Title: Poker Player Magazine Post by: AdamM on October 06, 2005, 03:11:36 PM Pressed 'the red button' last week on challenge and got my first free copy of this mag. It's ok. couple of interesting interviews/profiles, some competitions and a bit of decent begiiners advice. Dont know what the eventual price will be but if it's not too much it'll end up on my coffee table each month. one complaint though is the final article of the issue by "writer, poker player and TV presenter, Grub Smith" in this article he advocates logging on to American based poker sites with some prepared trash talk to provoke and insult American players. IDIOT. The main reason I moved to Ladbrokes was the absence of rude Americans. encouraging Brits to go out of there way to antagonise them in the first place is bad. Am I alone in really not liking this Grub Smith geezer?

Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: Robert HM on October 06, 2005, 03:16:48 PM Not the most pleasant of advice, perhaps he has had a bad experience on Party or wherever. As for liking him or not, well, even if I had read the article I couldn't say, I've never met him. Perhaps he is writing in a way that is meant to be provocative and hopefully create a debate, who knows?
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: Longy on October 06, 2005, 03:21:23 PM Yeah seems like a reasonable read from what i have read so far, not quite cardplayer or 2+2 but a different market i suppose. As for Grub Smith's piece it is a lazy lads mag piece of writing that really should be ignored. I have actually played against him online and he seemed quite a nice bloke to be fair.
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: Wayneo on October 06, 2005, 03:24:54 PM Im not a fan of advocating americans, for me I find them the best to play. However getting busted deep into the $500k guaranteed tourn on party the other night, with some guy calling a raise pre-flop with 77, and moving in on the 9,9,2 flop and rivering my JJ, that was slightly annoying! I had already spent the $100k in my head!
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: TightEnd on October 06, 2005, 03:26:56 PM Wayne, we've all done that...two tables to go, look at the payout structrue in the lobby when KABOSH, the house crumbles around you....
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: Rod Paradise on October 06, 2005, 03:40:44 PM Grub Smith is a professional idiot... anyone whose read his stuff in whichever of the 'lads mags' he's writing for now will know that. Fair play to him, he can be amusing (I did chortle at a couple of the insults), but anything he writes is from the point of view of doing something he shouldn't to get a laugh, not serious advice.
Re the magazine, I'll reserve judgement..... Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: redsimon on October 06, 2005, 04:15:50 PM Got my copy through the post today. Seems OK and as it was free....value for money. Not sure if I'd pay for it though.
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: Royal Flush on October 06, 2005, 04:18:51 PM I got on well with Grub at the 2004 WHU, where he was presenting for the TV coverage.
I thought he was a really nice guy and was keen to learn more about poker, he at that point was playing but wanted to up his game so to speak. I havent read any of his stuff but just as a person he is a good guy. Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: AdamM on October 06, 2005, 04:20:48 PM personally I like the idea of a lads mag style poker mag. I actually find most poker reading hard going. I have to read in small busts, not because the info isnt useful, but because the writing style is usually so dull.
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: redsimon on October 06, 2005, 04:22:14 PM I have to read in small busts, That lass from Tuesday at the Gala still on your mind? ;D Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: AdamM on October 06, 2005, 04:22:36 PM I wasnt commenting on him as a person, but as a writer he comes across as an idiot and I don't like his opinion on encouraging trash talking online.
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: AdamM on October 06, 2005, 04:23:18 PM I have to read in small busts, That lass from Tuesday at the Gala still on your mind? ;D Simon, please. As for grub calling him idiot bit strong hes making a living even though he likes to shock. alot of people call us poker players dont mean we are idiots pokerram Maybe I wasn't clear - the guy writes OK & can be funny - BUT his persona in his articles before he started on Poker Player was - well a professional idiot - ie no challenge to stupid/embarrassing.... wasn't having a personal dig - just saying all his stuff that I've read needed to be taken with a pinch of salt. Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: pokerram on October 06, 2005, 05:03:33 PM maybe i took you wrong rod we apparently see him as very much the same sorry if i misunderstood you no offence meant pokerram
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: 4dam on October 06, 2005, 05:17:54 PM i had the pleasure of meeting grub at poker den a few weeks ago and got say his went out of his way to chat to me and pals. yes his a jack the lad but least he takes the time to have a chat. unlike others there (bepe from eastenders)

Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: AdamM on October 06, 2005, 05:20:27 PM have people who've met him read his piece in Poker Player, and would they like to comment?
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: jezza777 on October 06, 2005, 05:31:27 PM In his book Killer Poker - Crushing the Online Game , john Vorhaus advocates diong everything possible to wind players up using the chatbox. I dont do it myself but you make money from people making mistakes against you so I can see the point.
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: AdamM on October 06, 2005, 07:43:23 PM Then John Vorhaus is an idiot too. manners, class, human decency, call it what you will, the boundries don't change when you sit down at a poker table, real or vitrual. Don't say anything in a chat box you wouldn't say to someones face, and those that do say it to peoples face, when the game ends the slate ISN'T wiped clean.
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: Ironside on October 06, 2005, 08:16:00 PM i dont normally use the chat to wind people up but when it came to the blonde events i do as i think the money we are playing for isnt important its the game itself that matters and to jokingly wind people up makes it very funny
many will have noticed during the last event on crypto i was kind of a bully in chat all with in reason but it help my game so i am personally all for the homourous table wind ups as they help me win Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: snoopy1239 on October 06, 2005, 08:17:46 PM i dont normally use the chat to wind people up but when it came to the blonde events i do as i think the money we are playing for isnt important its the game itself that matters and to jokingly wind people up makes it very funny many will have noticed during the last event on crypto i was kind of a bully in chat all with in reason but it help my game so i am personally all for the homourous table wind ups as they help me win yeah, i got a bit of that. revenge will be sweet... ;) :D Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: Robert HM on October 06, 2005, 08:21:09 PM Right just got in, Poker Player mag on the carpet, not sure it is worth opening now ::)

Not read JV's book but enjoyed his blogs UB... I think this online abuse can be counter productive. I tend only to bite back. i.e the UB C5 trny where the septics antics tested the patience of a saint :D It can drive people away. I've seen suckouts in cash games get a torrent of abuse and after a short time the game either breaks up or the fish stops playing badly. Counter productive...not to say you won't see me vent online every so often ;D Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: redsimon on October 06, 2005, 08:23:47 PM Right just got in, Poker Player mag on the carpet, not sure it is worth opening now ::) Its not too bad. Had to chuckle at the Ulliott interview. So many factual errors :o Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: Robert HM on October 06, 2005, 08:36:15 PM I'll read it on the train tomorrow then ;D
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: Robert HM on October 23, 2005, 01:25:15 AM Hey I got a mention in the latest Poker Player Magazine, it talks about their on line comp and the final table, they had 110 runners, saying:
"Massive chip leader The_Brief blew his stack to finsih 6th" now that hasn't healed the blooming wound! Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: redsimon on October 23, 2005, 10:05:50 AM I was going to mention it yesterday but decided it was too cruel... 0:-)
Title: Re: Poker Player Magazine Post by: thelodger on October 23, 2005, 10:45:11 AM How do you get time to read a magazine? The only time I get is when I am in the bath, it goes soggy in the shower (the Magazine that is).
