Title: urgent car buying advice Post by: madasahatstand on June 17, 2006, 06:24:42 PM can anyone make my mind up for me
saw this wee car todat and the owner is selling it at 6300. she says she will go to 6k. ive laways wanted one of these but im a bit scared to go for it as its only got 2 seats. 80 percent of the time im in the car alone and brad has a car......mmmmmmmmmm here she is ive done a data check and she looks clean. anythng else i should worry about. the wee car is gleaming. photo doesnt do it justice [attachment deleted by admin] Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: Newmanseye on June 17, 2006, 06:35:32 PM Thats the hard top version was never my cup of tea, but price wise its seems reasonable.
Get a mechanic to check it over though Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: madasahatstand on June 17, 2006, 06:48:33 PM Thats the hard top version was never my cup of tea, but price wise its seems reasonable. Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: madasahatstand on June 17, 2006, 06:53:35 PM on the top gear site it gives a review. says its good in terms of depreciation. i dont know how long i would keep it. ive no plans so sell if i buy unless it proves to be impracticle

It sounds like a decent car, 1 owner, 35k in 7 years (100 miles a week.) Do you like the colour? Edit: Where has it been serviced? The above info is great, but it still doesnt mean it hasn't been clocked. Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: Newmanseye on June 17, 2006, 07:04:28 PM looks like a good buy on the top of things mad, and you have done your homework, all thats left to do is test drive it and listen for noises... o and het a feel for the car pulling and the general stuff.
as long as thats ok you should be on to a winner Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: madasahatstand on June 17, 2006, 07:07:31 PM i LOVE it. it sparkles in the sun. thanks nem. maybe it is the car of my dreams, except for maybe a bmw roadster but i cant afford that. i feel a purchase coming on. i think i just need pushing. brad says 'its up to you'. no support at all :)
mad Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: Nem on June 17, 2006, 07:10:29 PM You should go for it, like Newman said previously, on a test drive make sure there is no funny noises, knocking etc...
Still call up Mazda though, see if any work or other stuff has been done on the car. Has the car been serviced at a Mazda dealership? Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: madasahatstand on June 17, 2006, 07:12:55 PM looks like a good buy on the top of things mad, and you have done your homework, all thats left to do is test drive it and listen for noises... o and het a feel for the car pulling and the general stuff. as long as thats ok you should be on to a winner i feel like an anorack saying it but i met the lassie selling it today and she let me have a go. i flooded the engine when i put the accelerator dont. she says you dont have to touch the peddle. :o brad said a bit of white smoke initially came out of the exhaust but went away as soon as we were off. i thought it drove ok. different to my renault megane scenic when im right up above the traffic. i wish i was rich and i could get lots of cars. porshe wagon thing looks awesome, or a landrover. the choice would be endless. Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: madasahatstand on June 17, 2006, 07:15:57 PM yes its got the full mazda dealership yearly service record.
one last question it has a faint scratch on one of the back wings and a little ding in the drivers door. the owner says she got a quote for £50 to fix the ding. should i brass neck it and ask for another £200 off to get it repaired? or is the 300 discount enough. i dont know if i should ask. that sale is getting nearer Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: Nem on June 17, 2006, 07:17:52 PM yes its got the full mazda dealership yearly service record. one last question it has a faint scratch on one of the back wings and a little ding in the drivers door. the owner says she got a quote for £50 to fix the ding. should i brass neck it and ask for another £200 off to get it repaired? or is the 300 discount enough. i dont know if i should ask. that sale is getting nearer Offer her £5800 with a smile on your face, say that you phoned mazda and the ding and scratch will cost £200 to fix. Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: RFC on June 17, 2006, 07:20:25 PM The AA do a good check for you and its not too dear
my work always gets them to check the old cars before they sell them on and provides the certifacate with the car try and ask the seller to do the same .. if you dont ask ... :D Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: Dannypoker on June 17, 2006, 07:31:52 PM The car seems like a reasonable deal.
A few things to check: 1/ AA do a full 100 point check of the car and it costs around £100. Money well worth spending as the last thing you want is to find something wrong with it a few months down the line. 2/ The mileage seems very low for a car of this age so make sure its has a full service book by a main dealer with all the stamps. If she has past MOT's that aslo good. 3/ Be aware that the colour is not the easiest for resale and you may have probs finding a buyer when you eventually come to sell it and you will also find it may loose a bit more money as a result as oposed to the more popular colours. 4/ There is a company called dentmasters look them up on the net and most dealerships use them to remove minor dings and scratches. They will also come to your house and offer a very good service. Finally if its the car of your dreams go for it but negotiate hard, if everything stacks up then it makes sense. You will have a lot of fun in a car like this especially with the weather as it is. The MX5 has had some very good reviews in past years for performance and reliablilty. A friend of mine had one and she loved it. Good luck. Dan. Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: madasahatstand on June 17, 2006, 07:39:56 PM cheers dan. thats all very good advice and also from everyone else. i love the colour and am sure someone else would if i sell it. thats assuming ill get it. fingers crossed X
heres hoping i dont go beetroot when i ask for the 200 discount. still i could do it over the phone :) Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: Sark79 on June 17, 2006, 07:49:12 PM That's a nice car Mad. Go for it. Good luck

Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: lazaroonie on June 18, 2006, 12:15:01 AM I used to work in the motor trade, if you PM me the reg number and as long as one of my old mates is working tomorrow I'll get them to run it through experian and look up it's value in Glasses Guide. book value for a private sale on a car like this is £5.5K if you want to give your friend an extra monkey, then its up to you. at 5.5K you are still giving them 800 quid more than they will get on a "flat" trade in. Edit : Just noticed that they have a hardtop included in the sale - so you can add an extra 4-500 quid onto the price, so the deal looks a lot better now. If it was me, I wouldnt be paying 6 grand. your choice though... Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: madasahatstand on June 18, 2006, 08:34:38 AM laz
what would you pay? i need to get back to the woman today cheers mad Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: Nem on June 18, 2006, 09:01:36 AM £5750-£6000
Book price doesnt take into consideration one lady owner from new and full main dealer service history + it has only done 35k! If the book price says £5500 the f/s history and 1 lady owner and low mileager is definitely worth £200-£500. Title: Re: urgent car buying advice Post by: M3boy on June 18, 2006, 11:33:57 AM Take £5,500 in cash round there, show them the money, and say

When you make your offer, ALWAYS make the offer in person WITH the cash. You will be suprised how "seeing" the money changes people's minds on how much they will take for a car. Nemisis, the book price I am quoting does take into account the mileage - one lady owner is largely irrelevant, because as soon as you buy it, it has now had two owners. The overall condition of the vehicle and service history is important, and the book price I am quoting is based on excellent condition and Full dealer SH. In my experience, in all purchases I ever made, homework done, I was always prepared to pay a little over the price to make sure I got the thing I really wanted - I've never regretted one of those decisions but would a hated to spend my life missing out for the sake of a few quid.
