Title: Re: Tell me something I don't know.... Post by: kinboshi on July 06, 2007, 10:51:42 AM Fugu is Japanese for pufferfish, and it contains a deadly toxin (mostly in its liver and gonads apparently). It's a delicacy in Japan.
Quote from: wikipedia Since 1958, only specially licensed chefs can prepare and sell fugu to the public. The fugu apprentice needs a two- or three-year apprenticeship before being allowed to take an official test. The test consists of a written test, a fish identification test, and a practical test of preparing fugu and then eating it. Only 30% of the applicants pass the test. This, of course, does not mean that 70% die from poisoning; rather, they made a small mistake in the long and complicated procedure of preparing the dish. Due to this rigorous examination process, it is generally safe to eat the sliced fugu sold in restaurants or markets. While fugu connoisseurs love the taste and the texture of the fugu, many people actually find it rather bland and tasteless. Some professional chefs prepare the fish so that there is a minute amount of poison in the meat, giving a prickling feeling and numbness on the tongue and the lips. Title: Re: Tell me something I don't know.... Post by: bone1986 on July 06, 2007, 10:07:16 PM Despite what is often maintained, the speed of light isn’t a constant. It only reaches its maximum 300,000 kilometres a second in a vacuum. When light passes through different media its speed slows. The slowest speed recorded is through sodium at -272 C during which the speed of light fell to 60kph – about the speed of a bicycle. Travelling through a diamond its speed is halved to 130,000 kilometres a second
Astonishingly a team of scientist at Harvard managed to bring light to a complete halt by shining it through a Bose Einstein condensate of the element rubidium. Light is invisible to the naked eye. It is only when it hits something that it be comes visible. If light were visible it would appear as a mist between you and whatever you were viewing. Title: Re: Tell me something I don't know.... You see an object in front of you: your computer speaker. You see what it is: a computer speaker. You see where it is: beside your computer. Your brain is aware of these things. But the notion of what it is and where it is are processed by two totally different parts of the brain. Thus some blind people, while unable to tell you what you are holding, can, if asked, reach out and touch it. Bizaaare. The teacher to prove his point turned on the lights so the room was bright,, then held a torch at floor level (below a desk) and turned it on,,, You could not see the beam of light, you could only see it when it reflected of the ceiling and was reflected in a straight line to your eye....
