Pressed 'the red button' last week on challenge and got my first free copy of this mag. It's ok. couple of interesting interviews/profiles, some competitions and a bit of decent begiiners advice. Dont know what the eventual price will be but if it's not too much it'll end up on my coffee table each month. one complaint though is the final article of the issue by "writer, poker player and TV presenter, Grub Smith" in this article he advocates logging on to American based poker sites with some prepared trash talk to provoke and insult American players. IDIOT. The main reason I moved to Ladbrokes was the absence of rude Americans. encouraging Brits to go out of there way to antagonise them in the first place is bad. Am I alone in really not liking this Grub Smith geezer?

Not the most pleasant of advice, perhaps he has had a bad experience on Party or wherever. As for liking him or not, well, even if I had read the article I couldn't say, I've never met him. Perhaps he is writing in a way that is meant to be provocative and hopefully create a debate, who knows?

Yeah seems like a reasonable read from what i have read so far, not quite cardplayer or 2+2 but a different market i suppose. As for Grub Smith's piece it is a lazy lads mag piece of writing that really should be ignored. I have actually played against him online and he seemed quite a nice bloke to be fair.

Im not a fan of advocating americans, for me I find them the best to play. However getting busted deep into the $500k guaranteed tourn on party the other night, with some guy calling a raise pre-flop with 77, and moving in on the 9,9,2 flop and rivering my JJ, that was slightly annoying! I had already spent the $100k in my head!

Grub Smith is a professional idiot... anyone whose read his stuff in whichever of the 'lads mags' he's writing for now will know that. Fair play to him, he can be amusing (I did chortle at a couple of the insults), but anything he writes is from the point of view of doing something he shouldn't to get a laugh, not serious advice.

Re the magazine, I'll reserve judgement.....

Got my copy through the post today. Seems OK and as it was free....value for money. Not sure if I'd pay for it though.

I got on well with Grub at the 2004 WHU, where he was presenting for the TV coverage.

I thought he was a really nice guy and was keen to learn more about poker, he at that point was playing but wanted to up his game so to speak.

I havent read any of his stuff but just as a person he is a good guy.

personally I like the idea of a lads mag style poker mag. I actually find most poker reading hard going. I have to read in small busts, not because the info isnt useful, but because the writing style is usually so dull.

I wasnt commenting on him as a person, but as a writer he comes across as an idiot and I don't like his opinion on encouraging trash talking online.
