Title: Slightly Annoying
Post by: MrsLime on January 12, 2007, 10:28:37 PM

I pretty much don't post here anymore, but I still occasionally read some threads.  One relatively small thing that has slightly annoyed me from the start, is that some posters elect to ALWAYS use a non-default font colour.  We can clearly see who wrote each message, as their name (and avatar, if present) are shown to the left of their post.  Why do these individuals think that their message is so much more important than those of other members that it warrants highlighting?  Imagine if every member was so undignified as to have his/her own garish custom font setting!  I do not understand the advantage or point of changing this setting.  If it is allowed at all, coloured text should be reserved for Admin or Mods making official announcements.  The complementary colour scheme of the forum was carefully chosen (and with much heated debating at the time, if I recall correctly) and I feel that gaudy user-selected colour combinations undermine that effort.  Do other members of the board agree/disagree?

i just find it amazing that the colout of text would get to you so much. i would say we are all important enought to have red of green ect its just that some of us have more imagination and put a little more effort to brightening up the site.

Title: Re: Slightly Annoying
Post by: Ginger on January 12, 2007, 10:53:45 PM
Well, as I am the ONLY poster on blonde that consistently uses a non default font colour, I assume this thread is directed at me.

I have never implied or feel that my posts are more important than any other posters, and find it laughable that you would assume such a thing, it shows just how little you can know about a person by simply judging them on font colour.  I do not expect you to understand why I change the colour as I have no real reason why I do it, I like the colour, I choose to post in the colour and it's as simple as that.

The options are available for any person to use if they so wish, some people post pics in their sig line which I actually find annoying. But, the difference is I know it's each to their own and wouldn't dream of trying to make assumptions about a persons character based on such a ridiculous thing.

What harm is it doing?

If she wants to post in a non-default colour, let her...the option is obviously there for a reason.

Amazingly, I was just experimenting with changing the size of the text so that I don't have to squint to read it. Yours was the first thread I opened, only to be confronted by inch high, bright yellow letters with a red border, I wondered wtf I had done.

That aside, I have no problem with coloured text. Vive la difference!

Title: Re: Slightly Annoying
Post by: MrsLime on January 12, 2007, 11:46:04 PM

First of all: woah, please hold your horses (Norse or otherwise).  I am not judging anyone's personality or character here.  Remember I am not commenting on the content of anyone's posts.  But, on a page with, say, a dozen replies, one post that is a different colour from the rest will naturally stand out.  I am wondering why any person would want to make their post stand out.  My personal view is that I find mildly annoying those posts that do not warrant highlighting but nevertheless are highlighted.  This is, of course, a subjective view.  Objectively, however, a case could be made that this practice reduces the effectiveness of posts that do actually warrant highlighting.

Again, just to clarify, it is not the content of these posts that is annoying, neither is it the person that wrote them; it is merely the way they are being presented.

Regarding the spelling jibe, perhaps you have me confused with someone else?  Please quote just ONE example of when I have corrected someone's spelling!

Quite frankly MrsLime I think you stand pretty much alone on this issue. You are the first person in 18 months to mention that they find my posts in any way offensive, annoying or irritating. I do not believe they stand out as much as you believe they do, I feel it is more the case that you feel you have found something to pick at so will run with it if you can.

I will not change the purple, it's as much of my identity on blonde as my name or my sig line, and trying to make a point by using bright red highlight over yellow font simply looks foolish.

By the way "Imagine if every member was so undignified as to have....." that to me is making a judgement.

Title: Re: Slightly Annoying

One relatively small thing that has slightly annoyed me from the start, is that some posters elect to ALWAYS use a non-default font colour.

By some, you mean one. Ginger is the only person on the forum to consistantly use another font colour in all her posts as you describe. As such, some people would look upon this as a personal attack you are making.

I'm sure that's not what is going on, as you say, you only read here occasionly, so may have seen one person post in this manner, and you assume it's more than that.

Quote

Why do these individuals think that their message is so much more important than those of other members that it warrants highlighting?

How can you make such assumptions to her motives for posting in purple. A possible case of judging people by your own standards? The world is not so clear cut, and not everybody thinks like you.

Quote

If it is allowed at all, coloured text should be reserved for Admin or Mods making official announcements.

They have the facility to sticky posts, send pm's on en masse, e-mail etc. They don't have much trouble getting the word out.

Quote

The complementary colour scheme of the forum was carefully chosen (and with much heated debating at the time, if I recall correctly) and I feel that gaudy user-selected colour combinations undermine that effort.

Dangerous precedent, picking on the aesthetic integrety responsibility of each poster.

The next step is to pick on spelling,,,,,, then we start lambasting a,,,,, poster such as sofa_king for his individuality

Before long, we're in the Third Reich forum.

......BOTHERED

Seriously, i think Jane(ginger) is the only member of the forum who consistently uses a different coloured font to the default and she (usually :) )makes intelligent and constructive posts which far outweigh any minor annoyance a minority of the forum users may feel at her purple (i think???) expressions.

