Title: What is the best invention ever? Post by: Sark79 on July 14, 2006, 11:46:18 PM I am not sure what invention has benefited the world the most. However one that would be high up on my list would be the WISDOM "easy floss DAILY FLOSSER". Until yesterday I had never seen one of these things. I had always used the traditional dental floss. While at my dentists appointment yesterday, I mentioned to my hygienist that reaching the back teeth with dental floss was an incredibly difficult task as I had a sore jaw after being punched recently.
She presented me with a short stick with a piece on dental floss attached to the end. As soon as I got home I rushed to the mirror to try my new toy. Wow, it is fantastic. I liked it so much, I went to boots today and bought a pack of 15. It basically allows you to reach the difficult areas in your mouth with ease. It has a long handle and also has a pick bit contained in the handle. What a fantastic invention. If you rush quickly and get yourself down to boots, they are doing a special offer of two packs for £2.29. I recommend it. Back to the greatest invention ever. It may be one of these : alarm clocks, batteries, phone, wheel, vaccines, light bulbs or the computer. But I will vote for the DAILY FLOSSER. Title: Re: What is the best invention ever? Title: Re: What is the best invention ever? Post by: leighton_87 on July 14, 2006, 11:58:10 PM This is something no two people will ever agree on. But after giving it five mintues of thinking I came up with lists, lightbulb, internet, computers, telephones, televisions, etc. But the thing that all these things are dependant on electricity. So I'm going to give that my vote.
Although thinking about this I kept saying to myself whats the greatest invention of all time and then it hit me.....TIME. Where would we be without the clock and the calander. So maybe the greatest invention of all time is time. Title: Re: What is the best invention ever? Post by: Trace on July 14, 2006, 11:58:51 PM Sliced bread!

Methods to tell the time have been invented, but the passage of time is one of those things that our universe relys upon in order for life to be sustained. Of course time is an invention... we chose for there to be 24 hours in a day 60 minutes in an hour. Our definition of the passing of "time" (for want of a better word) is our own making... the linear manner of it isn't, however. Our understanding of linear time is our own invention, we probably have little understanding of the true manner of passing of linear "time". Gosh that's a bit heavy for this time of night innit? Title: Re: What is the best invention ever? Post by: Sark79 on July 15, 2006, 12:06:01 AM Clocks do keep everything in order. Alarm clocks keep us on time, although they are those annoying things that send a piercing beep into your head at 6am every morning. One day I will mentally program my mind to wake my body up without the need for an alarm clock. When that happens there will be calm in my life.

Time isn't an invention, its always been there. Ratehr, its a discovery :D We invented ways to tell the passage of time, yup. So, telling the time is an "invention"... but I'd argue that to be a discovery as well. 24 hours in a day, well, we all know that to be the passage of time it takes for the earth to revolve 1 cycle. And 60 minutes in an hour, well, I'm not quite sure how we got there but it follows a scientific theory. Gravity wasn't invented. An apple didnt land on Newtons head and he decided "ooh, that apple landed on my head! Therefore I am deciding that gravity is 9.8 whatevers". He worked out through theory and discovery that the strength of the force pulling the apple to the earth follows a formula. Just like the person creating the calendar and the timepiece. HEAVY indeed lol (puns galore) Title: Re: What is the best invention ever? Title: Re: What is the best invention ever? Post by: thetank on July 15, 2006, 12:21:55 AM Electricity may be making our lives more convienent, but is it not speeding up the destruction of the planet? In the grand scheme of things, does that make it a great invention?
Calenders, pfft. The Sun rises, it's time to hunt and stuff. The sun sets, it's time to kick back. Get more wood when the days get shorter, sit down more when the days get longer. Not convinvced. Title: Re: What is the best invention ever? Post by: Lee on July 15, 2006, 12:40:05 AM Sark, you are gonna pi$$ yourself. I have raved on about those things for a few years now, they are brill. I remember a party at my house, where at least 10 people were all using them, the living room was in a kind of silence as they are addictive and make you floss for ages. Now most of those still talk about how good they are to this day.
I have however moved on from these now as they have an electric one now THE HUMMINGBIRD, its the same shape etc, but vibrates. Dentist got me hook line and sinker. Do you floss at all Lee, yes, oh well have you seen these new things, oh no wow, ill have 2. Language, and alphabet, thats tricky, which alphabet, which language, there are so many, they come and go like the sands of time, Heck you can make up your own language if you saw fit, put try making up a mathmatical problem and then prove it, thats where you will have a challenge on your hands. Id put electricity and the English language ahead of it Well if any language was to be on the top 10 inventions list we would have a tougher decision than just saying English, Latin, Chinese, German, all have fine points and have contributed to the English language I'm many ways, as for electricity, that has been about longer than the amoeba, Electricity has been in nature probably from the creation of existence, in for the creation of this planet, and we had no part in it creation, we simply realised it was there and available. The Zero's idea took a little while to develop within the Hindu Arabic numeral system; it is recognition that, in a place-value system (as in an abacus too), a numeral for zero is required in order to position the digits precisely. The number zero was probably discovered almost as soon as numbers were discovered. ' Zero ' is after all synonymous with ' none '. What took thousands of years was to invent a special symbol for the number zero, and then to incorporate it into a system of numeration. The discovery of Zero was made only trice in history: by Babylonian scholars, the Hindus and the Mayans. The ancient Babylonians did not use zero in their numerical representations but left a blank sometimes to indicate the absence of units of a certain order.
