Title: A public declaration of my intent Post by: Claw75 on August 06, 2006, 08:02:13 PM tomorrow I go back to working 5 days a week for the first time since my daughter was born three and a half years ago. I've decided to tie this in with my first serious attempt in a fair while to give up smoking. I figure the more people I tell, the more likely I am to succeed, so I'm telling you all! I really want to do this, and, having given up for a considerable length of time before I know I can do it, although it will be tough. Anyway, wish me luck!

As others have said: 'One day at a time.' Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: thetank on August 06, 2006, 09:25:00 PM Allen Carr's Easy Way To Give Up Smoking
Couldn't recommend it more. Bollox to cutting down, bollox to patches, gum, gaining weight. Don't worry about it. It doesn't use aversion therapy, or patronizing "smoking kills by the way" blurb. (We kinda know that already, it doesn't stop us) The book helps you give up smoking through sheer force of logic alone. Nemesis and Tank swear by it. :)up Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: thetank on August 06, 2006, 09:27:45 PM The key thing is you are not giving up smoking. You are escaping from it's clutches.
You are not giving up anything, being a non-smoker will help you enjoy life more. The best thing is, if you approach it the right way, it's not tough at all, it's liberating and enjoyable. I'll close by saying this.... BUY THE BOOK BUY THE BOOK BUY THE BOOK Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: Claw75 on August 06, 2006, 09:38:11 PM I read that last time I 'gave up' Tank - for 2 weeks! What would you call it if not aversion therapy?
Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: thetank on August 06, 2006, 09:40:45 PM Ok, fair enough. Only trying to help just in case (apparently it works sometimes)
I read it and gave up for 2 days. :D *Lights a fag* It was on the plane to Vegas. The thing is, packs of fags are like $5 over there, and you can smoke in museums ffs. Still, hmmmm, might read it again. Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: Claw75 on August 06, 2006, 09:45:29 PM lol!
I was just interested in your viewpoint, because when people have asked me what the book is like I usually say something like 'it's just basic aversion therapy and reminding you how bad smoking is for your health etc etc, and here was someone telling me they had seen something completely different in it!!!! Incidentially, did you know he started smoking again, and now has lung cancer? Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: Nem on August 06, 2006, 09:55:49 PM I read the book over 3 years ago and I'm so glad I did.
I haven't smoked since. Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: brad.strider on August 06, 2006, 10:01:47 PM lol! i might be wrong, but i think he died last week!I was just interested in your viewpoint, because when people have asked me what the book is like I usually say something like 'it's just basic aversion therapy and reminding you how bad smoking is for your health etc etc, and here was someone telling me they had seen something completely different in it!!!! Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: byronkincaid on August 06, 2006, 10:45:14 PM I read in the paper that he had lung cancer but not that he'd started smoking again. He used to smoke 100s a day.
Good luck Claire, I found that i needed a strong motivation to give up. Have you got one? Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: thetank on August 06, 2006, 10:46:58 PM Shame. One could draw some cheap irony from an anti-cigarette guru smoking and contracting lung cancer.
His legacy is that he has helped thousands of people though. (Or Nemesis at least) I saw the book as being a reprogramming, rather than aversion. It did have aversion type chapters though. Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: bhoywonder on August 06, 2006, 11:19:36 PM anybody tried laser therapy or any psychiatric approach??
Im in the clutches of addiction myself Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: Claw75 on August 06, 2006, 11:31:15 PM anybody tried laser therapy or any psychiatric approach?? Im in the clutches of addiction myself Not tried anything like that before, but this time round I'm going to try a little tip I read in a magazine this week. It's to do with a 'finger tapping' tecnique. It says that when you crave a cigarette, you should tap repeatedly on the point between your little and ring finger repeating "I accept that I am addicted to cigarettes, and even though I crave one, I still respect myself" - apparently the craving passes after that. I don't know, but worth a try anyway! Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: raab11 on August 06, 2006, 11:51:29 PM good luck claw. if its really what you want to do.
however hopefully its a personal decision, if so i congratulate you on making a wise choice for u and those around you. if you are bowing to the damn anti smoking police then don't, smoking IS big, it IS clever, it DOES make you look cool and it tastes MIGHTY fine. hope i havent muddied the waters gl raab Title: Re: A public declaration of my intent Post by: Claw75 on August 06, 2006, 11:52:11 PM haha - no raab, totally my own choice!

He is now helping people quit smoking, phobias etc through the same methods that mr Mckenna advises. He has had some brilliant results .

I stopped at the end of January with the aid of patches. I used them on my thigh and when I got a craving I rubbed it, placebo effect it was, but it worked. I read Allen Carr's book after I'd been using the patches for 2 weeks and felt such a fraud still using them that I tore off the patch and haven't looked back since. Beware using food to beat the cravings though, I put on a stone in weight, and I am so angry with myself, cos I'm finding losing it again tough. I'm getting there slowly, but very slowly. Again best of luck and we are all rooting for you! Trace xx |
