Title: Bluesq.com GUKPT Newcastle: Day 1A - Interactive
Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 15, 2008, 03:06:39 AM
Howay the Lads as we are in Toon like?

Yes, welcome to the land of the Geordies, where internation turns any statement into a question and for the ladies, 5 degrees C is patently summer weather.

It's the last GUKPT before some card convention in the desert that's going on during the summer, meaning that this will also be the last blonde update for a while. Should I get the kitten picture out now for nostalgia's sake?

Anyway, at the last GUKPT, there was one of the players, I forgotten his name now, but he was a Bad Beat trader and he had circa 60,000 chips by the end of level 2, and was out before level 7. Basically he'd got it all in with A-K vs K-J on a K-high board in level 1 and then hit a gutshot to knock out Michael Greco soon after. The second hand made more headlines than the first, but it was the former that really got me thinking. Given that, generally, early on in a GUKPT, the standard is pretty low, should it be acceptable for a good player to put his whole stack at risk with say A-K on a K-high rainbow board against a complete unknown who has no history and no results? Does age come into it? Obviously I think the majority of players would stick their chips in more confidently against some 40/50 year old with no history than a spotty kid who looks like he's too young to play in the casino. Is it a complete (and therefore bad) gamble to do this very early, or do you need at least a couple of levels before deciding what your commitment range would be versus certain players as opposed to others? Or is it worthwhile in the sense that if it pays off, you'll be able to do a lot more things early on with 20k that you couldn't do with 10k, and also another good player might take his chips before you get the chance if you're not quick.

I've not really thought this through as such yet, and it probably shows, but I'd love to hear people's thoughts on whether you should be prepared to go broke (relatively) light in a tournament?

Play begins at 2pm.

See you there.

Good morning, and welcome to the Grosvenor Newcastle, allegedly home to the best buffet in the Grosvenor chain! Updates to follow on that later, but for the moment people spotted (largely on the walk from the front door to the press room) include Tony Phillips, Nik Persaud, Paul Jackson (apparently these days sponsored by Nescafe, according to the massive holdall he had with him for some reason) and Barry Neville, who managed to lock himself in the smoking cage - "Oh, no, I'm banged up!" Also playing today (evidence - I'm kipping in her room), fresh from her recent Blonde Bash victory ("I don't remember any of it, but everyone says I won"), Ms Jen Mason.

Play looks like it'll be starting on time. In the meantime, please enjoy my BlueSquare Promotional Item Of The Day:

Maybe everyone's saving up for Vegas or maybe it's just too far North, but it looks like an unusually low turnout today - just 63 runners registered so far. There were already 71 registered for tomorrow as of last night though, so it could well still make the 180 or so that they had for this leg last year.

Play is on the very verge of starting...

Early all-in on a 3h 2h 5d board, Keith Hawkins bets 1,500 (re-raised preflop) and Jonathan Lundy moves all-in. Eventual fold from the Camel.

Elsewhere, John Conroy has lost 1,000 or so, to Max Decorne next to him with A-Q against 6-6 on a A-9-6-2-7 board, a third diamond on the river slowing both players down and probably saving Conroy a few extra chips.

Lots of action already, particularly on Table 3. With less than 1k in the pot, Gareth Teatum bets (possibly raises, but this is the point at which I arrive at the table) a whopping 2250 on the river of a 5h 3s Qd 9s 9c board. After some considerable dweeling, Hongji Liu passes, muttering, "I slow-played it". Teatum shows the 6s...

---------------

A few minutes later and I'm back at Table 3, where now Julien Twigg has raised to 150, called by Mateyboy in seat 10. Matthew Buckland makes it 550 from the small blind, and they both call.

Flop - 6d 5s 8d - and Buckland bets a relatively restrained 500. Says tablemate Barry Neville, "Stay here, love, this is a very lively table." Indeed. Twigg passes, but Mr Matey calls.

Turn - 4d - and now Buckland checks and then passes to a 1k bet from Mr Matey. Mr Matey looks incredibly pleased with himself as he rakes in the chips.

Ben Vinson is down to the virtual felt, getting it all-in with Td 8d vs the Ac Aspades of I think David Birtles on the turn of a 6d 7d 6h 7h board and missing all his outs.

Eleswhere there's around 6k in the pot on a 2d Ahrt Th 4s 7s board, Matthew Osbourne checks to Steven King who bets 4,500. Osbourne does the umming and aahring associated with a hand that's usually behind but makes the call. King shows the Ac Ks, Osbourne mucks his Aspades Qs.

Good bet or are we in Toothinsville?

Pete Linton, "I've had more cards in first hour than I had in the whole of Manchester, I flopped a set of Kings and lost, I was lucky though because he flopped a flush and the turn was a fourth diamond which saved me. I've had Aces cracked, though I did call for and hit a gutshot..."

