Yes, we're ready for a much-more-action-packed-than-expected day of H.O.R.S.E. here in the Rio, which should be underway momentarily, with a star-studded field* of 127 players... It's Homer's first day of WSOP updating, so let's collectively hope that he's got his comfy shoes on!

*This is the phrase required by the Press Office to be used at least once per 24 hour period, Benjo assures me.

Pictured as just a floating white cowboy hat below is Doyle Brunson, whom I saw in a hand with Gabe Kaplan and Sherkhan Fernoud.  Sitting between them, they were dealt:

Kaplan:  X X 2d 9d
Brunson:  X X 7h 9c
Farnoud:  X X 2s 7s     Check to Farnoud from both players, who bet, receiving two calls.   Then came a 5d, 2d and 4s respectively - unsurprisingly Farnoud bet his three little spades when he got another double check.  Kaplan passed but Brunson took another card - the Jd.  Farnoud bet his new 8s, and now the behatted legend bowed out of the pot.

Andy Bloch has knocked out Brandon Adams.

Andy held 8d Ahrt Qh 5d face up with Qd Qc concealed amongst his other three cards which beat Adam's Kd 2c 6s 3d with Ks 3s concealed.

A big four-way pot got to 7th street, Ivey bet 6th street and all three players called.

Erick Lindgren (?) (?) 3d Jc 4c 3s (?)

Phil Ivey (?) (?) 7c 4h 6c 7s (?)

David Singer (?) (?) Td Qc 9s 4d (?)

Kirk Morrison (?) (?) Kc 5h 6d Ahrt (?)

River:

Ivey and Lindgren check, Singer bets 5k, Morrison makes it 10k and Ivey and Lindgren pass and Singer calls, shows Tc Th Qd for the boat which takes the pot. Morrison mucks

Isabelle Mercier wins a chunk off Soheil Shamseddin, he bet all the way on his 8s 3d 3h 5c board and Isabelle called him down with Qs 9s Ac 5d before raising on the river and showing Qh Qc 6h (not sure when she hit the third Queen) but Max Pescatori had the case queen as his up card, so I'm guessing she might have caught her 3rd queen on the river.

I have found that if you go and stand by the empty rail in the break, then when it's over you're ringside and can see what's going on!  Here are the first few hands on a couple of tables I was watching as the newest Hold'em round (blinds 1,500/3,000 limit 3k/6k) kicked off:

Shortstack Tad Jurgens comes in preflop for a raise, and with Barry Greenstein re-raising it looks like this could be the start of a make-or-break pot for him.  A substantial portion of his stack is now in on the Js Jc Th flop, and he bets, called by Greenstein.  The Ad comes on the turn and it looks like the rest of his stack now fits in (i.e. is under 6k), but Barry doesn't knock him out, passing and giving it up right there.
_____________________________________

Eli Elezra raises to 6k preflop, and finds a re-raise behind him.  Call.  Flop:  9c 6d 9s and the chip leader check-folds to Mr. G's bet, showing A-x, where 'x' didn't look that painty.

Jesus vs. Barry:

Chris Ferguson sees a flop in position against Barry Greenstein:  7s Jc 9h  The 6 foot 5 guy in front of me moved to block my view of the flop betting, so let's skip past that to the Jd turn.  That I know Ferguson bet, when it was checked to him, while Greenstein called.
River:  5s  check-check and Chris Ferguson's 3c 3s were shown first, winning the pot.

Any updates on Ed Pelligrini?

 Ahrt Aspades

He's not on the list of players still in, I'm afraid.

This is an outrage, could he be under a pseudonym?

Mr Hornswaggle, I have to object to your latest unlikely hero. This man passed aces twice on the bubble of a WPT event. That is not a heroic act, but cowardly and a disgrace to poker. I would hate to see him on the bubble of a $50k HORSE event.Back to Ireland, on your bike.

Cheers for the updates guys, great as ever. Can we have updates on the captain, Tony G, who has been surprisingly quiet so far this year.

Er.... I strongly believe he's been eliminated.  As has Jennifer Harman, who slowly descended from cheerful to resigned over the course of the two days.  Homer saw her doing the Walk of Out just a moment ago during the Omaha round.

John Juanda (pictured) would be one of my tips for this, or any tournament in fact.  He just won a pretty chunky Razz pot too - this is what happened, from what I could see:

In order of acting, there were:
Juanda:  X X 4s 5d
David Grey:  X X 4h Jc
Rafi Amit:  X X Kc Aspades
Checks to Rafi Amit, and then following calls from brought Juanda the Qs, Grey the 5s and Amit the 3h.  Now John Juanda bet out (8k) and received slightly slower calls from both of his opponents.  They all get dealt Tens on 6th street.

