My 3 to follow on Day 1 are...

Tim Blake (due a bit of luck on the key hands)

Mick Fletcher ( aggressive chip gatherer, and if he gets an early march will be very dangerous)

Big Trev Reardon (again an early chip gatherer with gear changes)

a special mention to Ryan "GRANITE" Fronda (he played a hand in the first 5 levels at Brighton .... they had to call a nurse !! ) ;)

Good luck to all the blondeites in Day 1.

Well, we're here. Due to the latest Grosvenor rules in which we're not allowed to bring our laptops onto the casino floor or into the cardroom, we are currently working in a designated press room out back (bit like a backstage pass at a concert).

Unfortunately, the wifi isn't working for anyone in the press room, which is highly annoying, so we're back to our vodafone mobile cards. Bah.

Anyhow, the player list is on page 1, and most of them have arrived on time, with some early arrivals being:

Tighty
Benwoo
Ryan Fronda
Howard Plant
Racing Ronnie
Mickey Wernick
Ashley Hayles
Mukesh M
Red-Dog
Sid Harris
Henning Granstad
Martino Libertino
Nick Slade
Matt Tyler
Chili Pepper
S Chattha
Womble
Ariston
Hawko

Apparantly, due to heavy traffic on the motorway, it looks like a 30 minute delay is on the cards, if you'll excuse the pun.

I didn't recognise him without his cap, but this is New Zealander Greg Howard, who finalled in the Bolton GukPT.

Some of you may recognise his online alias, crosscourtbh, which has been popping up regularly across the blonde forum. I think he owes 50p for the tin, so I'll nab that off him at some point tonight.

Yep, there are loads tonight, and one of them is this chap, Matt Dale. I think his moniker on blonde is 'mango' or something similar.

I have emerged from the traffic, which is as bad as the players harassing reception say it is, and joined Snoopy in the Press Area which is actually pleasingly close to the tourney room, and comes with a fridge, although no wifi, as yet.

Looking forward to covering the second of these events, good structure, attracting the interesting players, yatta yatta yatta.

Going for a wander and a cup of coffee.

That's not the way it is Boo. We CAN take ouor Lappies into the building, but NOT into the Cardroom or Casino floor, basically, not in the Public Areas. "Security" is the reason.

And thery have given us Wifi now, so that's the bizz, though it seems to have fallen over at Walsall right now.

"Will you get a photo with me and Greco, snoops?" asks Chili.

"Sure, no worries," I reply.

Skipping up to Greco, "Michael, snoopy demanded a photo of us two," fibs Chili.

I then go on to say to Greco, "I bet you get all the time, don't you, people wanting photos?"

"Not as much as I used to, but yeah,"

"Is it annoying?"

"Nah, I don't mind, sometimes I get people asking me when I'm out with the girlfriend though. A guy asked me at a bar once to have a piccy with some girl, but the place was really busy and she was right over the side, I was with the Mrs and just wanted a quick drink, but I eventually caved in. When I went over there, which took a bloomin age because of the crowd, I said 'Hi' and she said 'What?'. 'You want a picture right?' and she just replies 'No'. Sigh!"

At that exact moment, a random woman in the casino comes up and asks, "Excuse me, please could I take a photo of you with my friend."  :D

Bah, it never happens to me!

We've encountered our first exit of the day, and it's NOT Ariston.

"Why does it always happen to me?" cries Rumit Somaiya.

"Aces?" I ask.

"No, Kings. I flopped a set, Lucy (Rokach) moved in with a flush draw and hit. She called my pre-flop raise with A-6."

Whereas I stuill bump into peeps who don't know who I am, sigh.

I really wish I was there in Walsall, but work calls, retirement is a temporary thing of the past, so it's not to be, but I'll be in Crdiff.

Another early exit, this time Welshman Alan Davies.

He was unlucky though, Sofa, bit of a nasty one.

With a Flop of Qh Kh 8d, Philip Dorington called a 1.5k bet from Alan before re-raising the 2.5k bet on the Td Turn to 6.5k.

Alan moved all-in with his seemingly formidable Qc Qd and Philip made what was, by then, an obligatory call with Ad Kd.

Dorrington sighed and shrugged his shoulders before holding his hands up when the River dealt a cruel blow to the Welshman with a nasty 3d.