Paul Jackson and a valet just before the camera flash blinded her.

Tony Phillips calls a 1,625 bet on the river of a Ts 9c 2c Qh 4h board from James Browning who mucks, Tony shows Qs Jd and mutters something about not driving up for 8 hours on the motorway to pass there.

On Table Wernick, some preflop limpage results in an A-7-7 flop being dealt. It checks around to Mickey, who bets 150. Mark Lowe raises. "That's the last time I'm going to bluff today," announces Mickey, but he's probably bluffing. Either way, he folds.

Meanwhile please enjoy my Hoodie Of The Day So Far, Mr Mark Dalimre accorsing to the seating plan, although a small part of me suspects that his name be a typo of sorts? Either way, enjoy, or I'll get the kittens out.

Another astonishing hand from Table Wernick.

Somehow they make it 5 or 6-handed as far as the river of an 8c 8d 9s Ahrt Kh board, at which point Mr Richard Stanley bets a paltry 125 into the so-small-I-suspect-they-checked-it-down-all-the-way pot. Both Nick Gibson and John Conroy call him, and imagine their surprise as Mr Stanley turns over the very winning Ad Ks. Nick turns over the Ac, John turns over Aspades Tc. There is much hilarity.

More Wernick laydown shennanigans.

J-6-3

Paul Jackson leads out for 300, Mickey flat-calls. The awesomely named Fred Venus raises to 900. Paul Jackson re-raises to 2,000. Mickey folds a set of Threes. Venus moves in. Paul Jackson folds, I think J-6, Venus shows 6-6.

CT Law was our earliest casualty, down to 1,700 chips which went in with K-Q on a J-T-x- board but ran into A-J.

Famous Scottish Poet Roddy Burns ::) calls a 1,500 bet on the river of a 3d 5h 3h 7c Qh from Miroslaw Klys and confidently shows his flush Jh 9h, unfortunately he was drawing dead on the turn as Miroslaw had caught his full house already with 7d 7s.

Title: Re: Bluesq.com GUKPT Newcastle: Day 1A - Interactive
Post by: danafish on May 15, 2008, 04:02:35 PM
Nick Gibson calls a 500 bet from Mark Lowe on a Qs Qc Aspades flop, but he doesn't like either the 4d turn or the 800 that Lowe bets on it, and passes.

Looks like Julian Thew is up to around 15k and Dave Smith on around 12k. Full chip counts after the break. Last I checked, it looked like Barry Neville was early chip leader on around 25k, although no information on how he got them...

--------

Meanwhile there is uproar (well, mild consternation and a bit of muttering) on Table Jen. The board reads 8s 8h Qs 7s Kd and some of the players complaining that it is identical to the board in the previous hand except for the suit of the Seven. "Do you still have the same hole cards as last hand?" say I. "I wish," sighs Sam Trickett, "I had an Eight that time." "Live poker is rigged!" shouts Nik Persaud into his imaginary loudspeaker.

Tony Phillips is OUT, he raised Ahrt Qh and saw a Q-J-3 flop with one heart, bet and called. The turn is the Th and both players check. The river pairs the Ten and his opponent checks again, "So I think I'm good now and move in." He's called though by Q-J and is now out and off to play online.

Meanwhile Jen is having trouble with Kenny Burke who seems to be a player who refuses to fold any two suited cards preflop. Jen raises and Kenny is the only caller. Ad 6c Qc, Jen bets 350, Kenny calls.

7d

Jen bets 800, Kenny calls again.

3c

Jen check folds pretty quickly to the bet, Kenny shows the speculative Jc 4c.

There is a whole board out; it is Td Qh 3d 8c Jd and Richard Teatum bets around 1200. Joey Lovelady raises to around 3.6k, and Richard calls. Richard turns over Qc Js and is most upset to see that Joey is holding 4d 2d for the worst possible flush. He starts giggling anyway. Maybe to mask the pain. Joey's happy though. Obviously.

Saying something about counteracting the calories we will shortly be ingesting via the medium of sticky toffee pudding! Thanks, chef! This is awesome.

Incidentally I think Mr Lovelady is my current T-Shirt Of The Day. The award for T-Shirt I Don't Understand Of The Day however, goes to Mr Matthew Osbourne, below. At first I thought it said "GANGSTA" but on closer inspection it appears to say "ANGNSTA". I think. Anyone know what's going on?

Augusta?

Incidentally, with the lower than usual number of runners, we're not totally sure how the day will finish, I'm not sure that there will be enough players for us to play nine levels, so we might end up just playing down to 20 players or something.

A couple of random counts (more to follow shortly):

Nik Persaud -- 9.5k
Jerome Bradpiece -- 9k
Jen Mason -- 7.5k

Going well, Nik Persaud and Sam Trickett.

Ben Vinson has doubled up with Ad Td vs Barry Neville's Ac Qh despite Barry hitting a Queen as Ben turned a flush.

