Title: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: The Camel on January 31, 2007, 12:51:37 PM My knowledge of cars is less than my knowledge of the Mongolian leather industry.
Basically I know nowt. We need to buy a second hand car, and basically we have narrowed it down to an 04 Peugot 307 diesel estate (36,000 miles) or and 01 BMW 320sed diesel estate (65,000 miles). My gut feeling (for no particualr reason) is to go for the BMW, whereas Kat prefers the Peugot. Can anyone who knows anything about cars give a little bit of advice? Areas we are particularly concered with are safety and reliability. Any opinions greatly appreciated. Cheers. Get the BMW. Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: danmonkey on January 31, 2007, 01:02:24 PM If the BMW is in decent nick then that would be my pick. I have a '96 318is petrol with 125k on the clock and still going strong. The diesel should go forever.

Peugeots will run til a certain point then EVERYTHING will go wrong with it. Anything german will go forever. Especially the diesel estate as its designed to be a long haul mule.

The garage selling the BMW is offering a 3 month guarantee. Seems a bit short to me. How much should I try to haggle? It's on offer at £8,950. Sorry for being so clueless. I always try to get atleast a years warranty out of it...Most garages will haggle on that. and ALWAYS haggle on a second hand car..If you don't get the extra warranty (which is worth a fair bob) you will probably get 450 off atleast at most garages. Also have a look on autotrader to see what your car goes for at others..that way you can give yourself a ball park figure. Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: KingPoker on January 31, 2007, 01:42:44 PM Definately stretch them to over 6 months or more. Usually any major problems should become apparent within that time. The price is right for that year give ot take 500 quid. Most dealers will offer 12 months. Tell him that.

Luxury and performance!
Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: byronkincaid on January 31, 2007, 02:15:11 PM mileage seems lowish for the year for a diesel. check the history, owners, where the dealer got it from. has he had a vehicle mileage check done. If so get him to show you the certificate. Full Service history? you don't have to buy the first car you see, take a few BMW diesels out for test drives get an idea of what they should feel like. HPI or Experian clear? Get him to show you what they have on the car.
I think I could drive a 60K Peugeot and a 120K one and feel the difference. Very possible that I couldn't with a BMW. Check the history! Then worry about getting a monkey or whatever off the price. Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: kinboshi on January 31, 2007, 03:54:57 PM The warranty is effectively worthless.
My general advice is buy Japanese for reliability. But I'd generally put German reliability above French. Offer to buy on the spot if he will accept £8k, but assure him that this is your final offer. Be prepaired to walk away. (you can always come back) If you don't get it for £8250 I will be amazed. Very very comfortable. However............................................The rest of the car is very French, ie they only build cars on friday after 4.30 Things to check Brake discs at front will be warped, jack up car and spin wheels, or listen for a slight noise under light pedal movement. The radio controls etc that are on the steering column will operate lottery style, flick a stalk and pick 6 electric items, you now have a 15.6 million to 1 chance one of them will work. if any of the mirrors have been hit hard then the door will have bent and will let water in. Rear spare wheel holder must have a lock or it will fall off when you hit a speed bump. Same for battery while your at it mountings are some times hit and miss Check to see if it was ever recalled, you actually want it to have been as it will be fixed, pugs get lots of recalls. As for the BMW, i hate em, but build is top, engine will go for ever, if a little under powered for this size of car (toque wise) FSH really a must, BMW's don't like poor quality after maket parts, owners do. Never by a red BMW paint quality is vey bad i was told by a paint supplier. Safe bet is the BMW Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: MPOWER on February 01, 2007, 11:06:13 AM I IMHO would buy a BMW.
The 320DSE is a Great car with great torque and overall performance at 65k i'd only buy with BMW Main Dealer Service History. So for this cars the history service at 65k will be 1.Oil 2.Inspection1 3.Oil and hopefully an Inspection 2. This is a £600 service .If the car has had a 2 then it looks like a fair price. Good Luck regards M Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: MPOWER on February 01, 2007, 11:07:41 AM MPower told me "Better Buy a Beemer". Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: blonde17 on February 02, 2007, 12:41:58 AM I actually used to deal in second hand cars so for what it`s worth...Peugeot diesel is one of the best on the market but the rest of the car inc the gear box may let you down , though they are pop with the taxi lads and some do 200.000 plus no prob
BMW solid reliable though the diesels are a little sluggish and it will rattle a bit after 150.000 but the rest of the car will still be around in 100 yrs time. My advice BMW... but save about £1500.. go to your local BCA auctions and pick one up there. Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: lazaroonie on February 02, 2007, 01:51:06 AM would be looking to choose the BM I think. Full History would be essential and be looking for a years warranty. If he says no, then query his own confidence in the products he is selling ? If he doesnt believe in it, how can you ?
Find yourself a good local "independent" mechanic with a reputation for doing BMW work (there are owners groups on the web will tell you where they are). Cars of this age are going to have niggles, and taking to a main dealer for this stuff will cost you an arm and a leg. dont get tied down to one specific car - pick the make/model/spec you want, and then find it. There are hundreds of 5 year old bmw diesels out there. granted the estates hold their value a bit better, but you are in a very strong bargaining position. Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: thetank on February 02, 2007, 02:11:34 AM Laz could buy ice from the eskimos
Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: RichEO on February 02, 2007, 04:20:32 AM like kinboshi said, go Japanese. If you do this then you won't need a warranty, buy privately and save £s.
i went for an IS200, they are only in petrol though and looks like your after a diesel. Maybe a Honda Accord or Mazda 6? If the choice is only between those 2 then my vote is the BMW, after the dealer agrees to a price, get 6 months tax and a full tank. Peugot has lower insurance group, thats about all its got going for it IMO, though if you've got plenty of no claims you wont care about that. Good luck. Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: Longines on February 02, 2007, 10:52:36 AM Mrs Longines used to drive a Puegeot 306. For the last couple of years she's had a '00 BMW 318 estate. It's done 110,000 miles and is spot on. No creaks, no rattles and drives like new.
Get the BMW. Title: Re: O/T Picking a second hand car Post by: Nem on February 02, 2007, 12:28:42 PM |
