Title: Last nights late night poker ace.
Post by: Newmanseye on October 03, 2006, 06:04:40 PM
I saw Luke patten on this lastnight, now as i understand he is a pro player, so why was he playing in an amateur tourney?

I tuned in, but didn't like the look of it and went and read abit of my poker book instead.  I prefer shows like high stakes poker and WPT/EPT.

Depends on the definition of "pro player"

I simply meant if he has other work interests outside of poker, he may not be described as a professional by many.

makes a mockery of the "amature" tournament when they allow pro's or semi pros to run with a soft field.

Luke runs his own successful magazine publishing business. Just happens to be good at poker as well!

He is not a professional player then.  He is just good at poker, very good by all accounts.

I think somebody should try and define what a "pro" is and then they could maybe run tournaments where pros aren't allowed to enter giving the amatuers more of a chance ;)

I'm sure many players would define themselves as "professional".

Luke has won in excess of £150,000 this year.  If his business is going well then it's possible he has taken that much or more in salary.  What if he pays himself £100,000 a month, is he still a professional poker player?

As I said in my first post on this thread, it depends on your definition.  Your definition, Newmanseye, is clearly based on money won.  That may or may not be correct.

I absolutely agree, Russ.  I don't think it'll ever occur, as different organisations will have different opinions.

"Late Night Poker Ace is a competion to find the best amateurs players in the UK." - Taken from ch4 website, tbh winning big events at major casinos in England strikes me as utter bollocks that hes in this. Maybe thats why no one watches it.

Winning main events makes you a professional?

I would love to know what Luke himself thinks.

There is no such thing as amateur status in poker. Just people who can make it pay and people who would like to. It is a gambling game with an element of skill not a sport. Everyone involved is trying to win as much money as possible out of it.

The term amateur is (mis) used pretty loosely by LNPA to give the tourney a sporting image when we all know such TV tourneys especially are nearly all down to luck.