Ouch

Here's a small list of those not even making it to the at-table stage due to the traffic:

S. Howard
Antony Mackay
Osman Mustanoglu
Giovanni Vaccarella

Reserves are now in in their place, according to Jon Raab - And Jules Adamson got in there just at the last possible second, along with Phil Dorrington and, er, two other guys.

Ryan Fronda has doubled up with Aces, all the chips going in on a 3d 2c Qd 9c board (last bet was 3.7k by Ryan) with Mateyboy (I think it's Sudling)  holding A-Q. Blank on the River leaves Sudling down to the felt.

Before even making one circuit of the packed cardroom, I already had more information from players to pass on than my cold-infused brain can really cope with (see how I subtly encourage sympathy for my mundane illness).

One early catch was Ray Brown (pictured) who's made a decent-sounding handful of recent finals, and would like to say a big hello to Snatiramas.

He doesn't look too happy, but Welsh lad (often tipped by sofaking) has doubled through Richard Ashby after catching a nice Turn.

All the spondoolies went in on a 6d Qd 7h 8s with Ouday's 4-5 crushing Richard's Pocket Queens, no Full House arriving on the River.

As a result, Ashby is down to approximately 2k.

Board = 3h Jc 9s 3s

Ashley Hayles bets 1k and Maria calls.

River = 5c

A shifty looking Hayles then sticks in 2.1k (pot was around 3k) and Maria calls with Q-9.

"I've got nothing," confesses the Bear Hugger as he mucks.

Nice play from Maria 'Chili Pepper' Demetriou, bet she was glad I was watching.

ps. Can anyone tell me anything more about Hayles, I'm seeing him around quite a lot at the moment?

Early eliminations are few and far between - but action is definitely taking place on Lucy Rokach's table.  That first hand double upping flush draw hit hasn't stayed put in her stack, and she's back down to a smallish 6,900.  There is now someone else with a big early stack there, going to find his name if the trend continues.

Other stacks looking healthy:  Ray Brown  16,000 (glad he introduced himself right at the start)
Maria 'Chili' Demetriou  15,800

On Chili's table we have a certain Mick McCool, whom I didn't notice on first pass because he's totally quiet.  He's got one of those mini-movie players and appears to be engrossed in some kind of sword-fighting thing with Templars in it (I had a brief over-the-shoulder peek).  He's on 11k so must have played a hand, however.

Paul Jackson + Willie Tann
Joe Grech + Mick McCloskey  (Julian and Mr. Burke on there too)
Dave Colclough + Roberto Romanello  (Torstein Iversen and Karl Mahrenholz on there too)
Ryan Fronda + John Gale  (Paul Vicary and Iwan Jones there too).  I arrived at that table when Ryan was saying something like, "Next time I'll be raising with that," to Iwan.  Looks like that could be interesting.

Nick was apparently down to just 4,800 after the first few hands but is now back to a safer 9k.  No detail yet as to what inspired this quick loss and recovery, although heard something about his betting (with some spanners) on an A-A-8-8-x board and getting called by "the nuts," which I think wasn't actually the nuts, but an Ace wary of the often-present Quads....

Title: Re: Walsall GukPT: Day 1A - Interactive
Post by: Djinn on February 15, 2007, 05:52:15 PM
I overhear someone telling Nik Persaud off for "calling off 500 on the river with King high," and am all prepared to report that he's started the tournament without his, er, characteristic focus...but no, he gets a chance to explain himself:  He's in the big blind with Ks 2d.  Under the gun flat calls preflop, and it folds round, including the small blind.  So, flop 3s 6s 5s.  Nik bets out 100; call.
Turn:  Ad  Check-check
River:  6c  Nik checks, limper bets 500.  Call.  Nik mucks (but tells everyone he had King high) when the limper shows the mighty Ts 6h.

Two things about this story - firstly, surely he should just show that King high to discourage later, more pricey bluff attempts (especially if he's going to tell everyone anyway)?

Secondly, I don't know about the sole preflop limper with T-6 being Under the Gun, for that would make it Paul Parker, legendary "I might play a hand when it gets heads up" player.  If it's true, we're going to have to start to disregard his own highly successful mythology...

This won't surprise the locals, but Andy Johnson is at it his old tricks, involved in virtually every pot.

