Oh and a quick warning for anyone who feels uncomfortable for others. I was sat next to my Jewish flat mate who wasn't laughing at much of the film - those who have seen the film will understand why. I was totally uncomfortable for many parts. He eventually worked out that it was actually a double back onto Americans for their racist views (Cohen has used this against his own religion many times over and works quite well.).

My son has bombarded me with clips from this and to be honest its not really my kinda humour.

To take the p*ss out off a country...any country and make them all out the same to me is just wrong.

The Scots are not tight, the Welsh dont sh*g sheep and the Irish are not thick. There will obviously be a few that will fit the bill but it annoys me BIG time that we are all put in "groups" based on the bases of where we are born!!

Lets see if Ali G ever has the balls to visit Kazakhstan in the near future.

It would not surprise me if he ends up face down in the Thames.

I wonder how many men they had to ask before they found 1 who admitted to treating his horses better than his wife...probably not that many but I have a feeling that might be worldwide.

Gotta say though...any man who has the balls to go onto a public beach in that costume .....RESPECT!!!

I'm going to see the film soon. I did watch some Borat on TV recently and I noticed two different reactions from the people he meets.
The first is a kind of embarressment where people are uncomfortable disagreeing with Borats racism, homophobia or anti-semitism, although, strangely they seem more likely to challenge his sexism.
"Letting a woman vote is like letting a monkey fly a plane, very dangerous"

The second, more disturbing response is when you see someones face light up when they think they've found a fellow racist they can speak freely with.
He was being shown round a private housing estate with a view to buy and he tells the estate agent his wife is uncomfortable around 'the chocolate faces and asks if they're allowed in. The guy said he couldn't gaurantee it but if they were, they'd be very well off and wouldn't act like normal chocolate faces.
Also if anyone has ever seen the country and western open mic night where the rednecks are happily joining in with "throw the Jew down the well" it's scarey how much fun they're having. Cohen is a very brave man. I don't really laugh at Borat. I kind of make one gasp/laugh sound then spend the rest of the skit mumbling "oh my..wow...unbelievable..."

I don't think Cohen is saying "All Americans are racist" I just think he's making it obvious to the rest of the world that many are and we rarely get to see that side of the US.

yes i saw it. but jonathon was not brave enough to return the favour..lol

he is very funny but i wouldnt like it if he was taking the piss out of Scotland like that.

i think he would have the balls to go to Kazakhstan because hes a cheeky fecker

I don't think he really takes a piss out of Kazakhstan per se, although his choice of the country could be treated as ignorance in itself.  The very point is that not many people know much about the country, anyone who has beed there will know that Borat does not even look like Kazakh, as most population comes from old Persian and then Mongol Empire.  Also the fact that he talks in a mixture of russian, polish and some other gibberish is another give away.

So it is in a way a satire on ignorance of American people towards other countries and cultures.
I have not seen the film, just saw some extracts and old Borat's episodes.

Quite simply one of the funniest movies ever made. Womble did his back in laughing so much he pulled a muscle and he is the stereotypical tory boy guardian reader. Anyone who classes this film as racist doesn't have a sense of humour.

indeed.

I know several people who complained about this movie and for some reason it's the PC brigade gone mad.. It' s always the "he shouldn't make fun of Kazachstan because Kazachstan isn't that way and he's not being nice to them" brigade that ticks me off.

The reason he went with Kazachstan is because it is a nation everyone has heard of but noone knows anything about (when's the last time you went there on holiday?). The americans could therefore be convinced that he actually is a foreigner and not someone taking the piss out of them.

I also don't see anything wrong with the jokes he makes..they are afterall jokes that go to point out the stupidity of people. It's not that Americans are all racist...that's not his point. some of his jokes are seriously funny and some others the reaction of the people he puts his statements to make you cringe.
If you made a similar movie in the UK you'd find the same sort of people and the same reactions, he not taking cheap shots at Americans, there are stupid people everywhere (and they are ussually the people that complain too much about jokes being racist) And his interview/talk with the feminists were off the wall funny. Yes he was very offensive but it also goes to show just how stupid the people who are VERY pc ussually are. ""Letting a woman vote is like letting a monkey fly a plane, very dangerous" is a cracker the way he says it and the way the feminists respond to it.

The daily show with John stewart does the same sort of stuff in their interviews (just less blatantly racist)

Let's be honest...Borat has probably done more for Kazachstans tourism board then they have ever done for themselves. so the Kazachs can't really complain too much. Anyone who really believes Kazachstan is a country where every village has a "very very naughty" village rapist and wher they have a ranking of prostitutes is a poster child of post natal abortion IMO.

Blah..the movie is very funny...and that's the be all and end all with this one.

People believe in all sort of rubbish....so not so sure some of the americans and english for that matter will watch this film with the knowledge of the meta-language.  What happened to Chris Morris excellent spoofs on news......... they were not taken as satire by many who claim to be intelligent.  Sad but true- masses are usually brainwashed and one can not underestimate their stupidity.

I hope you are no reffering to me as brigade I just pointed out that picking any country which not many people know about and creating a character has its problems, He does not make a fun out of Kazakhstan- he makes a fun of ignorant idiots who will believe in any rubbish if it is sold to them in a certain way.

I thought it was brilliant, laughed pretty much the whole way through.

I have to disagree about the impending Bruno film though, I do find him funny but not sure he can keep interest for 1.5 hours.

I found this film hilariously funny in places but more often than not it was the type of cringworthy humour where you know what is coming and you really don't want to see it, but you just cant help but watch - in stitches.

Lungbusting stuff.

Borat did the UK in his Ali G series long before he went to america.
When he spent the day with the toffs on some yearly boating thing, I nearly creased myself laughing.
He created him because everyone in the UK knew Ali G by that point so he couldn't get anyone with him any more.
Then he saw fresh blood in the US and did a series there.

One thing I have always found about people he does is that his character is almost like a reflection for their own characters to be shown.
So decent people, even though getting sent up, can come across as good people. While arseholes are given all the rope they need to hang themselves.
