Title: Jazz- nice! Post by: KingPoker on February 13, 2007, 11:20:55 PM I went on a trip to amsterdam last summer and went on a jazz boat and since then have been hooked on it- my missus hates it- but was just wondering if anyone knows of somewhere i can get some for 'free'? Or if there are jazz fans out there who can reccommend some singers or bands. Have some now which i listen to when playing poker (think its ideal poker music) but would love to expand on it!

Post by: KingPoker on February 13, 2007, 11:28:31 PM cheers taximan, we actually have a massive one near me called the Brecon Jazz Festival, some may have heard of it. Its briliant but might be a nice summer trip down to cornwall for your suggested one. Only trouble is persuading my missus to come!

When you put in jazz it doesnt always come up with the best results! I usually google first, i downloaded a lot of 60s soul music the other day by artists i hadnt heard of before. Google classic jazz albums, artists, groups ect, get a pen and paper and away you go. Title: Re: Jazz- nice! Title: Re: Jazz- nice! Post by: Djinn on February 14, 2007, 05:10:31 AM A friend of mine, who was looking over my shoulder and has been a semi-professional jazz musician for 5 years, has this to say...
"Please, for the love of God, do NOT listen to any Kenny G, ever. If you want contemporary jazz, I very highly recommend: Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Kenny Garrett, to get you started." www.pandora.com is your friend. (This is rather cool)... Title: Re: Jazz- nice! Post by: Weblomaniac on February 14, 2007, 01:37:20 PM Pandora is the dogs... I second that ;iagree; I haven't listened to anything else since I started using Pandora. Just whack in the name of an artist or track you like and it starts playing other stuff it thinks you will like. Then you can give tracks a thumbs Up or Thumbs down and it will refine it's choices. As you add more artist and track names it learns more.... Absolutely awesome, and it's free Title: Re: Jazz- nice! Post by: boldie on February 14, 2007, 01:46:28 PM Kenny G is good if you like saxaphone Kenny G is the devils spawn. I love John Coltrane. also Winton Marsalis (or any of the Marsalis brothers for that matter), for something slightly more fusion Steps Ahead is awesome Title: Re: Jazz- nice! Post by: KingPoker on February 14, 2007, 01:47:58 PM God i remeber pandora now. We always used to use it for the home game coz you could select whatever type of music you wanted and it got it. It was brilliant, will definately be getting back on there!
P.S. Kenny G is just Satan with a Saxaphone! Title: Re: Jazz- nice! Post by: boldie on February 14, 2007, 01:53:52 PM wow nthis is the first time I heard of pandora and they seem to have everything I like (which is pretty amazing since I listen to a lot of 90's guitar bands that were obscure even at the time (like Cacophony RacerX etc)) anyway to download from this?

Add Chet Baker and Art Blakey to the list. If you want something a little more difficult to listen to, try Thelonius Monk and Jaco Pastorius. Vocal jazz - Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitz, Nina Simone, Eliane Elias ... you can't go wrong :) Title: Re: Jazz- nice! Post by: Jeff D on February 15, 2007, 10:30:36 PM Gives me great pleasure to pass on my particular favourites:
Ben Webster, the greatest tenor saxophonist (brings tears to your eyes). Ramsey Lewis, download his 'Time Flies' album and you'll want to get everything this great pianist has ever done, including his funk band 'Urban Knights'. Gene Harris, another great pianist. Female Singers: Ella, Billie H, Madellaine Peyroux Male: early Al Jarreau, Michael Buble, early Ray Charles, George Benson(Breezin' is a great album) and don't forget the King..........LOUIS ARMSTRONG enjoy. PS. You could probably convert your wife by introducing her to jazz through the recent work of Jamie Cullum, Madellaine Peyroux, Michael Buble and Norah Jones. All good artists and very modern. It's worked with my daughters! Title: Re: Jazz- nice!
