Title: Computerish question Post by: RED-DOG on August 14, 2007, 08:23:11 PM How much would you say the avarage mult-tabling, blonde-browsing bod downloads in a month?
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: Graham C on August 14, 2007, 08:44:17 PM Just from playing poker? Shouldn't be a lot, few hundred meg at most I'd have thought.
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: kinboshi on August 14, 2007, 08:56:16 PM Browsing and playing poker, like Graham said, not a lot at all. Downloading music and films (and other stuff like that) is what racks up the downloads.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/down2home.html Download this piece of freeware, and then you'll know how much you're using on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. Just the job, thank you. Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: lucky_scrote on August 15, 2007, 01:06:44 AM if you were playing 4 tables and browsing forums all day every day then next to nothing, my guess is about 30MB a day (not much).
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RED-DOG on August 15, 2007, 01:11:18 AM So far 109MB in 3 hours playing 3 tables and browsing blonde
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RichEO on August 15, 2007, 01:24:20 AM So far 109MB in 3 hours playing 3 tables and browsing blonde I suspect you have other stuff running, eg windows update, adobe update, email checking, virus updater. If you turn any or all of this off it will lower your usage. You can also disable pictures while browsing if you want which will speed up browsing as well as lower data usage. I assume you are figuring out which tariff for a 3g card or something? You can get bandwidth limiters I think, sort of a firewall thing that stops outgoing data unless you authorise it, I don't remember what it is off the top of my head if you are interested and can't find it, let me know and I'll have a search for it. Yes, Vodafone USB 3G broadband doobry. £30pm, 3GB fair usage limit. (Does that include upload as well as download?) Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RED-DOG on August 15, 2007, 02:13:10 AM 10MB 1st 2 hours, 20MB 2nd 2 hours. :dontask:
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RichEO on August 15, 2007, 02:19:54 AM Are you checking how much data you are using on the 3G modem now or on you broadband before you move to the 3G? I'm pretty sure the vodafone connection manager has a built in data usage monitor.
If your planning to use the 3G contract for all your usage then 3GB could be close to what you use. If only some of your usage is over 3G then you should be fine. Only some of my usage will be via 3G Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: Graham C on August 15, 2007, 08:19:35 AM Uploads are counted too, yes.
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: fearisthekey on August 15, 2007, 08:37:56 AM sounds like you may have a virus/spyware. Let us know if you need toolz.
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: kinboshi on August 15, 2007, 08:58:21 AM Yes, that usage does sound a bit high for what you're doing. Unless you're going through the Youtube thread....
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RED-DOG on August 15, 2007, 09:11:52 AM I think that usage is accurate because when I stop playing and browsing it drops to almost nothing.
I used over 100MB in the first 2 hours but have only used about 8MB per hour since. Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: kinboshi on August 15, 2007, 09:15:01 AM Did you download any video during that time?
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RED-DOG on August 15, 2007, 09:18:39 AM Did you download any video during that time? No, not that I can recall. I may have opened a youtube thread though, I will be more vigilant today and report back. Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: kinboshi on August 15, 2007, 09:23:22 AM Shouldn't affect the amount you download unless you're downloading or streaming video or music. I suppose you could also be downloading lots of large images as well - but that's some going still. Did you download any software updates?
Oh - of course sending and receiving large files via email also quickly adds up. Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RED-DOG on August 15, 2007, 09:25:01 AM Shouldn't affect the amount you download unless you're downloading or streaming video or music. Not intentionally. although it might have done it automatically. I used over 100MB in the first 2 hours but have only used about 8MB per hour since. Yes, probably accurate. As I said before, probably some programs updating. They will all try and do this when they see an internet connection for the 1st time in a while, was this the case? Windows update can easily use 50MB+ in a minute or 2 if there happens to be an update available right when you connect. If you just connected (say via a usb speedtouch modem) and started to log your data usage, rather than you were connected for a little while already then started to log it, I think you would get a higher 1st hour (or half hour) reading. Did any of your poker softwares update? Could have used an extra 10+ MB. At £30pm it looks like it will be a viable option. Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: kinboshi on August 15, 2007, 10:50:35 AM Monitor it for a week - and you'll have a better idea of the average usage.
