Title: Top 10 - Naff, feel-good 80's films.
Post by: thetank on August 18, 2006, 12:28:55 AM
In at number 10, Michael J Fox in The Concierge.

Turns out they mixed up the envelopes...oh dear.
But it's ok, the guy who he bought some cheapo jewellery for and stuff, fancies building his hotel anyway.
...and I think he got the girl too.

They don't make em like that anymore.

Someone change that mans name to thedicegirl  ;D

What can I say, I love my chick flicks  :D

In my defence I did correct dik9 that both the Warriors and the Wanderers were released in 1979 and not the 80's. The fact that the Warriors is my favourite film and I have every version of the film, a copy of the original scipt, completed the xbox on every level and own numerous pieces of memorabilia hopeful saves me from the title dicegirl  :D

Isn't it amazing how an 80s film thread quickly degenerates into

1) anything from the eighties

2) any film from the seventies as well, even porn

3) any TV show from the seventies

4) any computer games from the eighties

Not to mention the fact that I can't work out if we're listing films we love, films we hate, or films we love to hate.

Ok...

NAFF-ish eighties films we love to hate:

Red Sonja (Schwarzenegger: "I can't kill it, it's made of metal!")

Ladyhawke (Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer)

Krull... (nuff said)

---

btw.. did anyone seriously suggest that 'Brazil' was a bad film?  straight red for that one :redcard:

Films I also love to hate, but also love: David Lynch's Dune. So much about it is good, and also so much about it is also downright awful.

E.G. Francesca Annis, Patrick Stewart and Brad Dourif...  ;tightend;

BUT: Sting, The Beast Rabban and the guy who played Baron Harkonnen ...  ;tracet;

I could go on, probably will... you can try and stop me but you might have to get out the restraints.

Classic line but don't get me started for I shall start quoting a number of classic lines from the Warriors:

We're going in there with nothing. Were going in there like everybody else, nine guys, no weapons.
And Ajax's classic line "I'm going to shove that bat up your arse and turn you into a popsicle"

Sorry for insulting you , but i never saw it until the eighties.  :blonde:

I'm not at all insulted, I'm just guilty of being a Warriors anorak  :D

Has anybody seen the films the Bronx Warriors 1 & 2, a poor mans version of the Warriors. Surely these qualify as naff but I'm not so sure about feel good.

Did you have to dismantle the handlebars to get your colours back on your Grifter? Hang on that was the 70's as well? My mates all had Choppers, but I could go scrambling, whilst all they could do was give decent Backies.

What number I'm I thinking?

This film is a classic and can't be included on a naff list. I remember watching it on a late night viewing, after midnight, after a heavy drinking session. There was only two mates and I and two girls in the whole cinema which is just as well considering the amount of noise we made due to laughing so much. I remember telling everybody I met for the next month about this great film and encourging everybody to go and see it.

I found Walkens performance in the deer hunter pales in comparrison to the Dead Zone, you only saw 2 sides of the character, where as in TDZ he goes through every emotion, joy to fear, fear to panic, panic to sorrow and so on.

I just think that TDZ shows more of his ability and range, The deer hunter was de Niro's movie anyways!

Your are missing on many classic films. I love films from both the late the 70's and 80's and much prefer them to the high tech crap that Hollywood currently curns out to make a quick buck. You just need to see the number of remakes to realise how much better films use to be.

I know it's not 80's but I've just seen a poster for the new Wickerman remake. I understand the hollywood suits have recreated it as taking place in a Canadian village and not a Scotish island. Damn you hollywood, hope it's not as bad as the Italian Job remake.

Do you know must be pissed off. Jill Murphy.

She wrote a heap of books in the 80s about an all girls Witch school. The Worst Witch.

Then that JK Rowling lady comes along and makes billions upon billions ripping it off.

The original though, why didn't it flourish more. I mean it was an all girls wizard school, all girls, all girls, all girls wizard school.

With an underdog, unlikely heroin type character.

And it was set in an all girls school ffs.

How the hell is that not a winning formula.

lost boys and ferris bueler's day off sprung to mind but both have been mentioned so I'll go for herbie goes bananas.

By the way in Deerhunter I think Walken puts de niro in the shade which is some achievement.

Deer Hunter is absolute quality and not to be underestimated. The mighty Walken has had some rare moments in his career, this was certainly one of them. The film itself is utterly unbelieveable of course, but so well acted and stylised that I pretty much don't care that the story makes no sense...

Do you know must be pissed off. Jill Murphy.

She wrote a heap of books in the 80s about an all girls Witch school. The Worst Witch.

Then that JK Rowling lady comes along and makes billions upon billions ripping it off.

I have been saying this for years!

Worst Witch was brilliant, all Rowling did was make it co-ed....

Feel good tear jerker from the 80s - Always starring Richard Dreyfuss & Holly Hunter.

My ex wife loved his film (ironicly!!!), & would blub away, I do seem to remember I had an irritation in my eye, that may have looked like I also shed a tear  :D

BBC2 did a great yearly season of cult films, called 'Moviedrome', that I inevitably looked forward to. Its presenter was none other than "Repo Man"'s director, Alex Cox!

It's a great 'Before he was famous' moment, sort of like Working Girl. He's the ostensibly English villain who's trying to hunt Pryor and Wilder down. (The film certainly predates the recent trend for Hollywood hiring voice coaches, and actors actually being able to get the accents right).

I decided not to mention the Italian Job on the basis that it was made in 1969 so hardly qualified as an 80's film  ::)

I remember being absolutely horrified by the ending, though.

Dawn of the Dead is the best of all George A Romero "the dead" films. Watched the remake last night and as remakes go it pretty good. Sorry to point out it was actually a 70's film, released in 1978. It's interesting how many 70's films have been mentioned in this thread. Personally I think many classic films were made in the late 70's before everything had to be made into a blockbuster.

Can't wait for this weekend to see what Hollywood has done to the Wickerman.

I've previously slated Hollywood for all it's recent cash cow remakes such as the awful Italian Job and Assault on Precinct 13. I also fear the worse for the remake of the Wickerman as this is one of my favourite films of all time. Guess I just keen to see what the have produced.

Now what I am really dreading is the proposed MTV remake of my all time favourite film the Warriors.  :redcard:

I fear the worst whenever I hear the word 'remake', regardless of context.

(Many times bitten, very very shy.)

I also fear the worst when I hear the words 'Cage' and 'Nicolas', so when you put it all together.... ???

Whilst not a huge fan of Mr Cage I did like him in 8mm. I rented 8mm 2 last weekend and was very disappointed. Yet again a low budget sequel created just to cash in on the success of the first film.

The thing that made the original Italian Job so good was the classic car action. However in the Hollywood remake there is only about 5 mins worth of mini action. The remake is awful IMO when you compare the two films against eachother.
