Title: out of my depth?
Post by: the winner on September 21, 2006, 04:43:52 PM
i considered myself a very good player and managed to build a decent sized (or so i thought) bankroll playing  0.10-0.25 blinds at ladbrokes.i decided to move up the levels and lost it all in two hands on the $5-$10 blinds.i pushed all in on my second hand with  6c 6d hoping for a quick double up and got called by the big stack with  Kh Ks.i watch a lot of poker on television and see people go all in almost every other hand!did i play really bad or was i unlucky?after losing all $220 of my bankroll i felt physically sick and it took me a week before i could face playing again.anyone have any advice what levels i should be playing or on how to improve my poker skills?
many thanks in advance and thanks for reading my ;first; post!hello to all you blondites and i look forward to contributing to the forum.

If you are serious and this is not a windup then my advice is -

Don't gamble your entire bankroll on a pair of sixes.

i think youre biggest mistake was moving up to $5 / $10 with just 22 big blinds

i suppose it is quite a jump but i had been clenaing up at the lower levels and thought i was good enough to move up.a couple of double ups and i would have had a massive bank roll.how much would you suggest i have to play them blind levels?

I don't really know what advice you are looking for. Harrington on Hold'em is probably a good starting point if you want to learn how to play. You might want to go back to the levels you are used to playing, build up your bankroll and go up the levels more slowly.

Gambling your entire bankroll on any hand is pretty bad but suicidal with pocket sixes that if called is going to be a coin flip at best. You were closer to having a 10% chance when you ran into the kings.

wow that's one hell of a leap up in levels mate.  I'm doing ok at 25c/50c and am wondering about moving up to 50c/$1!  the $5/$10 would kill me, that's high roller level almost.

My only advise, move up 1 level at a time, the boys at those levels really know what they are doing and will take you to the cleaners.

20k minimum, 20 buyins of 100 big blinds. I'd want more.

The poker you see on TV is tournament poker. The stacks relative to the blinds are much smaller and a much more aggressive strategy is required. They edit out all the 'boring' bits and what you see is like watching 'Goals on Sunday' rather than the full match. It bears very lttle relation to playing a cash game on the internet.

The best way to learn poker is to stick to the small games and build up gradually and read lots of books.

By massive do you mean nearly one buyin?

i think all the tv i had been watching may have had an influence.i have seen people push all in with jack 3!i did start off at low limits and thought i had a decent bank roll.i guess i was wrong and need to review my game.

Another one stolen from another thread:-

what is it with people on here at the moment?

this forum used to be a good place for discussion on a varied number of topics.always friendly and constructive.

but imo its changing.

now its getting to the point that if you dont agree or contradict  the original poster they abuse your post and views.

I really don't mind people attempting humour where i'm concerned but i think they should at least be familiar with me in some (any) way.

Mr Winner

bankroll management is an importnat part in poker

with a bankroll of only just above $200 you shouldnt be attempting to play much above 10c/20c

when you get to about 500$ you can try a 25/50c game but you need to keep playing small to be able to move up

if you attempt to play above your bankroll you can as shown here go broke very easy

my guess is that mr winner and mr inform both had too much drink while on shift and thought they would ask some newbie questions when really they are not new to poker or gambling

Mr Winner , to answer your question.

Yes , you were way way way out of your depth.

fair enough you were doing well at the lower stakes , .10c / .25c is beginner stakes.

when you build your bankroll to $300 step up to .15c / .30c and so on and so on .

at 5$ / $10 stakes you would need a bankroll of $10,000 , you only had $200 so really should be sticking at .10c / .25c

 at that stage.

you say you wanted a quck double up , by betting $200 with 66 you will only win $15 if everyone folds.

if you are called , you will be lucky to have %50 chance of winning the hand.

as you seen , you were in fact about %20 to win the hand.

so youve risked all your money as 4 to 1 underdog , even at 10/25c you would be playing badly to push $25 with 66

my advice would be to go back to 10/25c and grind it out until you build up your roll again to at least $300

then take a small step up to 15/30c then see where you go from there , then if u get to $500 step up to 25/50c stakes

above all , dont play the way you see on tournament final tables on tv.

they guys are mostly top professionals , they have the  level of skill to carry out these plays

and one thing is certain , none of them would ever put all their money in with 66 in a cash game.

im not saying your not a skillful player , but you need to start off at low stakes and build your way up mate.

without bricks , there wouldnt be buildings.

 at 5$ / $10 stakes you would need a bankroll of $10,000

At least 30k i would say,

i had no idea i would need such a big bankroll!$30,000 seems a huge amount.i guess i had better go back to the lower limits and start over.thanks to everyone who posted something constructive. :respect:
