Incredibly, it looks like being a slighty late start, but I've just spotted ol' Mickey Sexton finishing off his bacon and egg and trundling into the room holding the final - that has to be a good sign, surely?

Anyhow, it's all kinda surreal here. All the press are based in the neighbouring room, carefully watching one of the two T.V screens on offer. Vince Van Patten is having his brekkie across the other side of the room. There are even dolly birds with curlers in their hair - they must be those young ladies who have the oh so crucial job of carrying the money to the table.

What I'm most mythed about though is my failure to spot the prime beef that presents the show, does the interviews, etc. I'm sure she's around here somewhere, but no sign of her as of yet...

All-in preflop.

Yeh raises, Schuhl reraises, and Yeh moves all-in. Schuhl makesw the call, as chips are low, but looks on in dismay to find his  Ahrt Qh dominated by Ad Kd

First four cards gave a glimmer of hope for a split pot, whilst also removing the Qc as a winning river.

Tc 2c 8c 4c

However, it wasn't to be, as the dealer pulled out an irellevant 9s

Schuhl exits the cardroom to a raptuous applause.

Wahlroos raises preflop, Yeh calls.

Flop = 6h Jd 9s

Both check

Turn = Jc

Wahlroos bets out, Yeh calls.

River = Qc

Wahlroos moves all-in and Yeh folds.

Big pot goes to the Wahlroos.

Jani Sointula raises to 32,000 - takes the pot.

Thomas Wahlroos raises to 36k, Philip Yeh calls.  Jani re-raises to 140k(?) and takes it.

Thomas raises to 40k, Christian Grundtvig calls.  Flop 2 3 x  check, Thomas bets 60k, wins that one.

And that's your lot for this 20 minutes - as ever, it's fairly slow as every bet is announced in French and English, and there's lots of pausing (not by the players, though, I'm pleased to report, for once).  I have a 20 degree view of one of the TV sets feeding the crowd with exciting final table action, and if I turn my neck almost all the way round I can see every hand live.  This is actually a big bonus, as when something exciting happens I'm supposed to tip off the press who'll get off the comfy sofas and move to the middle of the room.

Philip Yeh is out in 5th place, winning €131,250

Thomas Wahlroos raised, and Philip moved the lot in over the top - I think somewhere in the region of 440k.  Thomas called with Ac Ks, and found 9h 9d for Philip.
Flop: 8c 4s 6s
Turn: Ahrt
River: 8d

Philip Yeh is absolutely gutted, and, as can be seen from the photo below, he's wearing his heart on his sleeve.

Quote from Van Patten: "Wahlroos has been beating him up ever since this final started, and now, it's all over for Philip Yeh."

Meanwhile, a devestated Mr Yeh encounters the press...

131k should soften the blow though.

Snoop, if you get close to Mr Sexton tell him the ROOKIE says thanks for the chips in last years $5K pot limit holdem at the WSOP. He was the victim of  4s 7h

I raised in level 1, got 5 callers, flop of  5d 6c 7h, Mr Sexton had  5h 8h and he was nice enough to donate 3,500 of his 5,000 starting chips to me. The 4/7 held and the legend grew 8) Who says American poker players like Mike are not nice guys.

Chippy count:

Thomas Wahlroos -- 1,367,000
Jani Sointula -- 892,000
Henrik Witt -- 681,000
Christian Grundtvig -- 541,000

And on that note, the players are being summoned back into the room.

Jani and Christian see a flop - 4h 3d Th   Jani checks and Christian wins it with a 25k bet.

Thomas raises to 60k, Henrik Witt calls.  7s 7h 2s the flop.  Henrik takes that one with a bet out of 150,000.

It does looks a little ungainly when they bet with these 'plaques' - large rectangular things which are the special ACF high denomination chips, if you can call them that.  A bit of idiosyncrasy is nice to see on the WPT though - you can always tell which one the French one is by a single peek at the finalists' stacks.

I referred in the Day 1 Update to Joe Beevers appearing, to my eye, to be "not as focused as usual", & I elaborated on this on both the TV shows, suggesting Joe was in fact missing his two beautiful girls - well 3, actually!

I was chatting to Joe today, & he told me that, on the contrary, he was very focused indeed, as much, if not more, than ever.