With just one card to come, the betting gets interesting - Juanda checks, Grey bets out (8k), call from Amit, then Juanda raises, with the third bet coming back from Grey.  Rafi Amit calls in the middle and they all get their final down cards.

Check to Rafi Amit, who bets - Juanda thinks for a while and calls, while David Grey must not have liked what he saw on the river as he folds.  As soon as he sees his opponent call his bet, Amit just chucks his hand away, handing the chunky pot to the last man standing - who flashes what looked like the Ahrt 8d and something else as he scooped it.

Now:

John Juanda  270k
David Grey    105k
Rafi Amit       140k

Phil Hellmuth was in every pot here I watched this level.

First he bet every street against Chip Reese and Raymer on a Td 5h 4s 4d 5s board, clearing Reese off the flop, but Raymer called him down but mucked when he was shown 8h 6h 5c 4c

Reese and Hellmuth continued to tangle, in a pot which Helmuth had 3-bet preflop and also involved Cyndy Violette.

Flop:

2c 7s Qh

Reese bets 3k, Hellmuth makes it 6k, Violette folds, Reese calls.

Turn:

Jc

Reese bets 6k, Hellmuth calls.

River:

3c

Reese checks, Hellmuth checks.

Hellmuth:

Aspades Ad 3d Th for an overpair but no low.

Reese:

Ac 2h 8h Qs for two pair and a A-2-3-7-8 low which scoops the pot.

A couple of hands and they're tangling again. This time Hellmuth is betting at the 9h 2d 8s 5c 9d board the whole way and Chip Reese is check/calling him down.

Hellmuth:

Ad 3c 8c Ts for Nines and Eights with the nut-low (A-2-3-5-8)

Reese:

Ac 3h 7s Qh for Nines, with the nut-low (A-2-3-5-8)

Hellmuth takes three quarters.

The Omaha Hi/Lo is my favourite of these games, but to me, the Stud 8 looks the most challenging to play.

Steve Zolotow is OUT.

Howard Lederer was betting all the way and Zolotow and Laak were calling.

Lederer:

(?) (?) Td 8s Tc Ad (?)

Zolotow:

(?) (?) 6s 5h Qd 5d (?)

Laak:

(?) (?) 3c 7h Kh 6h (?)

Lederer's back three were Th 8h and Jd giving him Tens full which takes the high half.

Zolotow had 3d 4c and the Kc for a 7 high straight and a 7-6-5-4-3 for the low.

Phil Laak was holding Ahrt 5s and the Ac, for Aces for the high and A-3-5-6-7 which pips Zolotow for the low.

Incidentally, it seems the dealers are having trouble with the similarly coloured chips, Howard Lederer was almost given a stack of 5k chips which included a couple of 500 chips.

The action is really starting to speed up now as there have been at least three eliminations in the past 20 minutes.  NoflopsHomer saw one, while Keith Lehr didn't make it through the Stud 8/b level either - Daniel Shak and John Hennigan splitting his remaining stack.  Also an Insider Informant tells me that it was David Singer who just knocked out Williamson, making my earlier picture post just in the nick of time...

Elsewhere short stack Tom Schneider had his all-in moment against David Williams, but managed to scoop, it looked like, on one of the final cards dealt keeping him in the tournament.  It looks weird to someone used to updating NLHE tournaments when someone gets it all-in, er, pre, in Stud, with three more cards being dealt to each player face up and then a 7th down card which is immediately flipped too.  So much to absorb... Stud not a game for those with dodgy short-term memories.

I've just gotten the boot from the tournament area. There's a a class system here, (you won't have heard of this in Britain), and we are on the bottom rung.

"You can stand behind the rail, or two tables away from the action and report from there," I get told. With the rail being six people deep and the distance of two tables away being even further than that, it's sounds pretty damn difficult.

Anyway, they're now on the Limit Hold 'em section and I think Jen is trying to sneak in down the other side.

Doyle Brunson has been eliminated - I was just counting his short stack when he got it in the middle in a threeway pot of hi-lo Omaha.  I think his actual eliminator (Raymer was the third player in the hand) was John Hanson, who raised Raymer off on the river with the board reading:
6d Aspades 8h 4c 2h
Doyle Brunson showed:  2c 4d 3h Jc
But he was knocked out by the A-3-5-6 which had got there on the river.  Scoop.

Marco Traniello is OUT.

Short stacked, he took his chance in the Razz against Huck Seed's raise with the 3d despite holding a Ts as his upcard, all the chips were in by the fourth street and dealt so quickly I could only see the final hands.

Traniello:

Ts 9d 7h 6h 2d for a Ten-low

Seed:

7d 6s 5d 3d Ahrt for a Seven-low.

Though next hand Eli Elezra manages to bluff Huck Seed off a pot showing a Jack-low on 5th street.

Snoops' favourite Comic Book Guy, Todd Brunson is also OUT.

