Title: Harry Potter Post by: The Baron on July 18, 2007, 03:50:34 PM In just over two days the final Harry Potter book is out ending a ten year legacy from JK Rowling of a story spanning seven years.
I must admit I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked the latter books as they became darker. The depths of her writing really is quite remarkable, quite easily on a par wth JRR Tolkien and the world (including dates, languages, histories, maps and traditions) he created in his mind. JK is now a billionairess from the series which has been written in mulpitple languages with two more films still to come as well as theme parks planned for the US, Europe and Asia. The books, originally written for children have been read by people of all sexes and ages in all four corners of the globe. I like it when nice people from humble beginnings do well. I take my hat off to JK. Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: TightEnd on July 18, 2007, 04:45:44 PM yup, the lady done well. I've read them all, though not quite in the "queue up in Tesco's at midnight" category, they've all been well worth reading
Remarkably popular, took my kids see the latest film last weekend, and it worked for adults and kids alike. I got in to them on holiday a few years ago, great reading for lounging about. Haven't pre-ordered the new book but I expect my local Sainsburys will have more copies than they know what to do with so I'll pop out and grab a copy.
Actually quite agree about the Tolkien comparison. Some of the stuff she has created has been amazing. Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: Dewi_cool on July 18, 2007, 04:53:58 PM I agree with Rodney the recent offering is indeed poo

The release of one coincided with my eldest's birthday, yes I was in the queue, well would have been if the other residents of Caterham had shown any interest. Oh and the films are a neat bit of cinematography. I must be one of the few people who have never read, nor watched any of them.... Save them for desperation when I'm TRULY bored!! Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: Graham C on July 19, 2007, 12:18:29 AM They're great books, there's nothing to dislike about them.
Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: JungleCat03 on July 19, 2007, 12:53:05 AM I only ever read the first harry potter book which whilst it was amiable and pleasant to read was not well written or quite imaginative enough to merit the worldwide acclaim it seemed to receive.
Having said that, the true harry potter fans have told me the first book is probably the worst one, and that the series develops much deeper and more complex themes as it progresses. I am PS I have the utmost respect for JK Rowling whose life story is fascinating and her path to success is an amazing story in itself.... Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: CelticGeezeer on July 19, 2007, 01:02:50 AM Liked all the books and all the films and would recommend them to all.
Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: KingPoker on July 19, 2007, 01:12:13 AM Just got back now from the cinema and i think its a great film, a hell of a lot darker than the others but still well directed and a great piece of cinematography.
Wasnt as good as last film though purely because i managed to wangle some tickets for the missus and I for the midnight showing of the goblet of fire on its release date so was cool watching that then coming out of cinema about 3 o clock on a foggy night and letting you mind wander (my hands wandered later!) I never ever dreamt of watching them before the gf persuaded me too and havent looked back since. Havent read books yet as would like to get the complete set which im sure they will be bringing out soon and just keep on reading! Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: Sheriff Fatman on July 19, 2007, 01:22:53 AM Also, I wouldn't judge the books by watching the films. With the exception of the first one, they've had to cut out huge chunks of the books in the films.
The films are enjoyable in their own right, but nowhere near as enjoyable as the books. I spent several years taking the mickey out of all these adults who were reading 'kiddie books'. Oh how they laughed at me when I got totally hooked on them after being dragged kicking and screaming to the first film. Just working my way through them once again in preparation for this weekend! Sad git I hear you say? Yep, that's me! Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: TheChipPrince on July 19, 2007, 09:25:37 AM Lord of the Rings>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Harry Potter.... terrible but can be addictive. Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: Jamier-Host on July 19, 2007, 12:58:07 PM Very well done to JK for her success I must be one of the few people who have never read, nor watched any of them.... Save them for desperation when I'm TRULY bored!! Not read any of the books but saw the first film at the cinema and wasn't too impressed. Then again it's not really my thing I don't think as I fell asleep in two of the LOTR films too. On a positive note though, I woke up both times and they were still walking towards some big mountain so didn't miss much. Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: dino1980 on July 19, 2007, 04:23:05 PM I've read all of the books and seen the first three films. I think the series as a whole has gone downhill since the fourth book which is IMO the best - it had the right mix of darkness, action and hell it wasn't 700 pages long - the fifth and sixth books seemed to take hundreds of pages to get going and just weren't as exciting. JK is a smart girl to end the series before it jumps the shark.
Under/Over on how many 'major characters' snuff it. Can't see Harry getting rubbed out, as that closes a few too many doors. Title: Re: Harry Potter Post by: KarmaDope on July 21, 2007, 02:19:25 AM I've read the new book already, and to be fair it's probably the worst of the lot, and I HATED Order of the Phoenix. The film was, well, ok. The good parts were it looks great, with some nice visual effects and this translates the magic of harry potter's world nicely. Of course, the cast is filled with a plethora of british talent.... gary oldman, ralph fiennes , robbie coltrane etc but I have to say I think even at this early age it appears as though Daniel Radcliffe has little talent for acting. Considering he's the hero of the piece, it was nearly impossible to empathise with his wooden, banal Harry and this hurt the film somewhat. Miichael gambon seemed to be going through the motions a little, but Gary Oldman is good and Imelda Staunton puts it the best performance as the stuffy, slightly evil, ministry-appointed teacher. Even I was rooting for her to get her commuppance. There are many plot holes in the film and non harry potter fans will find several aspects of the plot confusing and contrived. Overall though it just about hangs together and although it will mainly appeal to children and harry potter fans id give it a 6/10.