I am happy to put the record straight, though it was no big deal to Joe.

In fact, the only reason I mention it is because Joe gave me one of those really odd suggestions as to why he maybe did not look as focused as usual.

"I did not have any hair gel on".

Well there you go. Maybe I could get Sponsorship from Brylcreem.

1 x Christian (button raise picking up blinds)
1x Henrik (ditto)
Thomas raises to 60k, Jani calls, Christian raises big  - 260k and gets them off it.

And while we're sat here staring at a TV with the sound so low it's a kind of gently French murmur, the Presentress of the WPT show repeats her intro type phrases over and over right behind us. "Read 'em and weep, or read 'em and win - welcome to this week's WPT event..." "One more time..."

Big Dwell and Potential Elimination News Now -

The last five or six minutes have been spent watching Jani think hard about calling Thomas' bet (all-in) on the river, with the board having arrived Qs 9s 3s 3d 2c.
Whatever he was considering must have been tricky - it doesn't look like he's left himself all that much back (although it's very hard to tell via the TV).  Round of applause for Wahlroos as he scoops in that large pot.

Kc Aspades 6d Kd  - I hear the words "action flop" from somewhere behind me, but there really isn't much - although I would be fairly certain that Jani will make his move soon.

I will remind you that there is one Special Red Plaque which is either worth 100k or 200k - something big anyway, since the TV cameras like to do close-ups of it every now ant then.  This is another of the funny traditions here - the chips are all old-style cash game chips...pre-Euro they would be worth their face value!  So they've found a use for these old-school chips - and there's no point slipping a 20k-er into your pocket since they're no longer in use.

Kc 8h 6h Qc  Thomas bets on the turn 175k - Henrik moves in! And that's enough to win him a nice big pot.

Double up for Jani Sointula!

In a hand which sent the Danes into a frenzy, Jani moved in and received a call from Henrik Witt.
Jani: Ac 9c
Henrik: Qs Kc

And the Henrik fans were calling for a Queen or King as they oh-so-slowly dealt out the board.  It came 9-high, giving the agressive Finnish player a stack once more.  Not sure how greatly Henrik's stack was damaged, but he didn't look too happy.

Jani raises to 80k, Thomas calls.
Flop: 8d Ahrt 6c  Thomas bets out 150,000 - Jani moves in, after a brief eyebrow-furrowing dwell, and Thomas faces a similar situation to earlier, again deciding to give up the pot.

Thomas has seen his chip lead disappearing so far - there aren't so many of those plaques remaining behnd his chips, although I think he's held on to the biggie.

And from little stack to big stack, Jani has built a little plaque tower on either side of his traditionally-shaped chips.

Jani raises to 100k, called by Christian.
Flop: 6s Tc 4h  Check from Jani, Christian takes that one fast with a bet.  Six-figures in chips are passing round every hand, and the 10k/20 blinds with 2k ante are enough to fight over.

Jani takes another one preflop with a little-raise-squashing re-raise to 250,000... he seems quite partial to that - waiting for a standard raise and preferably a call and then just picking it up without a flop.

******************************10 min break*******************************

Will try to ascertain the chip count during it.

We hear from a reliable insider that the action is a bit slow for poor old jetlagged Mike Sexton, who's dozing off and getting a poke in the ribs from Vince van Patten.  To be honest, I've seen much worse - they're still playing, although flops are a bit thin on the table.

Sorry for the lack of hand reporting going on - the breaks tend to become a bit elastic as the 'audience' has to be pressed back in in a tight ring around the final table, the players hooked up etc etc.  I think the lady who organises the audience is a bit surprised at the lack of interest in packing in there around the players themselves.  I think Europeans, and the French especially, are less interested in getting their heads in the background on TV, and more interested in sitting on comfy leather sofas where they can smoke.

Sorry to detour off the picture of the hand for a moment, but there's one of the poker variety going on right now..

Flop seen: 7d Ks 7s after Jani flat called a 200k raise from Christian.  Check from Christian - Jani bets 150k.  And takes another one.

Clash of the Finns - Wahlroos against Jani (with Thomas W. all in) "must win this pot to stay alive in this Championship" helpfully reminds Mike.

