Title: Perhaps I am a bit odd
Post by: TightEnd on May 14, 2008, 12:24:01 AM
Life wends its merry way normally..some ups, some downs and not a drama in sight

and then it happens. Out of nowhere I begin to think about a subject. Usually triggered by something or other, and then it all goes wrong

I simply have to immerse myself in this subject, find out everything I can about it and then, sated, life returns to non compulsive obsession for a short while.

I would like to share my last five compulsions with you in the hope,  dear blonde reader, that you might help me. Please.

1. Speedway.

I was at Wembley stadium for a meeting, and in the trophy cabinet on the ground floor was a collection of memorabilia of when they Sped (?), speeded (?), speedwayed (?) at Wembley. I can now tell you thanks to the wonders of the internet everything you could possibly wish to know about speedway, its history and current standings.

2.  Pavlov.

 On the occasion of Zenit St Petersburg reaching tomorrow night's UEFA Cup Final I began to look at this Russian city and discovered that it was the birthplace of Ivan Pavlov. Not satisfied with knowing that I looked at Pavlov.In the 1890s, Pavlov was investigating the gastric function of dogs by externalizing a salivary gland so he could collect, measure and analyze the saliva and what response it had to food under different conditions. He noticed that the dogs tended to salivate before food coated with chili powder was actually delivered to their mouths, and set out to investigate this "psychic secretion". I can now tell you anything you want to know about saliva.

3. Jim Corbett.

Jim was a tiger hunter at the end of the 1800s and is reckoned to be largely responsible for the fact that tigers still exist today as he persuaded the locals in the face of much evidence that tigers were not natural killers of humans. After watching the recent Attenborough series I googled "Tiger" and 72 hours later I was still at it.

Jim was employed at one point to kill the " Champawat Tiger" which was already credited with 200 human deaths in Nepal before the army drove her out. In India the tigress took another 234 lives. Many had sought her, some claimed to have shot her, but her reign continued unabated. After much personal debate, Corbett approached the ministry, and informed them that he would hunt the Champawat Tiger, but only under his terms: all the rewards for the tiger's kill were to be rescinded, and all other hunters to be recalled. The ministry agreed. During the months that Corbett tracked her, she continued to prey upon the hapless citizenry. When Corbett's well-placed shot finally felled the formidable beast, he discovered the reason for her diet of tender human flesh: she had been shot in the mouth some years earlier, thereby destroying her teeth beyond use on her natural prey.

4. Sets

I wasn't hitting any. Standard and googled to investigate some probabilities. In my voyages on about page 18 of "set" on google I discovered that of all the words in the English language, the word "set" has the most definitions! I am currently attempting to disporve that.

5. Bowling for Soup.

An American band, that I knew, and on my Ipod were such catchy tunes as "1985", "Girl all the bad guys want" and a cover of the Flock of Seagulls "I ran". Not content with liking the music, I wondered why they alighted on their band name. Rather intriguingly I found out that the name derives from The band got its name from “Bowling for Shit,” a routine from Steve Martin’s comedy album, “Wild and Crazy Guy,” that was released in 1978. Now I have to find this comedy album. No doubt that will then lead to a temporary Steve Martin knowledge hunt, which will lead to something else.

I am currently single.

You'll find your 'special someone' and until then, there are worse things you could be doing...so no worries.

Polysemy is a great word; for words that have more than one meaning.

Set then, is the most polysemous word in the English language. There is probably a joke somewhere involving an Irishman playing tennis with a parrot round at badger's place; but I'll leave that to the professionals

After the 2003 Carling Cup Final down in Cardiff, we, 3 friends and I randomly went to the Uni bar to celebrate Liverpool's win over Utd... There, we stumbled on a Bowling for Soup concert in the Uni that evening, so dressed in full Liverpool attire we went and had many a strange look amongst the rockers, goths and emo's!!

Does that help?

Tighty, I'm as bad as you with this thirst for googling stuff.

If I get stranded on a Desert Island, give me a PC, & google, & leave me there, I'll be happy as larry.

If I had kids, I'd not send them to school - I'd introuduce them to google, & educate them via that.

I too am single......

Shall we marry?

