Title: Just read Herbert O. Yardley - The Education Of A Poker Player Post by: kvnstv on April 04, 2007, 12:50:13 PM A friend lent me a copy and it knocked my socks, read it in one sitting this morning! Its 50 years old so the strategy tends to cover games less prevalent these days and trying to make some of the suggested moves playing online draw would be suicide, like standing pat and bluffing whilst playing online draw would be a bit mental because no-ones paying attention anyway! Yardley was a really interesting character and learnt to play from a local card sharp and then spent many years as a code breaker. He learned to really understand people and there motives, some of the life lessons and the stories are really compelling.
Apologies if everybody else knows about this and im just the last to catch up as always! Title: Re: Just read Herbert O. Yardley - The Education Of A Poker Player Post by: portfolio on April 04, 2007, 01:11:34 PM agreed, probably best ever poker read.

He caught a spy by playing poker. That's better than catching a gutshot straight flush draw. What a legend!! Title: Re: Just read Herbert O. Mind you if Sklansky had written it he could have told us the precise odds of him catching his spy on the flop. He caught a spy by playing poker. That's better than catching a gutshot straight flush draw. What a legend!! Title: Re: Just read Herbert O. Yardley - The Education Of A Poker Player Post by: lazaroonie on April 04, 2007, 02:12:52 PM maybe, but Sklanksy would also remind us that we had no right being in the position of catching the spy anyway, since we were not getting the right odds on catching a spy that day. More than likely he would say there were better opportunities in the times ahead to catch a spy...
Title: Re: Just read Herbert O. Yardley - The Education Of A Poker Player Post by: TightEnd on April 04, 2007, 02:25:56 PM and at the point Sklansky discovered the spy was actually a double agent and he needed to compute not only for implied spy catching odds but reverse implied spy catching odds, he spontaneously combusted.
