So there we were, Harmony and I enjoying a lovely Sunday afternnon together.  All is going tickety-boo until the end of "Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves", when that god awful song by the Canadian smugness that is Bryan Adams plays over the end credits.

The trauma is compounded, when after complaining like any right-minded person would, I point out my liking of Bruce Springsteen.

Harmony, apparently, "Dislikes" Springsteen.

So, is that Two years of our lives down the drain or is reconciliation possible ?

While we "Discuss" this, who in your opinion is the better singer/songwriter ?

Not a huge fan of either, but this isn't really a contest is it?

True, Adams could not possibly provide any competition for Springsteen.

Is that the 2nd ever thing we have agreed on ?

Bryan Adams easily better than Springsteen who has had only a handful of hits. Go up to anyone in the street and ask them to name their favourite Springsteen songs and they will go Born in the USA, Philadelphia and umm, umm whereas Bryan Adams songs everyone can name numerous hits.

Even Harmony blows that theory out of the water, she can only think of 1 "Hit" Adams has had !

To be fair, I did say I could not think of the titles of any further hits by Bryan Adams, but I enjoy listening to his music.

Have a look at the albums The Boss has sold. 

Adams has had two songs that anyone remembers.  One of them only because it's so bloody awful.

Although rather embarrassed to admit it, I quite like Brian Adams after seeing him at Wembley Stadium about 10 years ago (although do find that song very annoying).  I like Springsteen too.

I'd be the first to agree about Springsteen's success as regards albums and concerts sold/sold out. I also rate him as a songwriter but I simply prefer Adams and his music. :)

That's pushing the description of music to the limit surely ?

to be fair, there's a lot worse than Bryan Adams' music out there - at least he sings proper songs with lyrics and plays the guitar.  Not like this modern pop rubbish and silly dance music.

The only credit Bryan Adams should get is for shagging Princess Diana.

Bruce Springsteen, whilst not a princess poker, rocks to a vast extent and Born to Run is one of the all-time great songs. For 30 years he has been the literate voice of the American working class and anyone who says he is rubbish has cloth ears.

The low-fi album Nebraska is better than anything Bryan Adams has ever comprehended in his dreams.

The River is a great song and Album - so that's 1 up to Springsteen.

But then Summer of 69 was a bit of an anthem at Uni and so brings back many happy memories (1-all).

I've been to many Springsteen concerts and imo the man is simply a giant in a live setting.  Never seen Adams live, so I can't comment on what he has to offer.

i think you need to correct your grammar a little - neither is what I would call "the best", but given a choice of the two I would have to choose springsteen. I have seen in him live and it was quite an experience, although he dances like an epileptic with gout. (apologies to any epileptics with gout out there).

I also like the fact that all the thick yanks love "born in the USA" when if they took the time to listen to the lyrics would realise that the song isnt about how great it is being american....

Good post by Jon MW. So the question is why hasn't Springsteen had many hits? Irrespective of the Westlife argument (which is hard to argue) His results are pretty poor.

Answer - he's always been more an album and session (or live if you prefer) type artist as are his followers. He doesn't attract enough of the demographic who bought singles, whereas Adams targeted that area.

Think you'll find Springsteen has the greater album sales but Adams whoops him in the singles sales.

Crazy Frog was at number one for many weeks - a very annoying song.  Bryan Adams also had a number one for ages with an annoying song.  Therefore, Bryan Adams is as bad as the crazy frog.

There's logic there.

Westlife, Crazy Frog ... gives us a few clues to your record collection.

So if an artist struggles to sells singles it is because he is more of a "album artist" ::)

Some of the worlds most popular and biggest selling rock bands very rarely released singles.

Led Zeppelin springs to mind.

Led Zeppelin never released a single in the UK throughout their career.

I buy an album to listen to an artists range of songs and enjoy various moods they are trying to create, people mostly buy singles for a "Quick fix".

No not necessarily but some artists like Springsteen target album sales rather than single sales, others target single sales but just don't succeed.
Adams does reasonably well on both fronts just not quite aswell as the boss on Albums.
As for Led Zeppelin well not only have they produced superb albums but they are also big Wolves fans so they're obviously guys with good taste - and surely noone can diss Stairway to Heaven.

I only just found this thread and can't believe there is actually a discussion about this. Springsteen is by far better. the E-street band is nothing short of top class and some of the stuff they have recorded is truly astonishingly good. Adams..well he's Canadian..much like Celine Dion and I think Canada should apologize for both of them.

The only problem I have with Springsteen and his new stuff is that I can't make out a bloody word the man is saying cus he mumbles too damn much.

Went for Brucie,  nothing against Bryan Adams though, as I like quite a few of his songs. 

What swung it for me though was how many of his songs do I really really like and only "summer of 69" falls into that category versus half a dozen by Springsteen.

Plus it doesn't get more uplifting than that live version of "Born to run" does it?

Good show, I simply cannot fault your taste.

Lol, my wife is part of a singing duo called Silver City who sing at clubs etc around the Midlands. As well as performing as a standard duo they also offer an enhanced version of the gig where they dress up and perform affectionate and tongue-in-cheek tributes to singers/musical genres of the past 40 years.  So basically they get to dress up and sing as Beatles, Queen, Abba, Village People, Tina Turner and others.   

I'm currently setting up a website for them and so needed a few videos out there on youtube that I could link to. So I've set up a channel there and by putting some of them up now it means they should hopefully get a few hits before the site opens.

Bit like IndyTV in fact but obviously not as high profile of course!   ;D