It's working out for him, first eliminating Ray Wyre with A-T vs J-J (a rather unfortunate four Fives hit the board) before winning a big pot off Michael Bolous, his 4k bet into a pot of 3k and a board of 4d 5c 5s Kd 8h being enough to force the youngster into a reluctant fold.

Big hand for Dave Colclough (although it could have been bigger, in a good or bad way) -

Torstein Iversen raises to 225 (something tells me this is not a rare occurrence) and he gets four callers, including Adam Wilkinson in the cutoff, small blind Roberto Romanello and big blind El Blondie.

Flop:  Kh Jh 3c.  Check to Adam, who bets around 1k (I was momentarily distracted by a story from Karl which I will also relate momentarily).  Back around, passed by Roberto who said, "I should bet this," when he found himself first to act but didn't like it any more by this point, while Dave check-raised a substantial 3k when it got back to him.
Now heads up, and Adam thinks about it for a while, before pushing all-in, for around 8k more, a stack which just about covers Mr. C.  He understandably takes his time thinking about this one, and after a long couple of minutes of that, frankly, intimidating staring thing he does, he passes face up Kc Jc.

Big fold for Ariston.

Flop = 6s 2c Qc

Ariston bets 2k, leaving next door neighbour Stefan Eccles to move all-in for 10k (although Ariston only had 4.3k left).

Ariston somehow manages to fold Kings only for Eccles to reveal Sixes.

"I wouldn't normally fold but he went to Hollywood before he moved all-in," added Mr Cawley.

ARISTON LIVES!!!

Started with 0, his survival factor is now up to 3.

Another Kings fold, if you can believe what poker players say... this time from equally lairy Romanello.  He raised pre-flop and got the standard re-raise from Karl Mahrenholz.  The flop came Ten-high and Roberto bet out something like 1,600.  Raise from Karl to 4,000, and a reluctant pass.  No-one showed anything, and even when directly asked, by me, a respectable member of the press with a watertight secret-keeping record, Karl wouldn't say if he had Aces.

Guys

Could you please do me a favour if you get the chance and give me an occasional update on John Tabatabai, King muff.
Regards Nick

Noted. Can you give a description to ensure we get the right guy. People have already started moving around.

Not the best piccy of him, but it's Stephen AuYeung (10,675) nonetheless. Frequenters to Broadway and, in particular, Walsall will definitely recognise him. Been playing for quite a while and was even the guy who named the Devilfish. There's one for the trivia part of your brains.

I KNOW IT and ifm will have to confirm this one for me, but even though this chipy chap is a Liverpudlian, I often see him around these shores so he might well be a Scouser living in Brum. Nice guy though.

A slow trickle of Scandinavians look to have discovered the GUKPT - above with what looks like a halo is Torstein Iversen, part of the successful Team Norsemen who are always mixing it up in the EPTs, but rarely get to the UK.  Below is Henning Granstad, DTD Pro (as in Ask The) who looks like he might be telling me that his is actually superman.  Really, I have no idea what was going on there.

John Tabatabai just won a nice pot off Michael Muldoon. His 3k bet on a 6h 8s Ahrt Jh board was called by the popular Irishman, before he took the pot down with a 10.5k bet on the 7c River for pretty much his entire stack. As Muldoon was folding, Jac Arama complained that the dealer had counted out the chips when he wasn't asked. "Shouldn't you wait to be asked? Sometimes chips look more than they are." This was confirmed by the superisor who said that the dealer shouldn't count up the bet until asked by the player. I wasn't sure to be honest.

In the Dublin EPT last year Marcel Luske went mad at the dealer for the same thing. He wanted the bet to look intimidating and discourage play, when the dealer started counting he was very unhappy.

Great reporting everyone - Bern playing tomorrow so I'll be railing hopefully Friday evening onwards (bok if ever I've heard one!)

Nieve Peters (so sry if the spelling is wrong) has doubled up after getting all-in with Queens vs the Nines of Richard Herbet.

Board = 6-8-7-J-3

Whilst Richard is down to the cloth, Nieve Peters was probably touching cloth after that flop.

Ian Herbert is up to 22,300.

Ian, Paul Gourlay ad Mick Heron all saw a cheap A-5-7 Flop. Mick checked, so did Ian only for Paul to bet 1k.

With both players smooth calling, all players then checked the rag Turn.