A quote from Love/Hate might be apt here.

We can be brothers and wear our different colours too."

I used to post on a few MSN groups when I was younger and most people would change the colour/font/size (mine was Comic Sans, Size 5, usually bright pink) So I've never had a problem with Ginger using purple text. I use the quick reply option so changing the colour would be too much hassle for me each time I post.

Stop bloody moaning, that's all you ever seem to do.

For me it depends on the colour. Ginger's choice of colour doesn't irritate me, but I imagine some of the other choices available would. Fortunately, I don't think many people use anything but the default.

Like Darius i'm colour blind so ......

......BOTHERED

Seriously, i think Jane(ginger) is the only member of the forum who consistently uses a different coloured font to the default and she (usually :) )makes intelligent and constructive posts which far outweigh any minor annoyance a minority of the forum users may feel at her purple (i think???) expressions.

A quote from Love/Hate might be apt here.

"Don't F*** with me and i won't f*** with you,
We can be brothers and wear our different colours too."

Shakespeare / Marlowe/ Wittgenstein it ain't but the message is universal.

you on the pull?

Using Love/Hate and darius lyrics?

Gimme some credit man!

By the way that bothered above is supposed to be beige. It doesn't look beige to me, looks white. All this colour malarky confuses me. My mates find it very amusing when we're playing snooker to tell me the brown ball is the red so I pot it. Then they fall about laughing claiming their four points. Bastards.

If someone did post consistantly in this non-nneutral colour with the red and orange glow thing going on, rather than draw attention to their posts, it would have the opposite afffect.

I would sooner skip over their posts entirely than strain my eyes.

Mrs Lime is just misunderstood ::)

I met Mrs Lime in person. He was polite, unassuming, softly spoken, and totally non-confrontational. I had a problem with my computer and he let his dinner go cold while he spent two hours helping me to sort it. During that time, he spoke very little, when he did he didn't make eye contact and his voice was just loud enough to be audible.

I have a habit, developed over years people watching and dealing with total strangers, of catagorising people quickly, sometimes I'm wrong, but not often.

I had Mrs Lime down as one of life's good guys. Shy and retiring, helpful and accommodating. Obviously blessed with a massive intellect, he seemed secure in the knowledge that he was mentally superior to most of the people he came into contact with, and happy to use his abilities to assist those less capable without ever coming across as being arrogant or condescending.

Then I saw the version of Mrs Lime that you all know, the online version. Rude, caustic, outspoken, troublesome and vulgar. He seems to delight in upsetting people. Bulling them into submission by beating them over the head with his intelligence and his vocabulary.

I know it shouldn't really matter, and perhaps I've spoken out of turn here, I'm just as guilty of rising to his bait as everyone else. Somehow though, the whole thing saddens me.

It's not his fault, he's been locked in his house for weeks now with them funny squirrel books. His brain is probably dribbling out of his ears and nose on to his computer and hitting the keys in an arsey manner. It's not really him writing at all.

My view after knowing, and spending time, with MrsLime over the past several months:

MrsLime is a nice guy.

He has an uncontrollably obsessive character in which he views the world in a logical way. If something goes against the logic of that world (eg. using colour text when black text is easier to read) then he feels a compulsion to say so. He doesn't mean it in a nasty way and may sound abrupt at times, but that's the way he is. He is direct and to the point and clearly not a fan of decorating his posts with smilies in order to express himself. I don't think we should hold this against him, but rather be more udnerstanding of why he says what he does. As RED-DOG said himself, in person, John is a perfectly harmless human being who wouldnt say boo to a goose, he's a top chap. Unfortunately, when it comes to writing in text, not everyone has the ability to convey themselves in a manner that is deemed acceptable by everyone else.

Of course, there's no reason why people can't object to his posts and the manner in which he makes his comments, but what I don't like is this pack of wolves mentality in which people feel the need to group together to either mock or ambush with underhand insults and, quite frankly, flames, to insult the person they disagree with. In that sense, if you believe MrsLime has been derrogatory to anyone, then anyone who has responded in a similar manner is just as bad.

Bottom line. Don't judge someone until you've met them. However he comes across online, he's a decent human being.

Like RED-DOG, this thread has has also saddened me.

MrsLime has a good position in the Bait a Mod league table. i have been informed by a mole in the Mod's room that he also has a high position in the Difficult Posters League.

it will be interesting at the end of the season when the tables are released to the general public just how similar the two league tables are.

Don't give up though folks. there is plenty of time before the season ends to get into that coveted top position. As an added bonus all official warnings received this week will get DOUBLE POINTS! Also TRIPLE BONUS POINTS for anyone who can get RED DOG growling again. He is being much too reasonable so far this year.

Sarcy comments from Colchester kev have been taken off the bonus scheme as almost everyone on Blonde has received one of these by now.

All PM's sent by tikay saying pleeeeeeease STFU about that subject will continue to receive 10xBONUS POINTS for the remainder of the season.

