Title: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: Newmanseye on October 03, 2006, 06:04:40 PM I saw Luke patten on this lastnight, now as i understand he is a pro player, so why was he playing in an amateur tourney?
Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: Sark79 on October 03, 2006, 06:13:21 PM I tuned in, but didn't like the look of it and went and read abit of my poker book instead. I prefer shows like high stakes poker and WPT/EPT.
Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: MrMoves on October 03, 2006, 06:18:07 PM Depends on the definition of "pro player"

Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: ripple11 on October 03, 2006, 06:30:00 PM I heard that Luke runs his own buisness and plays when he can.....so "semi pro" !?? Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: MrMoves on October 03, 2006, 06:49:36 PM I simply meant if he has other work interests outside of poker, he may not be described as a professional by many.

Post by: Newmanseye on October 03, 2006, 07:04:40 PM makes a mockery of the "amature" tournament when they allow pro's or semi pros to run with a soft field.
Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: SuffolkPunch on October 03, 2006, 07:10:26 PM Luke runs his own successful magazine publishing business. Just happens to be good at poker as well!
Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: mikkyT on October 03, 2006, 07:14:26 PM Aye a saw that, probably classing himself as semi pro.

Just happens to be good at poker as well! He is not a professional player then. He is just good at poker, very good by all accounts. Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: ariston on October 03, 2006, 08:01:31 PM I think somebody should try and define what a "pro" is and then they could maybe run tournaments where pros aren't allowed to enter giving the amatuers more of a chance ;)

Just happens to be good at poker as well! o, as is TDave Colclough has several business ventures yet he is still a pro as is Tikay and a few other pros on the circuit I'm sure many players would define themselves as "professional". Luke has won in excess of £150,000 this year. If his business is going well then it's possible he has taken that much or more in salary. What if he pays himself £100,000 a month, is he still a professional poker player? As I said in my first post on this thread, it depends on your definition. Your definition, Newmanseye, is clearly based on money won. That may or may not be correct. Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. I don't think it'll ever occur, as different organisations will have different opinions. Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: Acidmouse on October 03, 2006, 09:35:04 PM "Late Night Poker Ace is a competion to find the best amateurs players in the UK." - Taken from ch4 website, tbh winning big events at major casinos in England strikes me as utter bollocks that hes in this. Maybe thats why no one watches it.

I would love to know what Luke himself thinks. Title: Re: Last nights late night poker ace. Post by: AceofWands on October 04, 2006, 01:11:35 AM There is no such thing as amateur status in poker. Just people who can make it pay and people who would like to. It is a gambling game with an element of skill not a sport. Everyone involved is trying to win as much money as possible out of it.
The term amateur is (mis) used pretty loosely by LNPA to give the tourney a sporting image when we all know such TV tourneys especially are nearly all down to luck. Ac |