3 on the River and Mick came out betting, 900. Ian made it 2.5k, Paul pushed all-in, Mick folded and Ian called.

Mick had 7-5, Paul had A-3 and Ian had A-5, leaving everybody with two pair, but it was the Welshman who picked up the pot.

Whilst Richard is down to the cloth, Nieve Peters was probably touching cloth after that flop.

Niamh (odd spelling, but the truth) is now, suddenly and unequivocally OUT - down to 100 chips after moving all in on a 9-3-2 flop with her Ts Td, and finding Ad Ac in the hand of Richard Wong.

Yes, Richard Wong is now the owner of a near 38k stack, and not out, as previously thought.  There is another Wong playing, and he's the casualty, as it turns out.

Meanwhile, it looks like Nik Persaud might be the level-before-dinner-break leader with something like 42k.  And here's how it happened...

Sunny Chattha raised preflop with Qc Js, called by Nik on the button, as is to be expected...
Flop:  Qh Qs Kh  Sunny bets out the pot, gets called.
Turn:  2c  Sunny checks, Nik bets 2,500, gets called.
River:  Jh  Now Sunny checks his house (sneaky, or so he thinks), gets the expected 5k bet and moves in for 12,000.  He's instacalled by Nik holding Qd Kd... Down to just 1,000 but laughing about it.

Now with his table monster lead, Nik is being a self-confessed wuss.  He raised on the button, and got re-raised 3,500 out of the blinds (THIS is the guy who had the T-6 under the gun limp trips earlier, not Paul as I couldn't bring myself to believe...)  Anyway, Nik thinks out loud, "He's got the A-K for sure.  Maybe A-Q suited."  He throws his 8d 8c face-up anyway, and is shown a smirky Kh 6c.

BREAKING NEWS

ARISTON IS STILL IN!!!

3,950... "Haven't played a hand, am getting anted away."

TELL HIM TO GAMBLE PLEASE!!!

He got all the way down to around 2,000 and then "Limper's tax went into effect."  That seems to mean that he moved in one time with a proudly shown T-4 and then a second time with "worse" but got a double fold round and picked up enough to propel him back to just under 4k.  Ask again after the dinner break, which is in about half an hour.

Barny Boatman is chip leader after winning a massive 4 way pot. Bit of an odd one really, retold by Tighty.

Sunny Chattha had moved in under the gun with As-Qh, and Nik (9s-7s), Barny (sb, Js-xs) and Sid Harris (bb, Ks-Qh) all called.

Flop = Tc Qs 4d

Sid bet and both players called.

Turn = 6s

Sid all-in, Barny made the call (must have been pot odds or a chance for the chip lead) and Nik folded.

River came another spade and Barny took a massive pot.

Post by: Djinn on February 15, 2007, 08:33:06 PM
Howard Plant and Ryan Fronda have been clashing in small but frequent battles.  They check it all the way down on a board which comes:  6s Qs Qd Qh (here Howard announces, "I have a full house") and finally Tc.  Ryan shows Ad Jc, and Howard throws his hand, saying, "I thought I had a full house..."

Then, Howard Plant early min raises and gets called by Michael Greco and Ryan Fronda (and perhaps another, couldn't tell, not relevant).
The flop comes Qh 4c 3s, Howard checks, Michael bets and gets one caller in Mr. VC.
Turn:  5d  check-check
River:  Tc  check, and Ryan shows Ahrt Qd which is good enough.  Slowly but surely Mr. Fronda is building a stack with which to terrorise his table by calling with high-kickered Aces.

Apparantly, due to heavy traffic on the motorway, it looks like a 30 minute delay is on the cards, if you'll excuse the pun.

I think people should just leave earlier, there is always a delay and its always due to traffic!

Hello Snoopy and Jen,

Best of luck to Greg Howard, nice guy, I'm sure there others, I'm too lazy to read the full list.

Ian Woodley has won doubled up off Phil Peters in what was clearly and unavoidable all-in situation. T-T vs 7-7 on a T-7-rag Flop. Don't think he's escaping that one.

As the players drift into their 75 min dinner break, a mini saga from RED-DOG - he's on a slightly low but not desperate 8k.  For starters he ran JJ into Howard Plant's KK - a low flop got a call from RED, and even a Queen following, but after the check on the river he found that he'd actually done well not to lose any more than half his stack.  Then he raced a short-stack's JJ with overs and won that one - so instead of severely shortened he's still breathing fairly easily.

