Red & I fell out at Brighton last weekend.

We somehow got to discussing Papillon. As poor Chili will testify (she was trying to get some zzz's on the back seat of the car while Red & I swapped non-stop yarns for 4 hours) conversation ranged far & wide, and anyway, Papillon's name came up.

I remarked on that remarkable fact about Psapillon's "charger". (You have to have read Papillon to know what this sort of "charger" is....).

Anyway, Papillon recalled a remarkable fact about his charger. Whatever way he inserted it, it always - ALWAYS - turned itself round, so that it came out the opposite way it went in. Red scoffed at this. If we have any learned Papillon readers out there, please put Red right.

It was a clever trick, I'll admit, & it makes my eyes water just thinking about it, but Papillon said it. Deffo.

Everyone who agrees, please Post accordingly. If anyone disagrees, they are wrong. Right?

If memory serves the charger was a tube about the length and size of a thumb.......
I don't see how it is possible for it to turn around especially as it was erm, put in a place that even a strip search couldn't find.
Though whether it actually says so in the book i don't know.

I need to get a good book to read on holiday. I've never heard of this one but it's got some excellent reviews. I liked this one

As I was thankfully asleep when this conversation surfaced, I will say what i would have said then:

"What the hell are you two talking about?"

It's a stonker. Unputdownable. The sequel, "Banco" was pretty neat, too. Non-Fiction, but it's embellished truth, really. If you like Underworld figures, real men with a real mens code of conduct, it's a must read. He was French. His name - Papillon - comes from the fact that he has a tattoo of a moth, & Papillon is French for moth.

There is a breed of dog called a Papillon, because it's ears look like a butterfly. Look it up.

bottom person here - not possible to turn around items that size without stretching bowel walls to such an extent they could tear...haven't read book but would think that item had an even smaller thing inside that turned around and made it go other way (backwards) rather than actually turn around? Bit like a train with two engines, one on each end.

The rumour about richard gere and the hamsters is also very unlikely, for the same reason.  :blonde:

The argument was not whether it's possible, it's whether Papillon said, in the book, that it happened. He did.

I enjoyed the read, but boy does that guy big himself up or what!!!!  Fascinating story, but do you really believe it all?  I haven't researched it much so maybe it is supported, but with a fresh pair of eyes I thought the guy was a bit narcissistic.  Good fun book though.... 

And to answer the question... I'm not too sure I believe it's possible... but I have an appointment with a gastroenterologist soon so I'll ask!

One of my favourite books, about 10 years since i read it last but it rings a bell. I think tikay maybe right.

Red on the other hand is correct when he says pappillon means butterfly. The French for Moth is Mite.

When the "coconut-raft" escape from the Island to Georgetown took place, & his mate drowned on the mud-flats, Red thinks it was just Papillon that set off, alone. Tell him, please.

One of my all time favourite books and although I saw the film it could never compare to the perfection that is one's own imagination...........funny how the oddest facts stick out of course particularly that of the reversal of the days entries......remember wincing at this at the time.

So, settle some of the arguments we had.

In the book it stated quite clearly that the charges reversed.
The second one I am not sure but have every intention of checking out this evening. Gut instinct (and lets be honest there is no shortage in that dept.) is that Tikay is right again

Much as I hate to bump old threads I need to give due credit to RED and Tikay for mentioning this book, otherwise I'd never have discovered it.

As it happened, Sophie and I were staying at her parents over Christmas and I spotted a copy of it, bought in 1973 with nicely browned pages, and asked Sophie's mum if I could borrow it.  It stayed unopened until last week but then, as Tikay said, it became impossible to put down for too long almost as soon as I started it.  Fascinating read, regardless of how much the truth was embellished.

Like an idiot I didn't also borrow the copy of Banco at the time so I'll need to head back for that.

Oh, and in answer to the second argument in this thread (the first having been resolved at the time) he did NOT set off alone on the raft.  Two of them escaped at the same time, although they had separate rafts and they were several hundred yards away from each other for most of the time they drifted.

I'm now downloading the movie so that I can complain about it not being as good as the book!

Seriously, it's one of the best books I've ever read, & I've read thousands. I only read non-fiction, & to be fair, it's really "embellished" non-fiction, but I love the characters in it, the underworld "feel", & the dignity of true, proper, criminals. Police they don't need, they sort themselves out, & their code of honour is splendid.

So the rumor about Richard Gere and Thomas the Tank is probably true?
