I'm just saying it in the term "rated" I dont think Rooney is as good as Kaka, Ronaldo, Zidane, Henry which is the bracket the media seems to place him in; where as players like palmer and heskey I dont think have ever been rated-apart from some demented england managers

Depnds at what level they are "rated".....Cruyff for me should never be considered at the same level of Pele, Maradonna, Puscas, Moore, Best et al.

And to please the Bandit, Boruc is currently one of the most overrated players IMO. And I did see the saves at the weekend.

Maybe, I dont really care as I loved going to watch him week in/week out, only wish we had a player with half the talent he had. Besides it wasnt as if he didnt achieve- he won the european championships, he played a blinder in his last world cup and came 5th in world player of the year in 1992 so dont think he could be classed as "overrated"- only really people in scotland rated him TBH

Well this sounds a little simple but to be world class you need to be the top player/or players in that position. Gerrard is simply very good but not near the top whereas players like Pirlo, Messi, the two Ronnies etc are real world class.

Cant agree with Crouch. He scores goals when he plays, and hes good!

Agree with Alan Smith comment. WTF does he actually do.

And even tho i hate Scum, id go with Owen not Rooney atm.

ronaldinho plays left mid

ronaldo plays right mid
pirlo centre mid

can you name a team in the world the gerrard cant get into  I dont rate a centre mid in the world above Gerrard

You're kidding right??

Although I agree on Crouch, built for purpose. Like Lineker and McCoist, not the greatest of players but they could score goals...........that's what they were paid to do and they both done it well.

Who mentioned the positions they play in as a factor as to Gerrards class? The two ronnies are world class wide men, Messi a world class 'hole' player. That doesnt mean that gerrad is a world class centre midfielder becasue other world class players play in different positions does it?

Pirlo is diff gravy to him, Zidane was diff class to him.

All time George Best, great talent only last 3/4 years until self destructing. You are not an all time great over 3/4 years imo.

Why would it, is the 3rd best golfer in the rankings world class at the side of Woods? no, he is just a very good player. If you had a wordwide set of rank average midfelders does the best one then become world class just because he is the best of the average players. It boils down to what was said earlier, coz we see em every week and read how great they are Gerrad is rated world class when for me he isnt.

Currently with Ronaldinho attitude i would have Rooney ahead of him.

Something like Messi> Henry> Rooney> Ronaldinho> Eto. But eto is different player and would play as the main striker or Henry with the other 3 competing for the other position. So in other words you may have a point, lol.

As you can tell I rate Rooney.

Are you reading what I am writing?

Pirlo and Kaka are diff class, true world class players. Zidane another recent example of a world class midfielder. Which of those three does Gerrard get in front of?

So to my eye its pretty simple, of course he isnt the best player in the world in his position as Ive already said.

Gerrard isn't even the best CM in the premierships.  Fabregas is a better player IMO.

Stevie G ia very very good player, but pick an world XI and I wouldn't have him in it.  TBH I don't think there would be many players plsying their trade in our leagues in their.

Ray Clemence. How Shilton had to play alternate international games with him during the 70s perplexed me as a child and still does now

Geoff Hurst. One good game, not fit to lace Greaves' boots over a career. Still makes a living out of that one game too.

Denis Wise. Awful lumpy footballer surrounded by a lot of talent (Zola, Gullit, Vialli etc) that made him look better than he was

Roberto Carlos. Bullet of a left foot, defensively awful

Most players who have been through Newcastle in the last 5 years  eg Boumsong, Viana, Alan Smith etc

Freddy Adu. One of the great all time talking horses

Tony Dorigo. Played in class teams that masked his deficiencies

Deco....Takes playacting to a whole new level at the same time as being one of the most over-rated footballers of all time.

Ronaldo. Inter stood by the so and so for years while he dealt with his numerous "injuries" (funny how he couldn't play an entire game for Inter and then lasted through 7 games with Brazil in the World Cup) and he thanked them by forcing a transfer to Madrid after the World Cup. He is a spoiled and selfish brat.

The amazing Gaizka Mendieta, who has the awesome power of making his talent disappear when stepping on Italian soil.

that will do for starters

The one that always made me laugh was Georgio Kinkladze. I'm a Man City fan through and through, but the fact that he was lauded as world class used to make me howl! he had bloody good feet, great dribbler and passer, but that was it.

However he has still part of one of my favourite memories, skipping through the Southampton team ( defence isn't what they had at the time) and then proceeding to make Dave Beasant look a total fool.

As we used to say at Norwich when he was a youngster that his 4th touch is getting better, there was no fans sniggering more in the background than Norwich fans when someone paid 5.5m for him.

Currently, David Beckham.  Oh, over-rated - thought it said over-paid.

this has turned in to the stevie gerrard thread lol.

as a neutral, i think fabregas is currently better than gerrard. however neither will be proven either way til the have played in a decent team in a decent league.

Fabregas was scintilating in the first half of the season but has dropped off since. When he's older and has the physical strength/stamina to play like he did through an entire season I will agree but not right now.

If any centre midfielders in a like for like position are better than Gerrard then they play for Barcelona.

Quality, quality post.

Most overrated striker in world football today is Imrahimovic. I think MO'N summed it up at the last Euro Championship.