Not so Mick McCool, whose bowl of rice 2k was all in with Ac 4c against Aspades Ks, but a two pair on the board kept him in over the break.  "I wish you'd had Sevens, now," he said (the double pair was Nines and something Overs)...

Thanks, we had a bit of tucker at the wrong time so not too hungry now.

DTD aid us financially for EPTs, WPT and WSOP, rather than the Grosvenor events. However, they are still the forum sponsors so we'll do our best to keep an eye out for their players. Michael Greco is in one of those middle tables and not quite as easy to get to, but I'll have a butchers after the break and get a chippy count.

Reserves are now in in their place, according to Jon Raab - And Jules Adamson got in there just at the last possible second

He was on my table with Iwan, Gale, Fronda etc.

During the first level, Gale bets 175 (1 x grey + 3 x orange) on AAK board. Jules attempts to call with 3 x green + 1 x orange. So it's now 1525 to go.

The turn A was quite nice for mateyboy who was 3rd to act with AJ....

I tried searching for Grant 'Longines' Mason but his seat his empty. He may have moved seat, but because I don't know what he looks like, I can only wait for him to confirm his exit (if that is the case) on blonde later.

Don't think it was possible for me to play the hand any worse. My only consolation was if I played it much, much better, I'd still have been going home....

QQ vs Mr Gale's 9h6h - flop was rainbow T87.

Just heading down now for the last straggler counts - we're no longer actually allowed to write right next to where the action's happening (Security measures in all Grosvenor) so there may be a lag of some extra minutes as we get out of the warren of service corridors and secret back rooms we're based in nowadays...

Jen's on the case. I did see Ash folding Nines pre-flop to Mick McCool's 4k pre-flop all-in. Mick showed A-K when the blinds folded. Ash was definitely considering making the call though.

He's on 13,150.

The end of the Requests:

Dave Colclough     10,600
TightEnd              NIS  (not in seat - OUT)
Paul Parker            OUT  (having dwindled too far)
John Gale             27,500
Des Jonas              OUT

Richard Redmond is also out, after losing with his 5c 5s to Ad Kd - but from the consolation frowning of his table mates, I reckon something more sinister than a straight preflop race happened to him (just caught the very end).

This is Robert Bright (who ran well in Bolton) giving Penley the staredown. The Board reads 9d 9c 3s Jh 4c. Robert had bet 1.5k on the Turn and been called, before his 1.6k bet on the River was re-raised to 5k. He eventually called Dave but found his Pocket Fives to be way behind his opponents Cowboys.

Two hot contenders for Climber of the Day:

Will it be Mick McCool (top), down to just 800 chips at one point, who's clawed his way back to 4k?  In the process he avoided losing his hard-won gains in a hand against Ray Brown (also pictured).  He held 9-T, and flopped 5-8-9, betting from the button, and getting called.  The turn brought an Ace, and now Ray bet out 800, called by Mick.  The rivered Ten brought both the McCool two pair, and a 2,300 bet out from Ray, which he avoided calling (it would have left him back under 1,000) and was shown A-5 for his laydown.

Or will it be his table mate Henning Granstad?  The smiling Norwegian has pulled 1,400 back to 8,000 over three long levels.  Let's see who's in at the end of the day, and whose stack has grown the most.  That's how I usually determine Climber of the Day, for anyone technically minded out there...

Finally, two pics from table Leaders - Barney Boatman and Nik Persaud, both near the top of the pile in chips.  They've drawn the lighting short straw, however, so Barney's been artificially lightened with my econophotoshop, while I had to resort to the fiendishly uncontrollable flash for Nik, which makes him look possessed.  Never mind.

Yes, it does appear that brave Flushy is refusing to go to bed, in case, "I get up early."  He tells me he still has 10,000 chips.  Which, strictly speaking, is true.

PI Dick Slade is up to 14k.

Moving over the top of Andy Mile's Flop bet (6-J-3), the Northerner comments, "Come on, it's only a game, don't be a (naughty bodily part that resembles a cat), stick em in," to which Andy replies, "I call".

K-J vs. A-A isn't good enough though, especially with an Ace on the Turn. And how about a Jack on the River to rub it in?

Miles OUT.

