Title: Georgios Samaras from Man City - any good?
Post by: Rod Paradise on January 29, 2008, 11:44:28 AM
On loan at Celtic till the end of the season.

Indestructable (and any other City fans) any opinion on him?

A striker who Sven thinks is 'not as good' as Darius Vassell or Emile Mpenza - what does that tell you?

Probably still good enough to score against Gretna or Falkirk, though.

If you find a City fan to say anything good about him you will have done better than me ;)

Looks a player but just doesnt score enough goals for me.  Although maybe is just never worked out for him at City, I hope he does well for us.  Can't be much worse than JVoH.

Contrasting nicely with "NON-EXISTANT" on the South side of the city ;)

I think its a good signing Rod, the guy had a great record before moving to City and its easy for players not to settle when they move at a young age. He does strike me as someone that needs an arm around him and some cajoling but he is an International striker and will deffo do well for Celtic.

He's 6ft 4.  So not sure Strachan will be doing much cuddling.

He can't be any worse than JVoH so its got to be an improvement.

I am a Celtic fan and i dont think any Celtic fan will be happy way this loan deal imo they always take the cheap option and its very frustrating as a supporter

I dont know exactly what the deal entails Mick as I havent yet read up on it but taking players on loan with a view to siging them later is a great idea for me. The team taking the player dont have to pay til later and the team laoning the player get his wages off their books for the rest of the season. If the guy turns out to not settle and be no good you can send him back. If he turns out to be golden then you get him for a fee that you agreed months earlier.

According to reports the fee's agreed, so the boy's playing for his transfer for the rest of the season. Not too much downside in that for Celtic.

no, it looks a good deal to me. If he gets his confidence back and gets fitter you could have a real good un there.

One of the problems Samaras had was that he never seemed to have a good run out in the side. Playing games here and there I don't think boosted his confidence and it isn't his fault that we had to pay too much money. I have met him and he is a nice bloke, but would he be my first choice for City - no and it was about time he moved on. Hope he turns his career around, but at best he might be a supersub for Celtic.
PS Interesting at the weekend that in the Chelsea Wigan game all three scorers are ex City, well i thought it was interesting  anyway.  ;)

Spot on mate.

Now if we'd paid the reported 2.75mill to buy him then I wouldn't be happy but there is very little downside to this especially as it means we won't be pursuing the lump of wood that is Kyle Lafferty!

To be honest Teacake those two show how distorted the transfer fees can be at times and why buying players that have had a poor time but have class can be better value than buying players that are on a high but in a lower league. Samaras' record as an international player and Prem player mean he has to be worth more than Lafferty even tho he has undoubted promise and the great thing for Celtic is they get to try the guy out before they pay for him.

I thought when Rangers were mentioning Samaras last week that he could turn out to be the diff in the title race and now Celtic have him it could well turn the other way.

I think Kaka, Gerrard & Ronaldo are excellent players.

I don't doubt you've seen Lafferty a lot more than I have but can we have some perspective please Mr End.

I always post with perspective

I'm not saying he's a world beater but having seen him live twice this season I beleive he's Premiership quality as I have posted on the FA Cup thread

Big, strong, great crosser, eye for goal

Not tremendously quick, more of a type who uses space well to make room for a cross

Certainly, absolutely, 100% not a cart-horse

Not a cart horse, a lump of wood  ;)

He's 6'4 & 11 stone 2lbs, is he hollow?

4 goals in 24 appearances is hardly an eye for goal, he's picked up more bookings than goals ffs! At the 4 mill asking price I pass every day of the week.

He's tall and thin yes but deceptively strong. He also has a fierce shot

You are paying for potential..young British players don't come cheap these days

other players worth watching

Haynes at Ipswich..r mid

Brunt at WBA..l wing

Mattock at Leicester..l back

Bostock at Palace..Midfield

Reminds me of Chris Sutton & he done ok for us.

One for the future tho, bit of coaching and playing with better players he will learn & improve.

4 mil for laferty is taking the piss tbh

as for samaras , i think its a no lose situation for Celtic , he comes in for half a season , he strengthens the squad and we get a look at him , if he does a job we can look to make him permanent , if he sucks then we say cheerio and line up somebody else , i think its a shrewd move by strachan tbh

Can't claim to know much about Samaras but I saw him described as 'quick' today, which combined with being 6'4" means he meets the physical attributes we need to add to the team.

So far we've signed:

Hinkel - quick, 6'1" full back
Mizuno - quick, small, tricky midfielder/winger
Samaras - quick (allegedly), 6'4" striker

Seems the manager may have actually recognised some of the areas we are lacking in.

Talking if ridiculous transfer fees Liverpool are apparently paying 18 million for Mascherano. Water carriers are getting expensive these days too.

With the money in the British game at the top..the lower clubs and more importantly the agents have the upper hand and they know it

See nothing that will stop the inflation of fees further personally

and while I am having a right moan and tho its about another Liverpool player I am deffo not ante red. I read at the weekend that Jermaine Pennant is to release his football autobiography, you have to laugh. Does this guy think he has achieved anything at all that warrants an autobiography?

Its a sad indictment of what English players feel is a success or what they can do to earn any extra cash.

I mean what are the chapters gonna be called.

1 How I pissed away my early career
2 How I played for Arsenal reserves
3 Prison was a bit of a blow
4 How tagging made me feel bad
5 Liverpool reserves
6 30K a week for doing nowt

Maybe another Chapter for the Pennant book could  be

 7. How Benitez has put together the worst squad for years at Liverpool but I still cant get a game.

8. Look thru our squad and ask how many would get into the teams of the big three and ask why the manager doesnt get the sack.