Thomas shows:  Aspades 3d
Jani shows:   Kc Js

Flop: 9d 8d Ahrt
Turn: Qc
River: 3s

And the early chip leader gets some breathing space after experiencing life as a short stack.

Blinds are now 25,000/50,000, and something's just been raced off (the 1ks?).  But play is continuing.

Thomas Wahlroos moves in (again) for 450k with Aspades 3h
Christian calls!  And Thomas has found a monster 3-handed behind him - Qc Qd

Flop:  2s 8c 7c
Turn:  7d
River:  6c

So Thomas Wahlroos finishes 3rd, winning €243,750

There is a slight confusion over payouts as the wpt online prizes don't equate to the ones being advertised here...

from wpt site...

1st = $997,500 (€774k)

2nd = $498,750 (€395k)

3rd = 341,250 (€270k)

And although Jani just doubled up to chip leader, Christian is hardly giving up.  He just re-raised Jani's button raise to 300k, making him pass, and just now he called Jani's button raise to 150,000.

They saw a flop (yes! a flop!) Th Ts Kh.
Christian checked, Jani threw in the one red 200k plaque, and Christian moved in.  Again, the aggressive Mr. Sointula was forced to pass.  The Danes in the room are still very excited.

Anther flop, this time the Td 3s Qd
Christian bet 75k, Jani raised-225k, pass...

And I think I heard Mike Sexton correctly when he said the blinds just became 40k/80k!  Pricey, or what.  Again something tells me they're not getting the same degree of Play they've had through the previous three days.

This is pretty much standard for the WPT. The casino controls the structure until the televised final table and then they are forced to play it by WPT's structure for the television, to reduce editing costs and to keep the crowd more alive throughout.

More's the pity...

Title: Re: Paris WPT Final - Live Update
Post by: Djinn on June 16, 2006, 05:54:56 PM
As for the counts, El Yortle et al, really can't guess from the TV - I reckon Jani is still the leader but there isn't a lot between them.  If I can get into the StudioRoom in the next break I'll try to get some counts, as there's something about the flat image on TV which makes it very hard to estimate the stacks.

The stacks look pleasingly enormous now - towers in front of Christian Grundtvig especially.  He's re-raised Jani's button raises massively (all-in on two occasions) a few times now, and picks up a quarter mil in chips each time that move works.  I think eventually it'll get all in preflop, however.

Meanwhile the crowd has thickened, but we're still in our corner on some sofas.  As long as someone's here at all times it should be safe.

Jani raises to 200k on the button.  Christian's very vocal Danish support group out here goes, "Any Ace go all in!"  And he does just that.  Another pass from Jani.

Oh yes, now we get that tension-draining recording of the prizes being allotted and hands being shaken and interviewers interviewing etc. etc.  Let's hope they do it in one take... we'll see if we can get a couple of snaps when they eventually emerge.

Typically (I remember being surprised about this last year) the room is already clearing, and any minute now the audience chairs will be whisked off and the lounge will look untouched for decades, as usual.  Some cheering, a shrug, and everyone goes off to play cash.  :)

Mike Sexton is literally booming down the microphone as he thanks blah, blah, and blah.

And off he goes again... same spiel.

It appears a lot more spontaneous on the box.

Jani...

A man of few words

He bigs up Jani first, saying, "how are you feeling?"

He gets a one-worder, "Disappointed."

And now "Here's to our champion, from Denmark, Christian Grundtvig!"

He also gets entry to the$25,000 Bellagio WPT like the sugary icing on the million dollar cake.

Snoopy has braved the Room to try to sneak some pics, as it looks like we're not going to be granted high level clearance.  I think it was a bit of a 'shove hand with camera in it round the door and hope' moment, but before he was ejected he got one, to round off our update for the day.  We're off for steak.

It's been a fun week, but a tiring one. Boy, am I pleased to jam in that fork. The tummy's rumbling and I'm dying for a steak, so I'll probably stick the fork in that instead.

Over and out

And that's it from the WPT Paris - it's been five days of fun, in a fabulous setting where our crowd navigation skills were honed and our attention held by the high standard of play and large numbers of players we've seen before.

I hope to have a similar excuse to visit Paris next year...

Bye all.