Why does speedway only go one way? Why does it go anti clockwise? Couldn't they go clockwise too or are the bikes made to turn into the corners only one way? I realise that is unlikely but I can't think of another reason why that would be like that?

Speedway bikes don't have gears so can't go uphill.

Speedway tracks are designed so that anti-clockwise is downhill. The extra speed the bikes go at also makes it more exciting for people to watch.

Trace, this has reminded me of another conversation we had on saturday night about haggis and why they always run in circles. we tried to catch you out with the old 1 leg shorter than the other but to your credit you didn't fall for it. apparently you'd seen a photo of one and all it's legs were the same

Here are the current 9 participants in the British Elite Speedway league

    * Belle Vue Aces
    * Coventry Bees
    * Eastbourne Eagles
    * Ipswich Witches
    * Lakeside Hammers
    * Peterborough Panthers
    * Poole Pirates
    * Swindon Robins
    * Wolverhampton Wolves

what an eclectic mix of locations! I am intrigued as to how this came about, with such provincial teams not based in major conurbations

As yet my enquiries as to why this is so are fruitless

On I press.

quite possibly unique to the UK.

in Poland speedway is a huge sport, you see the fans in their thousands walking through town wearing their colours on the day of a big meet. nearly all of the teams are from major cities

While travelling home on Sunday evening, I was a passenger in a car driving along the M25.

The driver had an interesting thought.

What would the difference in distance be between driving clockwise and anticlockwise around the M25, assuming you stayed in the left hand lane.

I thought it might keep you busy for a while...

I've only just seen this thread, Bowling for Soup are brilliant not many have even heard of them.

I reckon all those speedway places are also dog tracks - poor old rabbit doesn't stand much chance though.

Also there's not much else to do round most of the places so in years gone by they were just practising their get-aways.

this is impossible to judge imo as the m25 isnt a continuos motorway.... is split near dartford i thought? Or is that splitting hairs?

I assume it's the distance between the two lanes (20m?) mulitplied by 2 pi.

(Assuming the gap between lanes is constant, you treat the M25 as a perfect circle and you ignore that whole half bridge/half tunnel arrangement at Dartford :) )

the m25 problem should be fairly easy to get at least an approximate answer, unfortunately thoug it all goes a bit wrong in kent as you come up to the m26 as the 2 carriageways don't run alongside each other for quite a while.

findings from the last 48 hours

Evanescence: I knew the track "Bring me to life". A pseudo gothic metal classic sung by the charming Amy Lee who sounds like she must have had a classic trained voice. Up the tune popped on itunes, and now I know the works about Amy, and the group

Hedgehogs. Two new discoveries here. They apparently taste of pork. Furthermore the best way to eat one is to place one (dead one would hope) in a dual sided wooden container in a kiln. On removing said Hedgehog holding container from kiln and opening it you see a cooked hedgehog, minus spikes, which fall off once removed from the oven. Convenient huh?

David Frost still hosts "Through the keyhole". Sir David looks younger than he did 15 years ago. I suspect botox. Loyd Grossman has been replaced by an attractive lady rummaging thorugh C list celebs homes. Eve Pollard is still a panellist. She too looks younger than she di in the mid 1980s version.

The band Arcade Fire are from Canada. I like them. They know a place where "no cars go". That would be a pedestrian only walkway then. They then complicated the description by saying that no ships or even spaceships go there either. This is pretty obvious really. I am currently searching for parallell meanings in these lyrics.

The Honey Badger, found in most of Africa, is described as the "most fearless animal in the world". Fierce carnivores that kill snakes. Apparently their desire for honey is so strong that they have been found stung to death in beehives. More research required here.

When I was a kid there were Hedgehog flavoured crisps that did taste of pork. The firm that made them then had to withdraw them coz they were threatened by the trades description act or summat because they had no hedgehog in them.

hedgehog flavoured crisps actually started as a bit of a joke by a landlord of a pub in Montgomery mid wales, used to go to the pub occassionally.

Was stopped because there were no hedgehogs in them though - personally I'd have thought animal rights would win the day and they'd be pleased hedgehogs weren't harmed in the making of these crisps.
