Title: Pokerstars.com Baden EPT: Day 1 - Interactive
Post by: NoflopsHomer on October 07, 2007, 03:20:38 AM
Welcome to Day 1 of the Pokerstars.com Baden EPT. Of all the casinos on the EPT tour, Baden is my favourite, I never managed a trip to Deauville and have heard many a story about how wonderful it is there, but out here in the Austrian countryside, there is a quiet pleasantness unlike anything I think you'll find in the UK or anywhere else for that matter. Dana (Yes, for it is her and I! Not a single person chose that combination in the competition, you're all rubbish!) and I had slight crazy panic when our original flight to Prague was 20 minutes late leaving us (literally) with a mad dash through the terminals and security to reach our mosquito sized connecting flight to Vienna.

Anyway, who should be on this tiny hamster of a plane but Aussie Mark (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=651) Vos (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=651), still on tilt from his boys losing the rugby, he's played five events whilst in Europe (the two EPT's and the WSOPE events) and cashed in two, but I could sense his preference for online play, especially when his regular game is the 200/400 PLO on Full Tilt.

Whilst collecting our baggage in Vienna, I felt a familiar hand on my shoulder, that of Julian (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) Thew (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225), who, with his birthday coming up is no doubt looking for a special present to celebrate. Then our taxi-cab was complete when Nicolas Levi also appeared at the airport, of course, complete with his hat. A 30 minute ride later which included conversations about or relating to some card game or other and we had arrived in the picturesque town of Baden.

Dana and I went to check into the Hotel Schloss only to find we weren't booked in there, the friendly but ever so slightly haughty man on reception pointed out we hadn't booked a room at the Hotel Schloss, but had actually booked a room at the Schloss Hotel which was two minutes round the corner. He seemed slightly unimpressed that I had mixed the two up.

After a quick dumpage of the bags, Dana and I headed to nearby Club 2, where the free bar and Pokerstars greeting party was being held. Although pretty quiet from when we arrived with few players around and a couple of slightly bemused locals, there was a wonderful moment of balance where the number of young twenty-somethings from Baden began to fill the club as the official party subsided and Lee Jones, John (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=209) Duthie (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=209) and Barry Greeenstein became lost amongst a swathe of indie and dance fans who probably would've have been quite irate if they'd known about the free bar they'd missed. Of course, at this point they were all too busy dancing to 'Funky Town' by Lipps Inc. Disco is not dead in this part of the world baby!

At this point, Dana and I decided to retire for the evening, but we'll be ready to bring you updates from 6pm (5pm UK time) from what is, in my opinion, the best casino in Europe.

Fee; free to ask us for updates on anyone you want tracking, or tell us who your tips are.

See you soon!

Morning all! Following the astoundingly free drinks provided by our friends at PokerStars, I slept for 14 hours, and am now just itching to update.

We have arrived at the incredibly lovely Casino Baden, where smoking is allowed in the press room, and I have just discovered that all the rumours concerning the buffet were true. Photos to follow, as soon as I'm hungry again. If I go up there now I'll only make myself sick on tiramisu.

About 250 registrations have been taken so far, and they're expecting in the region of 300 total. Don't forget to let us know whom you'd like us to stalk. Play will begin at 6pm, Austrian time. I have to lie down for a little while now. Urrr, full of food.

That is 5pm on your backward British you-don't-get-to-eat-the-buffet time. :)

You click on the "QUOTE" option on the relevant post, or, if you've already hit reply, scroll down the page to the post in question and click on "Insert Quote".

We'll be doing our best to keep you updated on all those folks. Play is due to start in 2 minutes, and they seem to be running this with military precision, so I'm heading upstairs now...

Play has now started!

Among those spotted so far is Julian (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) Thew (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225), sharing a table with Vanessa (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=886) Rousso (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=886) and Barry (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=478) Greenstein (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=478). In fact Julian has already, in his words, donked off 4k to Mr Greenstein, apparently with pocket jacks on Q-Q-x flop - Greenstein rivered a flush to take it. "Vengeance will be mine!" says Julian.

Also seen Matt (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=274) Tyler (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=274), currently sharing a table with Barny (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=41) Boatman (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=41) (see below). Rumours travel faster than light here - he asked after the state of my head following the party last night. I am just fine, thank you. Although I might have some coffee shortly.

All the requested North Americans have been spotted too, with the exception of Aurangzeb Sheikh. I guess he's on his way though. Floppy's got some photos of the rest of them, just about to be uploaded. Other fashionably late arrivals include Roland (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=384) De Wolfe (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=384), unable to find his seat on the plan owing to a late buy-in, and Richard (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=367) Ashby (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=367), climbing the stairs to the Festsaal (it's a party in there!) as I was heading back down.

