I know a lot of people will look at this (i.e, bolt) and say what the fuck is this guys problem but honest to god, i'm 20 years old and I am a fuckin alky. Apologies for the language but honestly I havre a serious problem with the booze, since I was 15 I have probably not had a week where I have stayed off of booze. Christ I last worked back in april when I failed to appear at the Mad Marty weekend at cincins, beyond that I've played cards and spent winnings on drink, not actually had a job.

FOCUS: I would appreciate any relevant advice guys, anyone who's had a substance abuse or general addiction problems, cheers.

by the way, i know this is usually a subject where you should seek advice of your close personal friends but pretty much every one of my friends drinks a great deal, I think asking for advice of a group of fairly neutral individuals is not the worst move EV wise  :D

Ive had four phone calls in the last hour telling me to meet my mates in the pub that opens at 7am.

If i dont go i'll be in the off license at 8am buying a bottle of brandy cos i ran out at about 4am.

If your single then nothing to worry about, enjoy yourself whilst your still young.

First things first, don't panic.

You may not yet have a serious physical addiction to drink. In fact, you probably don't. It could just be a mental thing which it is more than likely you can still nip in the bud.

The post you just made is a sign that you still feel a sense of responsibility for yourself, those I've seen in the depths of substance abuse all seem have abandoned any such notion while in the depths of their addiction.

The bad news is, if you are an alcoholic, and you want to not be an alcoholic, you can't have another drink ever again. This is quite a scary thought for a young man such as yourself who I'm guessing enjoys the odd sociable tipple. The good news is that you probably arn't yet.

Try to go for a set period of time, say 1 month, without drink. Get your friends to understand what you're doing. If that is unrealistic, make something up. Say you are on seriously heavy anti-biotics or something. The important thing is you don't put any fresh alcohol into your system for a while. If a month is too much, try 2 weeks.

If you don't suffer any physical withdrawl symptoms, you're not an alky. This is great news, as you can go through the rest of your life enjoying booze on social occasions etc. Like bolt says, you're young and alcohol can be enjoyable. So long as you can go without, there's nothing to worry about.

If what you say is true, and that you've not went a week without booze then I'd wager you're allright (for the time being). The proper addicted alky can't go more than 2 days without. They need to keep their body topped up at all times, or feel physical pain.

Mental addiction can quickly lead to a physical one without much warning, so its probably best to do something about this sooner, rather than later.

Ohhh, and get yoursel' a gig before the new pretty 1st year girlies roll into town and snap up all the good uns.

As always Thomas, you're spot on. However, i think it's fair to say I have a physical dependency on alcohol- last time I went close to a week without a cheeky pint, I literally suffered flu-like symptoms- these symptoms evaporated after I had a beer. Also I would find it close to impossible, not just physically but socially, to go without booze for longer than a week, ten days. Certainly I'm not dependent to the point of taking the piss out of my family, breaking into houses etc but I certainly get to the point where I imagine I could rival Daniel Negraneu/Sam Farha  at NL cash games!

Not wanting to sound silly, but it's entirely possible that your flu like symptoms were caused by the flu.

Alcohol numbs the senses, a possible reason for the beer relieving you.

I'd still give it another bosch, and drink plenty orange juice.  :)up

I'm an athsmatic- a recent study found athsmatics produce only half the normal amount of anti-viral bodies (the technical name escapes me) when infected by the cold,flu etc. Therefore any correlation between booze and flulike symptoms is especially potent in my case. Also I would submit that in general I drink more OJ than anyone on this board, I've just tanned 1L while wev'e been chatting  :D

just wanted to give my contribution to your problem. sounds like you have a problem if you THINK you have a problem. the difficulty with drink is that its a central nervous depressant and can make you feel very low after constant drinking. this makes it easier for you to to feel dissappointed in yourself as your self esteem gets a battering.
unlike tank, i dont think you would have to stay off drink for ever. i dont believe that once as 'alky' always an 'alky'. you do have some control over this if you want to learn. it might be an idea for you to talk with someone about 'controlled drinking' this usually requires. as tank says, a bit of time off the booze. then you can work out with a support person whether you are strong enough to control your consumption.
for what its worth, you have a lot going for you. you have a great personality seem to be very warm and humourous. ill send you something that might help

Ive got the computer speakers just about as low as they go, my chairs in recline, the Brandy's flowing and riders on the storm just came on, i cant remember all the things that are pissing me off at the moment so this is about as content as i get ;)

I went 3 months without alcohol during 1st year uni because I was on some potent anti biotics...It is possible to go out socially without alcohol but it is bloody hard, especially if your only a drunken dancer!

LOL... sadly nothing more fun than Roachuatane, (probably not spelt correctly) (which is a drug to cure acne came with lots of scary warnings about depression and suicide (sp?!) trying to kill yourself whilst on them so I made sure I followed the no drinking rule whilst on them!

Let me start, in january i took two co-proxamal for a headache, then last month i took another two and i didnt even have a headache!!!!!

Starting a thread looking for a candid examination of the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption....I think with hindsight starting it at 6am on a saturday morning was no too smart....but highly entertaining.

