Title: EPT DUBLIN Live Update - DAY ONE
Post by: tikay on October 29, 2005, 01:42:34 PM

Welcome to a cold, wet, & windy Dublin.

The blonde office is being constructed as we speak, & Jen will be here in 5 minutes. Play is due to start at 3pm. Ish.

Now now, no orifices & sphincters today please.

Our office? It's a tent - a TENT! And the wind is howling, the rain is gusting in, lovely.

Welcome to Dublin.

I am sat in my fourth floor corner reserved for me by Rolf... it looks like the wireless is a little shaky so I am sacrificing speed in order to be sat literally inches from the players, in this room at least.  I think the multi-storey problem has been resolved by a cunning system of area allotment, so we should (fingers crossed) be able to keep an eye on all those just pictured, and a few others.

The very same Malc M just brought news that on another floor far far away Ram Vaswani is sat next to Dave Colclough... should be interesting.

My area involves the Attic, wherein is Xuyen, but I have some instant news from the Ram Vaswani table:

First hand, Ram picked up QQ someone raised preflop (holding, as it turns out, KK), but the flop came Q-high and with around 18,000 Ram has to be the insta-chip leader!

Title: Re: EPT DUBLIN Live Update - DAY ONE
Post by: tikay on October 29, 2005, 03:45:53 PM

OK, here's the set-up. The comp is on 4 or 5 "floors", which Jwn will name shortly. But there's a Basement Dungeon - stone floor, the lot, used to be the Betfair Lounge, they have 4 or 5 tables in there. Ground Floor, "front room", 5 tables in there I think, first floor, 4 tables, next floor 5 tables, attic, 6 tables spread between two "attics".

Jen is on, I think, the 2nd floor, & I am in the Press HQ on th Ground Floor, so no doubt I'll get allocated the top two floors......

We have Malcolm Muskett - Malc-M, & Ariston, to help us, as we just can't manage all these different rooms.

Jen will spend the first hour identifying everyone, & that will pay dividends later in the comp. There are a LOT of Scandies here.

Got some more pics, too.

Ah I thought that little fact might have been mentioned... (hi Trace) yes, after that initial excitement it's all gone a bit quiet, as you might expect with the little-blinds-huge-stacks and all.  Yes, there are a lot of Scandies, from the instantly recognisable Sverre (go Sverre!) to a good proportion of the Norsemen, Juha Helppi, Kjersti Grini, and quite apart from them, I have Vik Kanwar sat right behind me, next to Greek Jack.

Ariston, contrary to popular opinion, is actually rushing about with a bit of paper, making what I think is a list of notable chip counts.  Game must've broken.  Hooray for him - they'll be up as soon as he gets to Tikay or back up to me...

Players you may know in my room:
Abel Meijberg (remember him from the final in Baden?)
Bad Girl Xuyen Pham
Torstein Iversen
Joe Beevers
Noah Boeken
Simon Trumper
Juha Helppi
Paul Moss
Frode Fagerli
Milkybar Kid Ben Grundy, who is on the same table as Joe Grech and Surinder Sunar
Anders Berg

Going up to the attic now

Len Collins is OK - he has 11k.

The bad-beat boys, I know them, & will see what I can do.

The Rookie, having promised me he'd sit quiet for the first 2 hours, got involved with Barny, who took a bunch of chips off Brian, who was holding.......  7c 4d. THEN he has the gall to say "this table is ******* mad"......

Here's Sverre Sundbo, with a young lady who appears to have had some trouble with her skirt.

As I was just leaving the Master Suite (floor 4) I saw a bit of a hand developing with Frode Fagerli, one of team Norsemen, so I watched.  He'd raised to 600 preflop and received three callers (the blinds are now 50 - 100).  The flop came  Jh Td Ad, and he bet out 1,500.  Matey raised to 5,000 - all-in - call (meanwhile the other two guys got out of the way).

Frode showed  Tc Th vs  Ah Js and with the rest of the cards coming  9s 8d he doubles up, and the other guy is nearly out.

News of a quite extraotrdinary hand coming in. Joe Grech was holding  Qs Qh, & Ben Milky Bar Kid Grundy had the whopper  8d 4s

The board came  Qc 6d 7c - Joe LOVED that, the turn was  9h and the River  5c, giving Ben a gutshot & a 15k pot, & leaving poor Joe non-plussed.

Just saw Paul Moss clash with Simon Trumper in an interesting sort of hand:

The board was  Jh Qc As Qd.  Paul bet 600 which Simon called.  The river brought a  9c.  This time Simon bet out 1200, and after a long think got raised to 2,600.  Simon called showing  Jc Qs and it turns out the river got Paul into trouble with his  9h Qh.