At the moment the number of players is teetering on the brink of being 290, so anyone choosing over 350+, you're out of the running in the competition. Anyone who chose over 400 hadn't obviously checked the EPT website that said Baden has a 400 max capacity.

Anyway, onto the photos:

Aurangzeb Sheikh

Vanessa Rousso is down to less than 4k, partly the result of this accident against an as-yet-unnamed-owing-to-the-full-list-not-being-available-til-the-end-of-this-level Mateyboy.

Vanessa raises to 200 preflop and is called by two Maties. The flop is 9d Ts Js, and she bets out 600. The first Matey calls, and the second Matey raises another thousand - Vanessa calls and Other Matey folds. The turn is the 3c, and Raiseyboy bets out 3200. Eventually Vanessa folds.

Andy Black in interesting fold news now.

7c 7s 3c

The small blind checks, the big blind bets 300, Black on the button makes it 675. The small blind now makes it 2,500. The big blind folds and Black passes Ks 7h face up after about 30 seconds dwell. Anyone justifying a fold here?

Also, it seems that people winning pots don't have to show their cards here. Noah Boeken called a 600 bet on the river of a Qh 9s 4h 4d Td board after a lengthy dwell, his opponent quickly mucked and Noah didn't show his cards either, though no-one on the table raised the issue. Seems the showing to take the pot rule changes everywhere you go...

We thought for a brief moment that Dave Colclough was out, but it turns out he's not, he's just moved table, and he seem to have doubled up somewhere along the way too.

Meanwhile, of your Americans, Mr Reader, Michael Martin is on maybe 5k after unknown losses, Roman Yitzhaki is slightly up on his 10k starting stack, and Chris Bush is slightly down on his.

I honestly don't know. I'll keep an eye out for rounder.

Meanwhile he has been picking metaphorical fights with Barny Boatman. On an 8c 7h Tc flop, Matt bets 1600 and Barny calls.

Turn - Kd - they both check. The mood is thoughtful.

River - and they both check again. Matt is clearly relieved at the river-checkage from Barny as he shows his non-flushing  Ahrt Aspades. "Yup," says Barny and mucks. "Pass the chips," says Matt in a friendly and non-grandstandy sort of way. The chips are duly passed.

Mr Richard Ashby, he of the fashionable lateness, is currently sharing a table with the also fashionable Marcel Luske, and taking his fashionable chips off of him too.

On a board of 4h 3d 6h 2d Kc with an absolute bunch (the technical term) of chips already in the pot, Ashby bets 2500 and Luske folds, giving up the big ol' (also a technical term) pot to Ashby.

Sitting at their table is also an as yet unidentified but amusingly accented Mateyboy, who earlier in the day wandered into the press room shouting for Rosie, only to be met with some blank, buffet-glazed stares. Sure enough, as I approached the table, he looked up hopefully. "Rosie?" Nope, sorry. I almost feel bad. I might go back and pretend to be Rosie. Or send Floppy up there.

The table of Barcelona winner Sander Lyloff looks tough. As well as Marcel (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=642) Luske (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=642) and Richard (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=367) Ashby (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=367) being on this table, the EPT champ also has to contend with Phillip 'Clap Yours Hands Say' Yeh

And here is Jeff (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=594) Lisandro (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=594), obviously he has a kids' party to do afterwards.

my favorite site for tourney coverage! You Blondes do such an awesome job!

Would you be so kind to keep an eye out for Daniel Stern, Mike McDonald  and Sorel Mizzi please?

Thanks so much!

Thanks so much!

We are currently on a short ten minute break and the blinds will be be 75/150 and then we'll be on it.

In fact, I have the remnants of a Dani Stern hand from just before the break. It looked to be blind on blind but I'm not sure what the betting was preflop or post flop, but I saw him check the river of a Qh Kh 3c 6s 5h board and saw the scrabbletastically named Krzysztof Czerwinski make an almost pot-sized bet of 3.6k through shaking hands. Stern ended up passing what would've cost pratically all his stack, so I think he roughly had about 4k left.

Chip updates - Chris Bush -- 8k and change
Michael Martin -- 4.25k
Julian Thew -- 5k
Matt Tyler -- 13k - "It's an easy table. Me and Barny are having a bit of a craic. The rest of them are miserable bastards. Quote me on that."
Barry Greenstein -- 20k+ big stack

258 players remain. I believe Vanessa Rousso is among the no-longer-playing contingent.

As you can see I am using precious camera space constructively.

Sorrel Mizzi is OUT.

He was all-in on a Ts 7s 5s board but was likely to be to be drawing very thin against Michael Durrer's Aspades Qs. Mizzi simply mucked as the turn and river came Ad and Qd. Hevad 'Rain' Khan told me he thought Mizzi probably had Jacks as he would've have flipped a set over as he still had outs.

Here is the Canadian about 2 minutes pre knockout.

