Ive been playing nearly 2 years and have always had reasonable results. recently i seemed to have made a transition in my game that i feel has upped me a few levels. I feel more confident and my play and reads seem to be very good.
I play at my local Grosvenor card room around once a week against what i consider some very good players.
My last 13 tournaments all £50-£100 fouts i have 8 final tables and 4 outright wins.I can also say honestly ( beyond the usual winning of a few races which you need ) i haven't had major luck or cards in this time.

My question is ...where can i gauge myself as a player in the great scheme of things ?? i have played a couple of £200 pound festival events and actually led one with a huge chip lead before making an unusual blowup ( think i got carried away)

Look at your results over a whole year or longer and that will tell you. 13 tourneys is nothing, you need to look at results over at least at couple of hundred tourneys. I had an outstanding 18 months but can't win bugger all in the last 4-5 months. Can't stress the words long term enough.

True. keep playing log all your entrys and winnings down and over a year the figures will speak for themselves.

i actually keep a spreadsheet of every single game i play even internet s&g (bit anal i know) although ive recently stopped playing internet as computers being thrown from windows is getting expensive.

i have found over 2 years im up both live and internet for a total of £5K

I record every flipping bean. Its important to know which games you are winning and losing. If I did not keep records I would never have realised how much I was losing in online cash games which I don't play anymore. Then you can maximise your profits and work on your game in problem areas.

This tells me that you are probably a break even player overall (depending on the field sizes for the 50-100 comps, i am imagining they got you out of overall debt) the trend is the most important thing to look at.

Long term, if you are a good player  you make $$$$$$$$$$$'s. If you are not you lose $$$$$$$. That is all.

Sicilian, if you feel like you are getting better, if you feel more confident, than you probably are getting better.
Don't rest on your laurels though, keep thinking about everything, keep asking questions, and you'll get ecen better still.

You don't necessarily need to be a 'good' player to make money (although it helps).

You just need to find players that are worse than you.

I'm a profitable player, but I'm crap.  Last year I made $200 profit.  This year, if I lose every penny in every account I've got, I'll still be up.  So I'm getting better.  But I'm not going to win any $100k tourneys soon, so I'll stick at my $10 level for the time being, thank you.

I think the important thing you said was how you feel more confidant.  If you feel capable at this level & the cash involved is significant to you, then you're doing fine.  Considering that some of the top pros fail to convince that they are long term profitable, I think you should redefine your question.

I rate you highly, and your game has certainly improved a bundle whereas of course some in that cardroom are not interested in progressing or won't, you seem to have done. No idea if you have consciously worked to improve your game or not, I suspect you have

Record keeping...honest record keeping... is the start, growing a bankroll to be able to compete selectively at higher levels and then making money there that is the next stage for you I think.

Table selection one of the most important aspects of a "good" player. My original response may be a touch flippant but i think it is pretty true, how do you keep score in poker, how much money you make relative to everyone else.

We could into semantics about the fact that someone winning at 15c/30c is not as "good" at poker as someone losing at $5/10 but the player at 5/10 cannot be described as "good" player as he is playing out of his/her depth.

I think an easy way to find out how good you are is to start posting hands and commenting on other people's hands on strat forums. Where ever you decide to post it's usually becomes clear after a while who the good posters are. If you always jump in first to answer people and your advice lines up with the good players....

Just watch out for the people who are good, authoritive writers but crap poker players who give awful advice in some long old waffley but excellently written post that makes it seem better than it really is.

But that's in the long term.

If I stick at the feeble levels I play at, then in the long term I will regularly earn $$$.

But for me to improve my skills to earn $$$$$$

I'll need to spend some time making mistakes against better players, in which case I'll be earning -$$$$ for a while until I get the hang of it.

Rather than stepping up to a higher level and losing money making mistakes against better players why not identify which areas of your game you would need to improve to step up a level while still playing at the lower levels. Then when you feel as though you have improved enough to compete at the next level you can step up and hopefully not lose as much.

You could always try changing your name half way thru so people don't get a good read on you..............  ;whistle;

observation skills and spotting patterns and norms are necessary weapons in the world of poker so when something doesn't go to plan you can spot it instantly.

She would be my number 1 example of someone who a lot of people thought was some amazing poster and then slowly realised she was talking complete bollox. If you are constantly trying to improve your game - you are a good player
If you can be comfortable laying down a good hand whether it is a bluff or not - you are a good player
If you make money year on year regardless of the natural swings - you are a good player
If you can find some way to donk off all your chips to me at Luton sometime - you are a good player

IMHO does it matter whether you are good or not. How do you measure good. Only against what the norm might be. The norm is made up of other peoples opinions. Who cares about other peoples opinions? I suppose at various times in life we all do, but over a game of cards I can honestly say I don't give a stuff what others think. Moreover I look to people who do care and try to tease chips out of them. Can't help it, it's just the way I am.

Keep playing, keep improving but most of all enjoy it.