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RED-DOG on August 15, 2007, 10:57:18 AM Monitor it for a week - and you'll have a better idea of the average usage. Will do. Just a thought, could it count stuff downloaded to oher computers via my router? Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: kinboshi on August 15, 2007, 11:23:36 AM Monitor it for a week - and you'll have a better idea of the average usage. Will do. Just a thought, could it count stuff downloaded to oher computers via my router? No, I'm 99.9% sure that it only monitors what comes in to (and goes out of) the actual PC you're using. Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: WackyDUK on August 15, 2007, 11:41:33 AM Yesterday was Microsoft patch Tuesday, their once a month patch delivery.
So if you are running Windows Update it will have downloaded that in the background Red. Wednesday - Early closing day in the shops. Friday - Fish for dinner. (Makes a change from pancakes) If you find 3Gb a month isnt enough T-Mobile offer the same with an option of 10Gb for £44 a month. And yes Microsoft have regular monthly update to fix all the issues identified and fixed. If you cant sleep and have exhausted all other forms of passing the time.. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-aug.mspx Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: ericstoner on September 01, 2007, 05:35:34 PM Rich, i've noticed that 3 are offering one of these USM jobbies for £25 per mth for 7 GBS.
Is that good to get? Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RichEO on September 01, 2007, 06:21:28 PM Rich, i've noticed that 3 are offering one of these USB jobbies for £25 per mth for 7 GBS. Is that good to get? The USB modem is a nice little device, easy to set up and fast download speeds. That contract is OK, but you might be able to get better. Do you know if it's a 12 month or 18 month contract you would be stuck with too? I have just had a look on ebay and the USB modem can be had from one sellet for £91 (he has 4 available) from other sellers it is going at £150+! So if it's just for occaisional use I'd buy one of those and use it pay as you go (it will be locked to vodafone). And if there was a month where you are going to use it a lot, you can set up a contract with them, then cancel for next month as you didn't take a handset (in this case modem) from them. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UK-Vodafone-3g-Broadband-Mobile-Connect-USB-Modem_W0QQitemZ170145099316QQihZ007QQcategoryZ96912QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Depends on how much you are going to use it. And I'll take a look at the contacts on offer, just I expect these modems to sell fast, they are underpriced IMO. But also, you can get 3G cards for £20ish that work nicely too. Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: ericstoner on September 01, 2007, 08:11:03 PM Thx for that M8. 3 want a 12 mth contract, aND YOU GET A FREE MODEM FROM THEM IF U SIGN UP BY 5/9/07.
I need a contract cos i'm away from home base, three times a week most of the day. what do u think. Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RED-DOG on September 01, 2007, 09:35:04 PM Yes, I think you need a contract Brendan. If you go for Vodafone tell them you want the business tarriff, £25 a month.
The cheapest way is to buy it online (Don't take out any insurance and refuse to pay a delivery charge) Before you use it for the first time you have to Contact Voda (Or pop into a shop) and ask them to activate it and lift the adult content bar so that you can access poker sites. http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatch/Portal/appmanager/vodafone/wrp?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=template09&pageID=BS_0201 Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: Robert HM on September 01, 2007, 10:15:20 PM I have been watching with interest as I am going to need one soon.
So it boils down to the £49 outlay for the modem and £25 per month for up to 3GB 3GB would more than cover poker and forum surfing for the month, as long as you keep away from downloading music +/or movies Is that about right Red? Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: RED-DOG on September 01, 2007, 10:24:19 PM The modem is free on contract.
Title: Re: Computerish question Post by: ericstoner on September 01, 2007, 10:38:53 PM Thx Tom , think i'm sorted/

They launched a while ago in Ireland and all was great to start with but then their network got oversubscribed and crippled.
Hopefully the same thing won't happen on their UK network, but who knows. Maybe something to think about if you are going to sign up for an 18month contract with them! The info I got was from here: http://www.talk3g.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4417 |