So now the counts are as posted, with about 3,500 changed hands between those two.

The rumours of the full seating list are still just that, though.  We journalist types are taking turns gently badgering whoever's at the desk every 15 minutes.

The blinds are now 75 - 150.  There's a break after this level.

57 losing news now - two players as yet unintroduced to me got it all-in on the turn with a board of  Ah 8c 4s 6h.  Their hands: As Ac and.... 5c 7d!  It was all looking so promising until the river brought the case  Ad.  And another one's down.

The Rookie, Brian Wilson,  is OUT. Nothing went rigjht for him today. He's gone back to the hotel in a strop.

Here's, arguably, the least flattering pic ever seen of Isabelle. Ariston took it, I hasten to add.

Dave Colclough is in good hearty, he has 11k. He's given me his "Merrion Casino Final Table" Jacket, I'm freezing down here, it's cold & wet & windy.

Byron, the thing between Barny & Brian was the result of a pre-comp bet between them. Brian offered Barny 10/1 that Barny could not name Brian's hole cards in any given hand.

Answering a few questions.

Simon Trumper is still in, we weiull get his count shortly.

Starting stacks were 10k.

Average - don't know  yet, but I'd guess, maybe 12k or 13k max.

Here is Simon, with a less than enthralled looking Mathilde, who is his constant companion & railbird. Some railbird.,

Simon Trumper news, then - down to 8,000 after doubling up Juha Helppi's  Ac Ah with  Jh 5h on a Jack-high board.  So Juha has 12,000 now.

Noah Boeken has 26,000 at last count and has been joined at his table by his friend the hoody-sporting Jeffrey Bensinger, on 11,500.

Jake is having a whinge as I type. A bit like you after your aces get cracked.

QPR stunningly won 2-1 after having a player sent off.

Brentford lost 2-0 at home to Bournemouth.

So it's been a good day all round!

Well today was on of the toughest for me in  a big comp, nothing went right. I watched Barney Boatman play well and go to 30k in 2nd level. I can say that I always try to learn something when I play, today all I learned is that losing so fast sucks! I would rather play bad than suffer today again, Oh wel I will just have some fun and get ready for the 888.com on Monday.

I think the first prise of $500,000 will make me feel better once I win It!!!!!! Watch out Gary Jones, the ROOKIE is coming to claim the prize.

Good luck to evryone still in, thanks to evryone for the input on the 2c 2h hand , it really is great to have a community like Blonde for support and information.

...and the Boy Thewy, who's having a torrid afternoon, but never count him out.

We are just starting a 15 minute break. The first 7 levels are 45 minutes, then they go to 1 hour levels.

Break times here are chaotic. I'm on the ground floor, there is jjust one flight of stairs in the entire building - it's a house jobbie - so everyone dsahes downstairs at once for their fag break. Ireland, if you did not know, bans smoking in all public places.

As for those specific counts - just in the nick of time found Iwan Jones on 25,000

And El Blondie has been moved to the table right next to my tiny little workstation, so it will be easy to update on his progress, if I can squeeze back in the room.  He has 9,000.

Yes, just like Tikay says, when there's a break a hundred people come down the stairs, which makes going up them rather tough going.  I think they should be one way (up), with a fireman's pole for descending.

Mr. Punkfloyd has 14,000 - will work on the others...

From this room:  Steve Vladar (7,500) was just moved up here where it errs on the side of swelter rather than shiver, sat kind of back to back with Bad Girl, who didn't notice as she was fighting a brave fight for the waiter to bring her some food.  In fact, just at this minute Dave suggested a rather savvy business plan of heading to Burger King, buying 30 burgers and selling them for a tenner, or something.  I wish I knew where the fast food outlets were, actually...that's not a bad plan and it doesn't look like we press are getting any preferential service treatment...

Just quickly - big dwelling talk-tastic moment from Noah Boeken (on 30,000 prior to losing 6ish on this hand):

He faced a huge all-in bet on a board of  6s Tc Ac 7c and talked at the confident-looking opponent long enough for the cameras to start hovering:

"You don't want me to call."
"I want you to call."
"Why bet so big... I should call but I won't," he said, showing  Ah Qh.  His opponent kindly showed the  As 7d which would have nearly taken him out if he'd called.  Which I kind of thought would never happen.

Anyway, there followed some animated discussion with Jeffrey Bensinger, who has 15,000.

For those waiting on Isabelle's progress, she's still in the attic (although they've broken one of the tables up there and she looks likely to be moving soon) and has 14,000 or so (the camera guy's back was kind of blocking the door).  It looks like she's calmed down after that stressful late arrival - if your plane's delayed, it's delayed and there's not a lot you can do about it except show up and play with the rest of your chips.