One of the places I used to work there was a guy who only worked there for the light coating of legitmacy it gave him as his primary income was through the narcotics trade.  Anyway, i was sitting on my break one afternoon and he came in, about to start a late shift. He puts his bag down, opens it and this plastic bag, about the size of those coin bags you get from banks, falls out, almost bursting at the seams with white pills falls out. Casually your man picks it up, says "oh" much like me or you if we knock over a 20 high chip stack, then offers me a couple free for the weekend, saying"they're top notch eccies by the way man". Obviously to assure me that the pills he's offering me FOR FREE are of the highest quality....... :blonde:

I have a history of alcoholism in my close family.  This is part of the reason I don't drink, as there is a gene  passed down to descendants which increases their chances of becoming alcoholics. It is terrible to witness the damaging effects of what alcohol can do to family units from a child's perspective. It stays with you for the rest of your life even after being removed from the problem situation.

If you feel you have a problem Boss, I would talk to someone who knows the subject inside out. There are plenty of support groups out there. At some point in the future you may want kids, it is in your best interests and their interests that you tackle the problem now while you still realise you have a problem. In my experience, the family members mentioned above couldn't see there was a problem and in the end they paid the price both in terms of family and life expectancy.

I once took Immodium when I didn't have diarrhoea. Ran out of toilet paper and couldn't be assed going to the shop.

Used to use newspaper etc, but that would make my bum bleed after a while, so I had sworn myself right off it.

Immodium seemed like a better plan at the time.

Ive got to be honest, i'm concerned about the progress made but last year it was southern comfort, this year its red whine, 5 years time, who knows? we could be sitting here discussing politics over a babysham so.........that would be progress!!

 i still drink cheap ass tennents (scottish lager) and asda vodka (1.5 litres for £15, beautiful), so asda did a box 'o wine for £8, I'm only human!

I'm married to the struggle, the fight for equality and freedom from social exclusion for the working class and that takes up all of my time, some say i'm just dedicated to having a go at others different from myself, and thats also true so i dont really know where i was going with that but having a go at people takes up a lot of my time as well.

they dont let you drink on the streets where i live and it just doesnt feel right drinking a tenents when its not inside of a brown paper bag being passed around 4 blokes and one girl thats half passed out on a park bench, theres a drinking ettiquete involved you know?

Ok, it was under an old pair of Jeans that no longer fit me since I put on about four stone of poker weight. Thankfully the documents themselves are still within a big thick brown thingy they were posted in, so remain free of mushroom growth.

I have moved them, they are now safe on a bookshelf, wedged between a copy of Stuart Macbride's Cold Granite and Nevada Publication's History of the Hoover Dam. Neither of these books I have actually read. (but I looked at the pictures of the Dam one)

quality thread with quality people and a pretty much quality morning on blonde, had been on it all night but was such a laugh on the forum that morning, crazy looking back that that was two years ago, even how mashed i was i remember that while morning(and subsequent entries)!!!

through all the shit that goes on in this gaff(and i'm not taking the piss but even the most ardent of blondes would concede there is a lot) things like this make me remember this gaff changed my whole thinking about the  internet and people who use it and just how small an inconvenience the silly stuff is when you get a thread like this that can make you remember that day two years later.

25-27 is a pretty brutal time to lose two years too very quickly without seemingly achieving much, grinding a living same old same old but you have to tough it out and having this thread as a barometer for what i should have got done in the last two years should be a bit of a wake up but to be honest it isn't, it's enough that it is what it is for me!!!

really is strange, two years ago and because of this thread i remember bopping to the shop up the rd for a bottle of brandy because the shop near me wasn't open!!

genuinely life really was simpler for me then, dont know if that's a good thing or not, individually or as a rule im not sure if anyone could say for certain that a simple life is a good one but my life has changed a lot since then and the simple life seemed to work form me.

kind of scary how quick the two years has passed! As a pro poker poker player ive pretty much done everything wrong you can imagine but ive stayed afloat in 2 1/2+ years which if you saw how i lived my life is a pretty sick achievement in itself, still reflective times like this can be a bit of a downer as what seemed an achievement can quickly present itself as illustration of mediocrity.

I thought I was an alcoholic the other month and took two weeks off booze. I thought about drink every day but didn't have one. When the two weeks were over I got pissed again and enjoyed it. I just had to prove I wasn't addicted. I think it's ok to think about drink in the morning as long as you don't have one. Booze for breakfast is a pretty big turning point I think......

But you gave up knowing that you could drink again in two weeks...

I agree...thats the crux of addiction- it rules your life as its always on your mind- recovering Alcoholics can go 10 years without a drink but its always there in the back of their minds... they are still alcoholics!

Well I say that, but what's really changed is my almost ridiculous belief in the ability and responsibility of the individual.

As an individual, I am capable of consumption of alcohol in large quantities at times; the only side or ill effect I've noticed is a preponderance for posting on poker sites....

Oh yeh and I have worked and studied almost constantly since the OP. I must have been at the bottom when this came up.....

This isn't entirely true imo,I'm not an alcholic,I do like a drink but would say i'm a social drinker, i never drink in the house on my own.However,i had drank for about 10days or summit in a row so decided i would go a week without having a drink,i thought about it everyday but the reason i thought about it was because i had set myself the challenge to do so,the day after i had a drink think it was a monday tho tbf and everyone likes a drink on a shitty monday.I know i could go without having a drink for the rest of my life,but why would i want to ?

I agree, I hardly touch the stuff and wouldn't say anyone needs to spend the rest of their life off it...but if you thought a month ago that you were an alcoholic and then just tried two weeks off it, all the time wanting a drink, then get pissed as soon as your "challenge" has ended..I'd say you were pretty close to being one.
