got out of the way.

80 players remain from today's original 117 or 118. They are on 8 tables of 10.

Blinds are 200-400, Running Ante 25 (how cool is that?, we are 30 minutes into Level 5 after 9 hours!), & the average stack is 21,582. (They began with 15k).

The very thought makes me ache to play these type of comps. Think I'll try & save up my pennies & try & play some of these these jobbies.

The only gripe I would have - were I playing - would be I'd prefer to play 8 or 9 to a table. At 10 to a table, everyone is squished up terribly. Always seem to be the way that pokerists get all scrunged up, too many round an inadequately-sized table. Guess it cuts down on dealer costs, & frees up tables for revenue earning cash games.

Qualifier Feature Now -

Edward Rhee - qualified on Upperclass Poker, and this is his first live tournament of any kind of size - he was watching the action yesterday and keeping one semi-forlorn eye out for any representatives who look after online qualifiers, but, alas, was left all on his own...

In this picture he's scooping probably his biggest pot of the night, putting his shortstacked opponent all-in for 5,050 on the river and taking the 7k pot down.

Matt Tyler Takes Hit News Now -

That most recent of counts for him (23k) comes after some bad Aces on the button.  He raised, and got called by both blinds.  The flop came raggy with two hearts.  Check to Matt, who bets nice and sizeably, only to find the small blind re-raising and the big blind pushing in!  He folds, and, to his surprise, so does the small blind, despite putting in around 3/4 of his stack!

Possibly, Nice Person In Spain. (The comma is vital).

It would be a weird reason to do it, though!

It's just a hobby-horse of mine. Poker Rooms Europe-wide, we get squeezed into rooms & onto tables way too small.

At the Barca EPT last autumn, they used the "2 person" Heads-Up Tables as full size tables, & sat 8 players at them!

Regarding the ten-handed tables:

Generally, the WPT has no influence over the tournament until the final table. The casino's tournament director runs the tournament until then regarding blind structure, rulings, etc.

I would imagine it's either a house style for the ACF, or perhaps they were tight on space (sounds like it) and needed to fit as many players as possible.

In some American WPT events, they switch to nine-handed on Day Three, but again, it varies from casino to casino.

OK, in the hope that something really dramatic doesn't alter this too much in the last 3 minutes of play, here are the Chip Counts According to Me and Rolf:

Freddy Deeb      7,000
Patrick Bueno     7,000
Roland de Wolfe  8,000
Henrik Witt         58,000
Kurt Kohlberg     49,000
Willie Tann         6,400
Johan Storakers  22,000
Andreas Hagen   43,000
Pete Haslam        20,000
Theo Jorgensen   7,500

Matt Tyler             19,450
Anthony Lellouche  20,000
Jim Kerrigan           19,000

Sorry, this is not a totally comprehensive count, and there may be a 1000 or so misplaced, but it's the best we can do.  The crowds are milling and the cash games are buzzing.  I might hang around to get a few stories before heading for the air-conditioned sanctuary of the hotel...

Yep - Tom (aka ANAKASH) qualified via our Online Series of Poker - a series of 12 freeroll's culminating in a final where the winner took a seat in Paris!

To find out a little more about Tom you can read his player profile on the Community section of our site.

Good luck Tom from myself and everyone at Poker Heaven!!

A bit late I know - but is it that nice Hennig chap who played at Luton in January and then liked it taking our money so much stayed for the rest of the week down at the Vic? If so a very nice chap - and seems to specialise in calling with filth and taking all the chips.