One of the waitresses just came up and said something mysterious which sounded like, "the food pizza are on their way."  That sounds good.  As insurance I seem to have had a burger ordered by a certain blondeite playing in the comp, and therefore allowed to order burgers with authority...

....and in Other News, Julian YoYo Thew is still on 7,000.  When I say "still" I mean that he's probably been up to 30k and down to 1k and back to 7k in the time it's taken me to visit the upstairs twice.

El Blondie OUT - following a raise to 2k from mid position (the blinds are 300 - 600 ante 75) he pushed all-in from the small blind with  Tc Th.  He got a pretty quick call from  Ah Kd, which hit both pairs on the flop to send him (graciously) from the tournament.  As a helpful observer on the table observed, "you've got to win those races to win tournaments."

Welcome Maharajah, glad you are enjoying it. We WILL keep going til the end, though I need to go & register at oir Hotel, or else we will get locked oit. It's in Ballsbridge, which I'm told is not too far, so sometime soon, I'll pop across there & leave Jen here solo. She'll cope OK, no worries.

Here's yet ANOTHER "bad-beat" team member, there are 5 or 6 here, this is John Conroy, aka PunkFloyd. He's a Livetpool supporter.

Tikay -- What the European venues lack in space they more than make up with class and character. The major American tourneys are becoming so big they can only be held in ballrooms -- and where's the fun in that? (The biggest exception is Bellagio in Las Vegas, which hosts tournaments in their gorgeous Fontana Lounge overlooking the famous water fountains.)

I'm the lead tournament reporter for Card Player, but I've been following your coverage of the big European events recently. Tournament poker reporting is still growing, and it's interesting to see how others tackle the same problems that all poker journalists are faced with. Plus, I'm trying to improve my knowledge/recognition of the best European players, who often play in WPT and WSOP events over here. It's only fair that Europeans should be able to follow our coverage of big American events and hear how their home-grown players are doing, right?

Right now I've got American football on TV (Georgia v. Florida), and EPT Dublin coverage on the computer. Not bad for a Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas!

Besides, it's always fun to root for Isabelle. And don't let her late arrival fool you -- I have it on good authority that she is focused and ready to win! :)

(FYI, I only signed up as a member after you said it was necessary to view photos -- I was wondering why I couldn't see anything! I think you should mention that at the beginning of each tourney, just in case there are others like me.)

Counts from floor #1 -

Richard Redman     70,000 (I think a fairly comfortable leader, although the way the pace has picked up it might not stay that way long)
Andy Black            58,000 ("or something like that")
Brigitta Johanssen  20,000
Simon Trumper     11,000
Josh Darby            22,000
Isabelle Mercier      27,000
Noah Boeken        42,000
Padraig Parkinson    4,500 (after a nice move with no cards which didn't turn out quite as planned when the guy called)
Jeffrey Bensinger   24,000 (The American seems to think going out partying in between 12 hour tournament days is a good plan)
Paul Moss             35,000
Joep Durkstra        50,000

Cardplayer - yes, the venues over here are much more intimate & friendly, none more so than the Merrion. And The Rio for WSOP was just awful, horrible. There must be a happy medium, surely? Anyway, I hope, when i'm less busy, we can chat some more.

Yes that silence was a technical moment as I attempted to switch to the speedier wireless which other people seem to be having no problem with.  Typically, my computer connects, but won't go anywhere, if you get what I mean.  So back to the simcard, please bear with me.

Title: Re: EPT DUBLIN Live Update - DAY ONE
Post by: CardPlayerBJ on October 30, 2005, 12:14:50 AM
Go Surinder! He's a popular European player here in the States, particularly among the poker media. He plays a lot of our big events, and he's just an all-around nice guy.

(I just thought I'd add a bit of support for him since he's short stacked.)

Also -- I can completely sympathize with wireless problems while covering a tournament. Nothing worse than having information to update to the Web, but having no Net access to do it!

Stephen MacLean OUT - after a couple of valiant short-stacked all-ins he found  Ah Td, which would have been nice had not Jeffrey Bensinger on his immediate left not re-raised all in for a lot more with  As Kd.  A few minutes of controversy while they decided where the flop should come from (the dealer hadn't heard the re-raise and had dumped the cards down thinking the hand was over) and no improvement sent him out finally in what looks like 67th place or so.

Young Damien Memercier took out two players at once with his AK - a very short stacked raggy small blind and a QK.  With six players on a table up here they need to have a little breakette as players come from the dungeon to replace them.

New counts:

Richard Redman    72,000
Andy Black           55,000
Brigitta Johanssen 21,000
Jeffrey Bensinger  60,000
Paul Moss            55,000
Joep Durkstra      32,000
Damien Memercier 30,000

Well done to Red-Dog

watching another Blondite doing well in a tourney is almost

as good as playing in it yourself, I can honestly say I get a proper

Buzz out of other Blondies doing well in tournies.