Elsewhere Dani Stern almost had a double through but missed his freeroll with Aspades Qs vs the Ahrt Qd of Mark Bartlog on a Qh Ts 6s 6d board when the river came an anti-climatic Ad.

Mike McDonald just knocked Richard Toth with Ace King against Ace Queen.

It's funny but all these things actually happened as I go to their respective tables. I'm like a lightning rod for action I guess. ::)

Travis Bickle Ramzi Jelassi raises to 400 and gets 3 callers, including big blind Dave Colclough. The 9c 7c Qs flop is checked all the way around, before Ramzi takes a 1.1k stab on the 2s turn to take the pot down and shows the drawtastic 8s 6s.

Thomas (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=877) Wahlroos (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=877) is doing well on about 20k.
Also I found Ramzi (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=714) Jelassi (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=714), doing a little less well on about 5k.
Also on about 5k is Jeff (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=594) Lisandro (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=594).

Meanwhile no change for Michael (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=937) Martin (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=937) and Chris Bush, sitting on 4k and 8k respectively.

Richard (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=367) Ashby (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=367) has lost a pretty big pot against Mateyboy's pocket jacks on a 4c 3h 7d 5c 4s board, but is still doing fine on about 12k.

Across the room, Katja (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=624) Thater (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=624) is not happy after her raise to 600 preflop was met with a reraise to 2200 by a gent two seats to her left and she folded.

Thomas 'the Eggman' Wahlroos chip height of 20k can pretty much be explained by one hand. He had Aces, found a caller with Ace Seven. The flop was A-7-x. You do the math(s). (The 's' is optional depending on you being in Europe or the states).

Johann Storakers was given a full double up by Christophe Defforey, the former pushing for his last 7,275 into a 10k pot on a 5s 3s Tc 6c board with Kc Kh and getting called by an unlikely Qc Ts sending the Scandie up to around 25k. Thewy, on the same table managed to double with Queens against Kings.

Tales of the shortstacks now...

Roland De Wolfe meanwhile is sitting on a 2k microstack, periodically looking around the room like he wants to leave already.

Found Mark Vos chatting to Roman Yitzhaki on the stairs. I asked if he was out, but he is apparently not. Still on about 4.5k, he is demoralised owing to a gent on his table who may or may not be Theo Jorgensen continually outplaying him, and doesn't want to play any more. "I'm putting out a hit on him," says Mark.

Roman however is cheerful on about 15k. I tell him that someone on here has being enquiring after his progress. Says Mark, "It's a hot chick." I say, it could be, I really don't know. Wide-eyed, Roman says, "Seriously??" So Mr or Ms TheReader, if you are indeed a hot chick, you may be in with a chance...

Patrik Antonius just added another 10k or so to his stack. Sometimes it can be easier to read from the rail whether someone is weak or strong but with Antonius, I don't think anyone knows when he's strong or not. After an midposition limper Antonius for 200 tried to raise to to 1,200 but it was counted as a string-raise and he could only make it 400. After a few minutes discussion with the TD and the big blind coming out in support of Antonius saying he'd been able to get away with the same thing earlier on a different table.

Anyway, the big blind and limper both called the raise.

Flop:

8s Qd Aspades

BB checks, limper bets 1,200, Antonius calls and the BB folds.

Turn:

Kh

Limper checks, Antonius bets 2,600 and the limper calls.

River:

Jh

Limper checks, Antonius bets 7,600, the limper calls quickly. Antonius quietly says, "Straight," flipping over Ahrt Tc to take a 22k pot.

Andy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469) Black (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469), Annette (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=902) Obrestad (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=902) and John (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=215) Kabbaj (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=215) are all OUT. Last hand before the break, Ramzi Jelassi got involved with a Mateyboy on a Qd 6d  Ahrt flop - Matey bet 500, and Ramzi called.

The turn came the 6c - Matey bet 700, and Ramzi called, looking for a split second just a little bit hesitant, like he might fold or raise instead. But he called.

River - Ks - and Ramzi bet 1500. "Ohhh noooo," says Matey, whose accent I like very much. "He has a seeex!" And Matey folds.

187 players remain, we're almost onto what we're being told is the last level of the day, (150/300/25). Thomas Walhroos is over 35k now.

He made it 800 to go in early position, a gentleman to his left called leaving just 1400(!) behind, the big blind also called.

Flop:

3s 9d 6h

BB checks, Wahlroos checks, shorty moves in. BB folds, Wahlroos shrugs and throws in the 1,400 like the small change it is and flips over his Ad Qd. Shorty shows Kc Ks.

Turn:

3d

"Ooooh, now you're in trouble," exclaims the Eggman.

River:

Aspades

"With my luck, I was a favourite on the turn," he tells Thor Hansen before adding, once the departee had er..departed. "He played it so badly he deserved to lose."