Just after those chip counts...

Local boy and twin (boy, that can be confusing) Chris Lipris has doubled up.

In fact, I accidentally caught sight of his Aces as I was passing. I'm sure he glanced slighty over his shoulder to see if anyone was there, so I decided to watch from a distance.

Anyhow, Gale limped, Lipris raised and Howard and Gale both called.

Flop = Kh Jd Ahrt

Lipris bets 2k, Howard folds and Gale calls.

Lipris then moves in on the 3d Turn and, after a lenghty dwell, Gale calls with the speculative holding of Jh 6h.

The set holds up and Lipris is up to 15k.

Gives you an insight into how Gale plays though, not afraid to gamble when he has chips.

Well, it's not Mick McCool's day to be Climber - he eventually got into that AK vs QQ race and lost the lot.  So ruthlessly quick, this game, sometimes.  But Michael Greco is finding it slow - "Pair of fives my best hand all day."  His boredom threshold might be in danger of being crossed soon, although he assures us he will be, "Grinding to the end..."

Elsewhere, serial caller Matt Dale has pulled his socks up and regained some chips (11k) while RED-DOG gets a narrow escape:

He'd raised in mid position with Ad Kc, receiving two callers.  The Ahrt 3h 4s flop brought a bet out from the blinds caller of 2,500.  Awkward, considering Red's stack only totalled around 9,000... so he decided to push, but found 4h 4c against him... luckily he was saved by the running 2-5 for the split-creating straight, and admits that he's been given a reprieve from the cards.  Currently trying to forget about the problems that hand caused him ("Should I have pushed?  Could I ever fold? etc.) and building up a more playable stack before the larger antes kick in.

This is Martin Folkes, folks, one of the 'originals' according to Ash Pervais.

"Has he played with Wild Bill Hickock?" I asked.

"Nah, but Mickey Wernick has, went to school with him."  :D

Meanwhile... Neighbours John Gale (24k) and Paul Jackson get pushed off their respective button raise and s.b. call by a 3k re-raise from the big blind...that's how to get rid of the top guys.  Everyone will be doing it soon...

And another table has been broken; we're down to 120.  My guess for finishing number is: 75.  Apart from, "Who's the chip leader?" the question I get asked most often on a Day One is, "How many d'you think we'll get down to tonight."  I honestly have no idea why this should be, but I always pretend to think for a while before stabbing in the dark.

HERBIE GOES BANANAS!

Funny one for you here...

Flop = Kh Jh 6c

Ian Herbert bets, Sandu moves all-in for an extra 500 to which Ian responds, "Crap, I didn't realise he was so short, I can'f fold."

"Just a draw (5h 2h)," says a desperate Sandu, oblivious to the fact that he is ahead, as proven when Ian reveals his 4d 2d.

Turn = Kd

River = 4c

Ian takes it, you gotta laugh.

His opponent just plays it well in my opinion.

Chip second or third Nik Persaud has been moved to Ryan Fronda's immediate left.  He's therefore the big blind RED will be attempting to steal... he's still having to explain that he's a luckbox for that early House vs. House double through, but I notice at least a few more chips have been added since then.  He said his Aces (card rack, too) nearly took a chunk off him, when someone with T-7 saw a T-7-2 flop with him...

And Dave Colclough, still pondering that (much) earlier pass of two pair re-raises an under-the-gun raiser to steal another thousand, all the time surmising that far from a dominating hand or even a nut draw, the guy he gave so much respect at the beginning was purely on the steal himself.  No one tortures players about their play like themselves.

If I remember correctly, one of Dave's diary posts from last years WSOP, was about an A-8-4 rainbow flop after he called a raise with A-8 and so did an early position limper, the limper checked, the raiser bet out, Dave raised and the limper pushed. Raiser folded and Dave called only to see a set of 4's. Anyway Dave chastised himself in the diary for not folding because it was obvious (to Dave) what he could only have. Perhaps this had an effect on Dave been more wary with future strong but not lock hands?

Bambos has played almost no hands, it looks like, today, and hasn't had over 10k at any point.  Just now he raised to 3,300 after Ian Woodley limped in under the gun (which could mean almost anything).  "I can beat A-K," sighs Woodley as he releases his 2s 2c.
"I could beat A-K as well," remarks Bambos, stoical in his small pot "first winning hand" Ad Aspades...
Barney Boatman pipes up, telling Ian, "You should've played it the Jac Arama way - stop the bluff..."