Good Luck and keep up the good work folks

Best wishes

Here's my two cents (I have a lot of cents, my mum says, but not the common kind):

General discussion threads are often started on totally off topic (and frankly, off the wall) subjects just for a bit of colour.

I doubt very highly that MrsLime really cares whether anyone posts in purple, gold, or redwhiteandblue.  But it has made for an (in my opinion) highly amusing Random Thread.  For which we should give thanks.  I also heard a rumour that he comes from a two-dimensional black-and-white planet called Rix-On-8.

You may carry on now.

Granted, they do attract a lot of attention, and some people even find them amusing, but that would also be true of a public hanging, and like a public hanging, the amusement is at someone else's expense.

If I started a thread saying that I found people's Pokerstars avatars of cats creepy and wrong whilst simultaneously changing my picture on blonde to a big fat kitten (see the parallel between the 'complaint' and the ridiculous parodic font he put it in), I am sure lots of people who have these would find something somewhere to take offense in this.  Honestly, grow some rhino-skin, poker players.

Whilst I somewhat agree and understand what you are saying Jen, your post wasn't directed at a single player.... whereas MrsLimes post was. You won't find me hiding behind the sofa over this thread, as I couldn't care less what someone's opinions are on a font colour.  But, making assumptions about me based on such a trivial thing and then airing those 'judgements' on a forum is not on.

Yes, and by the same token, If I dissagreed with someone other than those you share a house with, I'm sure you wouldn't feel the need to interupt what you were doing in order to defend them.

I have just come across this thread and am wondering how this got so angry.

When I read Mrs Limes post I thought it was tongue in cheek and didn't at any time think it was directed at Ginger - it hadn't occured to me that Ginger was the only one posting in colour - it just wasn't important to me. In fact I was thinking what a waste of time a poll was and was going to click out of the thread when I realised it was all going awol.

Unless there is history to this that I don't know about I think this may have become a massive understanding - if there is history to this then I apologise for sticking my nose in - I just didnt read this as an acusatory or bullying post.

If anything I think Mrs Lime enjoys the controvesy his post has caused and having lit the touch paper retires and watches the fireworks. Not sure if there is any malice in the original post though.

What's wrong with pointing out someones spelling mistakes anyway?
The lobby on Tribeca is the place to do it!
People who do not know whether to use lose/loose or loser/looser (a classic example and a particular bugbear of mine) in a conversation may find that being politely informed of their indiscretion can indeed be useful, although they may not realise it at the time and often forget to thank me because they are too busy showing me their repertoire of mis-spelled anglo-saxon adjectives.
While I'm at it, it's  spelled TRIBECA, not any permutation of these letters and a few more added for good measure, a few of the posters on this forum seem unable to understand this including some of the more erudite ones.

If done by PM, fine, in public, we prefer not. Not all of us spell well, & if we are constantly corrected in public, it is likely to deter those less able to spell well from Posting. Folks can be very cruel, you know.

actually I have now changed my mind about font colours

ginger was right all along

it is great fun, and in fact now (in my eyes at least) everyone who posts in 'boring black' comes across as conforming and, dare i say it, monotonous

i almost fall asleep when reading some of the replies in this thread

we are all individuals and should not rely on 'mother blonde' to provide us with a default identity

i have also decided to eschew capital letters and full stops as an expression of my uniqueness

i now feel aglow with emancipation

thank you ginger for leading the way, you are a wonderful and enlightening person

If it's a picture that is on another site somewhere, it's dead easy.

Find the picture you want.  Right click on and select properties. Copy the URL for the image.

Then in the post editor click on the (http://blondepoker.com/forum/Themes/blonde2/images/bbc/img.gif) button.

That will put [img] [/img] tags round it.

As it happens snop you have a priveledged (sp? lime?) position on blonde and as such should be lambasting this sort of thing and not defending it.
He has on numerous occasions chosen (yes chosen) to be deliberatley (sp? lime?) abusive and condascending (sp? lime?) to all who populate this forum, this is wrong and away from the protection of the keyboard his personality/attitude is irrelevant.
If you wanna throw stones you should expect to wake up to a broken window or 2.

You have to type something to enable you to upload from a pc, a single character will do. Then click additional options >browse (locate the image you want to upload) click open, then post.

As I said, I am just giving my view and explaining why he might be posting in such a manner. I am not defending the posts, I don't like them any more than you do and I sincerely hope he stops. I too find them condescending.

However, I will apologise publically to Red-Dog. I didn't mean to anger or upset you. I'd rather remove my posts than argue with such a good friend.

Snoop, while I disagree with you on this issue, I have the up-most respect for you as a person and hold you in the highest regard as a friend.

I know your motives were honourable.

Let's move on.

Carful when you link pictures from outside URLS.

I have seen the people who own these sites get mighty pissed at people leeching their bandwith and change the picture to something Xrated the leecher is still linking to.

Well, that thread certainly went from 'Slightly Annoying' to 'Completely Pissed Off'.
