Title: Carling Cup
Post by: Mr F on October 26, 2006, 09:40:57 AM
Well the Chairboys have made it through to the next round of the Carling Cup.  Having beaten three teams from higher divisions so far (Swansea, Fulham, Doncaster) we now face Notts County away.

They have had a decent run so far, beating Palace Middlesborough and Southampton and are currently two points behind us in fifth having beaten us already at their place this season.

My question is this, as a lower league side in the cups, would you rather face a side closer to your level therefore giving you a better chance of getting through (in theory) or a more glamourous side to rake the money in?

rake the money in every time.  Also the "better chance of getting through" isn't always the case as the top teams will probably field weaker sides (IOW not their top players) and the teams close to you in the league probably won't.
If you manage to knock out one of the premiership teams you will also geta  lot of good press and it makes more people come and see the game again..or even the telly showing your next game live.

Ordinarily I'd like the bigger club draw but with the Carling Cup nowadays this will generally mean a team of reserves so the appeal is lost.  Potentially it gives you a better chance of causing an upset but, as with Arsenal the other night, the team of reserves is generally good enough to beat the top Championship teams.

So I say give us the easier draw in the hope that we play a full strength 'big team' in the Final!

Sheriff

PS: It also annoys me that we (Barnsley) descended to fielding a reserve team when we played MK Dons in the last round.  FFS we were in the same division as them last season.  Naturally we lost, thus denying the fans of any prospect of a 'glamour tie'.

Went to Leicester/Villa the other night...a complete stormer. The legend that is MON got a great reception and we equalised twice and almost took them to penalties

As to the question....I'd take winnable ties all the way...teams like Leicester, Tranmere have reached finals of this and if you get a long way in it you a) rake in the money anyway and b)give long suffering fans something to get up for

I know its derided as mickey mouse and some big clubs don't take it too seriously, but tell that to sides not in Europe for whom it represents their best chance of silverware.

As a supporter of one of the five english teams who have never reached the quarter finals of the league cup i'll take playing lower league opposition every day of the week.

BRING ON CHESTERFIELD!!  :D

you mean the spanking by Southend* didn't?

* = insert applicable team after every game(Luton/Preston/Hull/Bongor Regis Blind Institute XI)

Yes, erm, well Southend beat us but all their goals were gimmies and mistake by us, they didnt dominate the match unlike the other games we got truly spanked.

as an arsenal fan, i hate the carling cup. i wish it was scrapped the only good thing about it is we can see some of our kids coming through like fabregas, eboue, senderos over the years, but that is the only plus side to it but we even get moaned at then, arsenal dont take it seriously, even their reserve side is full of foreigners etc etc.A mate of mine is a west brom fan and went the other night and said that even our 2nd team play great football, better than most but we still get bad press about it.

i have a season ticket at arsenal and go home and away but Ive only been to 1 CC match in 7 seasons, thats how important it is to me. we have drawn everton in the next round, away , and i think if they field their 1st team we will be out.

i think Matt made a post saying that for teams that are not in Europe it is a competition that they are desperate to win and i think it is those clubs that keep this cup going, for that when arsenal get knocked out to everton i will support Charlton in this years league cup.

I know an Arsenal season ticket holder and I'm sure he said that for his 700 quid he gets all home PL, FA cup and CL games... but not carling cup! If this is right it is absolutely crazy. I have no issue with the big teams playing lesser teams... the cup provides a spot in europe and its the only way Newcastle with make europe for next year!

The cup won't be taken more seriously unless it attracts more crowds (through some sort of cricket 20/20 culture) or have more prize money throguth sponsorship.

Not that it matters, Watford have just equalised and we've scored our goal for the night.

Arsenal season tickets holders used to get something like 7 (maybe 10) cup games included in the ticket, regardless on which order they fell in.  If the CL games came first you got them, if it was FA Cup, then that.

This is about 7 years ago though.

rooky this is absolutley right. we get all games aprt from the league cup. there are 2 reasons behind this 1 is we dont play a 1st team in it and the other is that the club reduces ticket prices for league cup games by about 25%.

Arsenal season tickets holders used to get something like 7 (maybe 10) cup games included in the ticket, regardless on which order they fell in.  If the CL games came first you got them, if it was FA Cup, then that.

thatis true we get the 1st 7 cup ties at home included in the price excluding league cup ties although you are right they were included up until about 7 years ago. As soon as they stopped including it i stopped going. i used to pray we got drawn away lol.

Thanks for the info Dan. I can't think of a way of stating why I think it should include the carling cup, even with those reasons... but I do!!

The lad I know with the season ticket is more of a friend of a friend and I only see them when I'm drunk in islington! It may of been more than 700 but that figure stuck in my mind for some reason!

I have to admit i was most disappointed when i heard that the Liverpool vs Arsenal game had been abandoned that Sky weren't going to switch games and cover the Charlton vs Wycombe as i thought that this would be the only chance i get to see them win a game all season.

Now i'm glad they showed live spanish football instead!!

Championship here we come.................

Tell me about it!!  I'm still in Swansea, so I made a rare trip to the pub (yes rare, I've changed y'know!) just to see the scores coming through during the other game only to find out that they were playiong spanish football instead was totally gutted and went home to listen to five live instead.

Anybody got any idea why they didn't show the other game?  You  lot are a lot more clued up on these things than me, surely they would have had cameras there for the highlights??

It's only 3 days after the FA Cup game too.  Liverpool will probably put decent sides out for both where as Arsenal will have the first team for the FA Cup and then the kids for the Carling Cup, all fresh and ready to go.

I dont know if Liverpool will go with a strong team now that it has been rescheduled.

Probably fringers like Crouch, Fowler, Garcia, Agger etc.

I'm not going to say anything like we're gonna turn over whoever we get, but i don't think it's going to be a walk in the park for whoever we do eventually face.

But I would love it if we got Spurs and turned them over!!

Of course we will.  to be honest I'm just happy we've got as far as we have.  i know all  the premiership team fans laugh at this competion, but we've done well to get this far.  We should be glad to have got to the semi's.

And we beat the mighty stockport today....