Jatinder Purewal has virtually doubled up, although Phil Dorrington made a good fold with Queens.

Flop was 3c 9c Ahrt, Phil made it 2.5k and Jatinder went all-in for what looked like just 1,150 more, but Phil realised he was in trouble (A-Q in fact) and clicked the fold button at the right time. Bet he was glad Jatinder didn't reveal the flush draw.

Bonkers Hand Crowns New Leader News Now -

I was drawn over by an excited Martyn Cavanagh to get some muttered commentary courtesy of Paul Jackson on this crazy hand - There was a standard raise, called by Edward Phipps on the button.  According to Paul, this guy has been playing 80% of hands, calling with any two and winning enough of them to have a stack of around 30k by the time this hand happened.  Anyway, the big blind then makes it 5,200 to go (a re-raise of 4k) losing the original guy, but not the tenacious Mr. Phipps.

Flop came Ten high.  Now, bear in mind that the pot gets to over 60k here - it goes, bet out, raise all in, instacall.
Big blind, Mr. Greg Howard showed Aspades Kd
Button, Mr. Edward Phipps showed Ts Jh
The rest came low, and the rest of the table was speechless.  "What planet are they on, and why do I not have any chips?" grumbles ActionJack, or words to that effect, as his 8k or so looks even less powerful...

Pictured - the new chip leader, in process of stacking.

We've come close. In fact there was a bit of kafuffle on Table Granstad, the Norwegian becoming rather irritated at being forced to wait.

Basically, what happened is that with the Flop showing 3c 2c 7s, Mick Fletcher bet 2,750 only for Peter 'The Bandit' Evans to make it 5,450. As you may have noticed, this is 50 short, and before anything could be said, Mick Fletcher had raised again for the rest of his chips.

Clearly beat, Peter tries to convince everyone that it should be a smooth call and his chips should be returned, but following a bit of a seemingly endless debate with supervisor Zak, he conceded, splashed the chips in and folded.

"It was obvious he was raising," rants Granstad, "this is ridiculous."

In the meantime, Bandit has a right cob on.

He's just this minute gone.  Sandy from badbeat had sent Hartwith to go keep an eye on the short stack (as he was likely to double or bust at any second) but his chips weren't there when we got down and it turned out that he'd gone with T-J vs. T-K, both hitting trips and being outkicked.

Is it just me, or do Ian Woodley and Barny Boatman look like twins?

Anyhow, I mistakenly made the suggestion to them, to which Barny replied, "Oh thank you very much."

"But you do, two peas in a pod."

"You'll look like us soon if you keep that up," moans an irate Barny clenching his fist.  :D

To which Ian Woodley responded, "Hold on, I'm the one that should be moaning, not you!"

Matt Tyler has got the cake after his Aces were raised by Matt Dale and then all-in by Philip Dorrington. Matt also moved all-in forcing to Matt Dale to fold, only to find out that Dorrington was making a move with 4c 2c. Anyhow, although the Flop came an 'I've got an out at least' 2-Q-Q Flop, the 6 on the Turn and the 2 on the River meant that a relieved Tyler was allowed to rake in the chips.

Only a couple of outer tables remaining, one of which is made up of the following:

Maria Demetriou -- 11,350
Tony Choy-Sing -- 16,050
Mickey Wernick -- 7,350
Ouday Hickary -- 22,350
Tim Blake -- 17,150
Adam Wilkinson -- 30,550
Nick Jenkins -- 16,050
Roberto Romanello -- out

Incidentally, Wilkinson just made a smart fold with Queens to A-K on a King high flop.

Doesn't Chili look thrilled!

Ryan Fronda puts himself through the wringer over a 6k call on the river with the board standing:  4s 4h 5d Qs 5c.  He checked, and found this bet into the 9k or so in the pot.  Going through all the options of what he puts his opponent on, from Queens through to pure bluff, he eventually calls, only to see the 4c 4d in his opponent's hand...

So Ryan Fronda, after pressing the 'Time' button quite vigorously (with a real decision, to be fair) has 12,700.
Neighbour Tom McCready has just 6,125, and presumably would like the whole thing to move at a brisker pace.  But he's still awake, which is more than I can say for some of the players who look like they're already half asleep.  Pictures coming.