Erik Seidel is moving along nicely, it helped here when he picked up a 7d on fourth street to go with his 4c upcard against Greg Raymer whose 6s was besmirched by the Qd and led to the former WSOP champion folding to a bet.

Counted some chips.  You'd think I'd be better at it after two years of doing so professionally, but I still feel obliged to add that these may not be accurate.  The main issue I am having with them is the colour coding of the 25k and the 5k chips - the former being pink and brown, the latter being the same shade of pink, plus brown and baby blue.  It's hard to explain.  I wonder if these will be the Main Event chips?

Rob Hollink      180k
Bruno Fitoussi    380k
Gavin Smith       40k
Isabelle Mercier   55k
Annie Duke       310k
Max Pescatori     250k
Phil Ivey            180k
Erick Lindgren    175k  (probably - messy stacker, back to me)
David Singer       245k
Phil Hellmuth     160k

Hellmuth to Lindgren:  "I just lost 100k conflip..." to Kristy Gazes, in Razz.
Lindgren to Hellmuth:  "It's not too late to buy insurance."  (Pronounced insurance.)

This, by the way, is what just the section of the Rio Amazon Room devoted to the H.O.R.S.E. tournament looks like at the moment.  Note the double rail thronged with spectators whom I catch saying some odd stuff - "That guy, Phil Laak, he never takes his sunglasses off.  Never." - "This is a HORSE tournament?  Is that poker?" - "There he is, oh my GOD, it's Negreanu!" "I think it's No Limit, or, wait, it's $50,000" etc. etc.  There are better ones, but I should measure them out over the full five days...

Huck Seed raised preflop with the Aspades showing but Eli Elezra re-raised despite his upcard being the 2c, Seed caught a 7h and check called Elezra, who had hit a seemingly unhelpful 8h, but once Seed caught the Ahrt against Elezra's Th and called another bet, it was clear that the former WSOP ME champion wasn't going to give up and the remaining streets were checked down with neither player seemingly hitting anything. Elezra quickly mucked after the river leaving Seed showing just the Aces to take a chunky pot down.

Phil Hellmuth has just been moved into the ominously empty seat between Eli Elezra and Allen Kessler.  That table saw Justin Bonomo getting the best of the last few minutes of Stud 8/b - one hand:

Huck Seed was the in-position bettor, with the 4s 9s, then the Qd and Td showing.
Justin Bonomo held X X 6s 7s Qc 3d
Eli Elezra had come along as far as X X 6d Jd 4d Qs

The river-card saw Justin announcing, "A seven [low] and a pair of Sevens..." which was enough to take the whole thing from Seed.  He got the next pot too after Allen Kessler gave it up on fourth street.

Cyndy Violette has lost a couple of decent sized pots, first being check/raised from 16k to 32k by Kenny Tran on Jc 2s 2c Jd board and passing after a dwell.

She then check called Mike Matusow down on a 8h 3h Ac 3d 9s board, Matusow showing Ad Th, Cyndy flashed the Ahrt and mucked.

The game changes to Razz - 2k ante, 3k bring in with 10k/20k the bet size.  We can ignore no longer that these are limits which take chunks out of healthy stacks.  With under 20k Cyndy Violette was all-in immediately after the new round was announced, showing the 6d.  A crowd surged forward, and I saw no more cards appearing in front of her or her opponent.  But I did see the long drawn-out hushed squeeze as her final card was dealt, with a great "phew" as she liked what she saw and scooped the pot, much to the delight of her fans on the rail.  Still in trouble though, Homer has gone down to vulture.

R

Hellmuth raises showing a 4d,

Seed calls with a 8d,

Hellmuth picks up a 5c and Seed gets a 3h, both check on fourth street.

Hellmuth pairs with a 4c whilst Seed bets when he gets a 4s, Hellmuth calls.

6th street brings an Aspades for Hellmuth and an ugly Kh for Seed. Hellmuth bets 16k, and Seed goes into the tank, dwelling for a while since the bet represents a good portion of his stack. He eventually folds and Hellmuth shows 6c 2c giving 'The Poker Brat' a current low of 6c 5c 4c 2c Aspades which I suspect was way ahead of whatever Seed had.

Justin Bonomo then calls a raise from Jon Hennigan and check calls until 5th street when he starts betting out instead.

Bonomo:

(?) (?) 8d 2h 9s 4d

Hennigan:

(?) (?) 7d 5c Jh Qc

Hennigan instantly mucked, slightly disgusted that 5th and 6th street had destroyed his hand.

Bill Edler is OUT, and play has now ended for the day.

And they've called Time on the H.O.R.S.E Day Two, with 52 players still remaining.

So, it's been a bit of an uphill one today, but plenty going on to watch in this most prestigious of events, if you can get to the front - and it continues tomorrow at 2pm (10pm UK time).

But for now...