Even RobertHm, doing well, now gives me a strange feeling of well being!!

what a wonderful place this is.

Andy Black takes a big hit as a young man in a hat with KK got a full double-up from Andy's AK on a King-high flop.  It looks like he's down to under 20,000, but still not out...

BlueSquare qualifier Paul Moss is chatting away - relaxed as can be, just now leaning back with his hands behind his head discussing strategy with someone he just pushed off a hand.

They have two lovely girls, both with names that I can't remember. Min (Nim/Nin) is a herbal chemist, or acupuncturist, or something like that, I don't remember exactly. Yes, Paul "M3Boy"  Garnham is down in the Smokers Tent, with a can of beer, looking very glum. The pot was about 46,000, he'd have been in good shape if his JJ held up.

Therre is 30 minutes left on Level 11, then a 5 minute break, (it's a 1 hour clock), & we finish for the night after Level 12.

59 runners left according to the plasma screens, blinds currently 800-1,600, ante 200.

Counts from the dungeon:

Isabelle Mercier   14,000
Surinder Sunar    45,000 (somehow this has spun up from nearer 10k last time I checked on him)
Greg Amoils        50,000
Stuart Forsyth    44,000
Ray 'Exitonly'      40,000
Andreas Hagen   55,000
Noah Boeken      73,000
Donnacha O'Dea 60,000
Joe Rafferty       90,000 (having just performed a double knockout)

It's gone very quiet in here. Andy Black likes not just to be Table Captain, but lead the verbals too. Nothing nasty, just lots & lots  of chat, designed, I think, to put the other players at a disadvantage. But since his big setback, he's not said a word - all very sombre. Mind you, he had no way olff the hand. He had AK, Matey Boy had KK, & a K fell on the flop.

Here he is earlier. His goaty seems to have overgrown somewhat recently.

Okay, my brief support of Surinder seems to have done wonders for his chip count. But now that he is relatively safe from the blinds, I once again affirm that my FULL support is 100% behind Isabelle. I hope to see her at 45,000 soon. :)

Hi Tikay,

I was at an event in London this week when a well known player gave a fellow player a terrible slow roll. After player A had pushed all in the well known player stands up and asks is that a ten high flop. He then ponders. When he finally sees that it is he calls and shows his pocket pair 10, 10 for trips..hmmmm

A few minutes later he calls another player and again after player A shows his cards the well known player shows his kicker first before saying oops and then showing his winning card.  His excuse for all this was his poor eyesight.

Do you think such a player should be publically named. Or should the player fall on his own sword.. you have ten minutes to reply...tick, tick, tick.

Yes CardPlayer you seem to be the anti-bok...

I think the actual chip leader (according to the better-informed Rolf) is Michael O'Sullivan (the KK doubler-up off Andy Black) who was last spotted with over 110,000

Here's a recent visitor to the blonde office, Richard Ashby. He lasted 10 minutes in the comp, before his QQ got done by KK. He's been playing cash ever since, & looks cheerful enough, & I imagine he's molre than recouped his entry fee. A fearless and fearsome cash player is our Richard.

We are off to see if we can get a pic of pommo. And maybe have a ciggie break.

jonner - yes, that's correct, we play the Final at the RDS at 7.30pm, & everyone who attends gets a goodie bag, containng a baseball cap & t-shirt, & it's free food & drink, too. All very exciting.

Andy Black fights Back news now - after a middle position raise to 4k and a call on the button, Andy moved all in on the big blind.  Lengthy dwells and passes resulted in his having built his small stack to somewhere nearing 40,000.

There is just one table remaining in the upstairs room (in which resides our updating stragglers) - and Michael Greco got involved immediately in a pretty big pot after sitting down.  He raised on the button and got a big blind call, and then a big blind check raise all-in on the  Tc 4h 9s flop.  After a long time he passed, saying it was K10 he was folding, and was shown a monstrous set of 4s for doing so.

Just like to say a big thank you to all the updaters , without you my lengthy time alone while Pauls playing poker would be very frustrating  >:?
The pics were great Tikay , many thanks for those  :-* :-*
Paul has Slovenia the end of November , so hopefully the Poker Gods will be a little kinder to him .
I really enjoy reading the forum and its kept me amused  :) thank you all for keeping me this side of sane  :)up

May not see Paul, but I'll see the sister. There was a shortage of Hotel rooms in Dublin this weekend, & after she fell out with Paul - something about going too far, though Dublin, it seems to me, is not THAT far - I did the gentlemanly thing & offered her my spare bed.