Someone who is definitely out is one of my picks, Joe Grech, who made his swan song with Pocket Nines v the K-Q of Martino Libertini.

On the same table, Damien Evans takes out a player when his Kings hold up against Tens, all-in by the Queen high Flop.

Yes, I'm not the biggest fan of updater-taunting Iwan Jones, who was all, "Bet you can't do this one," and tired old me guessed 3k short, an unheard-of margin of error, making him giggle in a "not so smart now, are we?" sort of way.  Well, it's less than 20k, that's all I'm prepared to say.  Clever stacking, well done.

Meanwhile, his facial hair has grown an inch in the last hour.

He didn't show, just did that annoyed card-wave-and-muck.  But I think I saw the Aspades, and somehow think there's more likely to have been a Queen with it than it standing alone with the two pair.  I might just ask him.

Matt Dale is also a gonna, finding his J-Ts in deep deep toruble against Jatinder Purewal's Pocket Tens.

4c 9c 4s Aspades gave him some outs, but even though he asked nicely for a spade or a jack, the dealer failed to oblige.

Just had a quick chat with RED-DOG in the break - he's "clinging on to the wreckage" and looking for any open spot to push his last chips in with.  But there's been a raise in front of him every time, and he can't bring himself to take the plunge with any two in a situation in which he's pretty much bound to be called.  That's a rubbish position to be in, I hope the way becomes clear for him before Day Two...

Hey Snoopy -

Had started to get cards and was building stack up to around 30k chips. The 'bonkers' hand was a misread by me. I sensed weakness when he called all in after the pot was up to around 15k chips or so with J high on the board. I put him on AQ and was prepared to race. (I made the call similar to one you make in an online sit and go, and in retrospect made the wrong play.... doh

I got a flush draw on the turn so had 15 outs and was praying for 1 of them - but cest la vie it never happened.
If it had of happened would have been in the top 5.

I hadnt made too many friends with my play that hour as I had played 4 -5 hands very aggressively and grown my stack from 12k -30k with strong raising. Including KK vs Lucy who didnt like me pushing her around and doing a ballsy 4 times raise on 3 raised limpers holding a mid range PP in the big blind.

What was amazing was that Jackson was on life support below 5k chips and John Gale had whittled to sub 10k and Lucy sub 13k so in the space of 1 hour i had jumped to 2nd in stack size on the table. Just played 1 too may aggressive plays on a misread.

Wont be playing Cardiff but will see you at Monte carlo and Mancester for Leg 4.

Great updates.

Good luck to all blondietes still in

greg

It's short stack double up outdraw hour here!

Firstly, RED-DOG found his moment, and got it all in with J-9.  He was called by J-Q.  Eek.  First card out: 9, Turn card: Q, River card: 9.  11,000 for Tom.

Then, Chili got it all in with Qs Qc preflop (more of a Genuine hand this one) but was called by Mickey Wernick with the genuiner Ad Ahrt.
The board came out:  Qh 9d 5s 9s Ts and so Chili approaches the 20k mark, while Mickey is left with around half that.  All good humoured, though, if anything, Maria was wincing - I only ran over to the table because I saw her head bowed down over her arms in an "Oh no" kind of way...

This is MZ Hussain, an absolute nightmare to get rid of, and he's so quiet too, so he always slips under the radar without so much as a murmur. Good, solid player, he has as good a chance as any of being present during the latter stages of this event. If not, then it's going to take a big hand to get rid of him.

Action in the slowly draining last seconds -
Maria gets a caller preflop and a 7s Qc 9c flop.  She bets what looks like 4k; call.
Turn:  2h  She checks, and Matey pushes in for around 14k.  Clearly not happy with this turn of events, she eventually lets it go, and is shown Jd 9d which may or may not have been ahead (but probably was)...

Then the chip counts were underway even as the final dwells were being dwelled, and we're getting emailed the list so's we can pack up and go to sleep in the quickest possible time...

Yep - hope you slept well. Excellent stuff. Great service.I had logged on at the motorway services to see the updates.
Now back home - can at least play the Sunday Events on PS and FT now. (could it be an omen)

Say gidday to Alan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=18) Henson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=18) from me on Saturday.
He is on life support but stranger things have happened.
