The pug HDI engine is one of the best D engines ever, its responsive drives like a petrol and will pull/carry a full load easily.Best engine we ever had
Very very comfortable.

However............................................The rest of the car is very French, ie they only build cars on friday after 4.30

Things to check

Brake discs at front will be warped, jack up car and spin wheels, or listen for a slight noise under light pedal movement.

The radio controls etc that are on the steering column will operate lottery style, flick a stalk and pick 6 electric items, you now have a 15.6 million to 1 chance one of them will work.

if any of the mirrors have been hit hard then the door will have bent and will let water in.

Rear spare wheel holder must have a lock or it will fall off when you hit a speed bump.
Same for battery while your at it mountings are some times hit and miss
Check to see if it was ever recalled, you actually want it to have been as it will be fixed, pugs get lots of recalls.

As for the BMW, i hate em, but build is top, engine will go for ever, if a little under powered for this size of car (toque wise)
FSH really a must, BMW's don't like poor quality after maket parts, owners do.
Never by a red BMW paint quality is vey bad i was told by a paint supplier.
Safe bet is the BMW

I  IMHO would buy a BMW.

The 320DSE is a Great car with great torque and overall performance at 65k i'd only buy with
BMW Main Dealer Service History. So for this cars  the history service at 65k will be
1.Oil
2.Inspection1
3.Oil
and hopefully an Inspection 2. This is a £600 service .If the car has had a 2 then it looks like a fair price.

Good Luck

regards

I actually used to deal in second hand cars so for what it`s worth...Peugeot diesel is one of the best on the market but the rest of the car inc the gear box may let you down , though they are pop with the taxi lads and some do 200.000 plus no prob

BMW solid reliable though the diesels are a little sluggish and it will rattle a bit after 150.000 but the rest of the car will still be around in 100 yrs time.

My advice BMW... but save about £1500.. go to your local BCA auctions and pick one up there.

would be looking to choose the BM I think. Full History would be essential and be looking for a years warranty. If he says no, then query his own confidence in the products he is selling ?  If he doesnt believe in it, how can you ?

Find yourself a good local "independent" mechanic with a reputation for doing BMW work (there are owners groups on the web will tell you where they are). Cars of this age are going to have niggles, and taking to a main dealer for this stuff will cost you an arm and a leg.

dont get tied down to one specific car - pick the make/model/spec you want, and then find it. There are hundreds of 5 year old bmw diesels out there. granted the estates hold their value a bit better, but you are in a very strong bargaining position.

like kinboshi said, go Japanese. If you do this then you won't need a warranty, buy privately and save £s.

i went for an IS200, they are only in petrol though and looks like your after a diesel. Maybe a Honda Accord or Mazda 6?

If the choice is only between those 2 then my vote is the BMW, after the dealer agrees to a price, get 6 months tax and a full tank.

Peugot has lower insurance group, thats about all its got going for it IMO, though if you've got plenty of no claims you wont care about that.

Good luck.

Mrs Longines used to drive a Puegeot 306. For the last couple of years she's had a '00 BMW 318 estate. It's done 110,000 miles and is spot on. No creaks, no rattles and drives like new.

Get the BMW.