It's People I Don't Know Who They Are time now.

Ram Vaswani raises to 800, but folds when this be-ponytailed gent makes it 2500 from the button. Can anyone shed any light on his identity?

Also this guy below called Barry Greenstein's chunky bet on a Qs Jd 4s flop. The turn came 3h and Barry bet 2k; the Mateyboy below made it 4.5k and Barry folded. Prize for anyone who knows who it is! (Prize may or may not actually exist.)

Patrik Antonius won an enormous pot against the below Paradise Poker be-shirted gentleman. Not sure exactly how quite so many chips made their way into the pot, as he had Queen-high to Patrik's pair of Aces. I think he may have had an Accident.

On Table Wahlroos, Mr Wahlroos made a raise only for the owner of the incredible jacket below (doesn't it look like some kind of scarlet letter equivalent, like he has to wear it for crimes in his country?) to reraise. "Is so bad, this hand," says Wahlroos, folding  Ahrt Jh face up.

Random Chipcounts -

Sebastian Riviere -- 15k
Michael Martin -- back down to 4k
Marcel Luske -- about 5k - I saw him min-raise from early position, and fold extremely unhappily when the small blind, an Asian gent with a little jade Buddha sitting on his cards, reraised.

Marcel Luske is OUT. UTG limped for 300, as did the Cut-Off, the button then made a rather large 3,600. Marcel pushed from the big blind for a total of 4,925, put on his iPod and began singing. As you do. The limpers got out of the way and the button called with his Ahrt Kc, up against Marcel's Jacks.

Board:

9s 4s 7c Qh Ks

There is precisely one less singing Dutchman in the Casino now, making a grand total of 0 singing Dutchmen.

Also out are Martin Wendt (who Wendt and gone ;hide;), Jonas Molander, Juha Helppi and Travis Bickle/Ramzi Jelassi. The final words of the last of these were allegedly, "Are those chips coming to me? Are those chips coming to ME? Well I don't see anyone else in the pot, are those chips coming to me?......Oh you have the best hand, I guess not."

Surinder Sunar has just used one of these cards.

He pushed all-in over the top of a 1k button raise for around 4k total, his opponent dwelled and Surinder called the clock before his opponent made the call for half his stack with Aspades Jc. A good call considering Surinder was only able to show Ad 9h.

Board:

Qh 7d 5c 5d 5h

;kc;

Surinder still on around 4.5k, here pictured sitting between Morten Erlandsen (aka Pokergirl) and Cristiano Blanco (EPT Dortmund runner-up).

Mr Gambler Jacket Man avoided some kind of disaster maybe with his Qh Jh against pocket Queens when both players rivered their straight on a Th 9s Js 6d Ks board, with a whole pile of betting all the way down. He now seems to be quite a big stack. Staying on Table Gamblor, Mr Thomas Wahlroos also seems to be a big stack, on around 40k.

Other rough chip counts (the smaller the stack, the greater the accuracy) include

Patrik Antonius -- 35k+
Barry Greenstein -- 40k
Sebastian Riviere -- 35k
Aurangzeb Sheikh -- 4k
Dave Colclough -- 16k, ipod firmly ON
Matt Tyler -- 11k and making faces. He is now sharing a table with Patrik Antonius, but has promised to buy me a drink when play finishes for the day, so a completely unbiased Yay Matt! Ahem.

Contrary to what was previously reported, there remains exactly one singing Dutchman in the building. Marcel Luske is enjoying the massive cash game action that has taken over the greater part of the Festsaal since they started breaking tables. Also spotted trying to make their buy-in back are Jeff Lisandro, Jan Sointula, my friend Rosie Man, and about 200 others.

Couldn't see Attractive American Michael Martin on my rounds, so let's assume for the moment that he's OUT.

By the way I'm not allowing any part of that in Scrabble. Just so's we're clear on that.

Dana --

Right you are.  Not only did his Queens run into aces but they ran into two sets of aces in the same hand....QQ vs AA vs AA.  But, he's still attractive.

Yes he's out. He was standing by Roman Yitzhaki delivering encouragement to his friend. In the form of rap.

I kid you not.

I think this is the non-Scrabble-compliant Eva Skoennemark. I hope it is, anyway.

Sitting next to Possibly Ms Skoennemark is Mark (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=651) Vos (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=651), who must have escaped Theo (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=758) Jorgensen (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=758) as he's up to 35k - he was on 4k last time I saw him.

Also here is a nice shot of Table Antonius-Tyler (note how the Tyler head does not appear perfectly spherical from this angle).

And one of Katja (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=624) Thater (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=624) for no reason other than that she's still in.

Oh, that means we're done! Yay! Apparently we're playing down to 40 tomorrow, from 2pm (1pm your time, UK people).

I get to stick forks in things now. Like I haven't been doing that all day. Mmm.