Nick Gibson went out just before the break.

Paul Jackson (7.3k) said, "Anytime he played a pot, the other player flopped top pair against him, or top pair with a better kicker, I don't think he won a single hand..."

Jeff Kimber is out, moving in for around 2.5k on a Kd 8c 7d 9h board with Ad Jd but finding the equally drawtabulous 9d 6d calling him. The river was the Kc which helped neither and Jeff is OUT.

Nik Persaud -- 9.5k
Julian Thew -- 6.5k

Jerome Bradpiece has, very kindly, just written a couple of hands down for me.

The first was explaining the exit of Merryweather, apparently all-in on the river and not the flop of the 8-8-7-2-x board, after they had both checked the flop.

The second was a multiway limped pot with Jerome holding 4c 2c on a Q-4-6 rainbow board. The small blind lead out for 200 and 3 people called including Jerome, the turn was the Kc, the small blind bet 875 and Jerome was the only caller. The river was the 3c and this time the small blind bet 2,000. Jerome raised to 7,000 and the small blind made a 'very good fold' of a set of fours.

Paul Jackson defends from the blinds against Ben Vinson's raise.

6s 9h Ks

Check check.

Kd

Paul check calls a 550 bet.

Js

Paul check calls a 1,000 bet. Ben announces, "Two pair," turning over A-9. Paul shows J-6 and says, "Don't be putting that one online. I was calling the river anyway, you were just unlucky."

Mark Bointon bets out on a Q-3-3 flop and takes it right there. Much to his disappointment. He shows Q-3.

----------------

Meanwhile on Table Jen, Kenny Burke bets 400 on a 4h 5c 8s flop, only for Jen to make it 1125. Burke dwells for a while, cradling in his hand enough chips to cover Jen. "It's either that or fold," he says, and opts for the latter. Jen back up to the heady heights of 7k. Go, my one percent!

Mr Paul Jackson has doubled up his super-shortstack, all in on the river holding Qh Qd on I believe a four diamond board.

Incidentally, in addition to the aforementioned Nescafe sponsorship deal, Mr Jackson is sporting what must be a record number of corporate logos on his hoodie - Bad Beat, Mansion and Ladbrokes. "Talk to me about sponsorship," says his shirt. His face says differently.

Pete Linton has doubled up, moving in on a Th 9d 5c flop, called by Gareth Teatum.

Pete - Ac Td
Gareth - Ts Qh

Turn - Ahrt
River - 8c

Pete now up to 13k or so.

Is it obvious from this photo who won the hand and who lost?

Paul Jackson is OUT. He raised Pete Linton's bet on a 8-6-4 two spade board before pushing on the offsuit 3 turn. Pete called with 8h 7h ahead of Qs Ts which was the way it stayed.

Mike Ellis has knocked out Kenny Burke with Kings vs Queens.

Thomas Middleton just made an excellent call for his whole stack after Paul Gardner check/raised him for most of his stack on a 6d 8s 6s board. Middleton called with Ad Ks, whilst Paul Gardner showed the dominated and drawing Aspades 4s. No spade on the 2d and Ac turn and river has left Gardner virtually on the felt.

It folds around to Jen on the cutoff, who makes it 600. Big blind Nik Persaud calls.

Flop - 4c 2h 6s - Nik checks, Jen bets 500 and Nick calls.

Turn - Ac - again Nik checks and now Jen makes it 1k. Nik peeks at his cards, and calls.

River - 4h - in much the same way, Nik checks, Jen bets 2k and Nik calls.

Jen shows 3c 5c. Obviously. Nik mucks. "Bad turn for you," says Jen. And then to me: "Don't report that hand." Jen back up to 11k.

And now Paul Gardner is OUT, he walked Kc Tc into John Conroy's Aces.

Thomas Middleton has just given a load of chips to Joey Lovelady, around 8k or so, after they saw an A-6-Q-9-T board with Joey's flopped set of sixes triumphing over Thomas' A-J.

Just before that Thomas Middleton hand, Joey Lovelady was down to around 20k. By way of explanation he merely pointed to John Conroy and his 25k or so, who slapped himself on the back of the hand.

Pre-break red-button-pushing from one young Mateyboy - he apparently raised it up with T-8 only for a gent I believe is Mark Tomblin to move all in. Apparently deciding he was live/couldn't be bothered coming back after dinner, Mateyboy called. Tomblin had Jacks.

Meanwhile, I can inform you that the buffet here is totally worthy of the newly-instituted Blondepoker Grosvenor Buffet Of The Day award. I managed to fit vegetable lasagne, an excellent chicken curry with rice, mixed vegetables, salad and the obligatory chips on a plate. Scampi was also available for those less repulsed by seafood. Mmm. By far the crowning glory though was dessert - as promised, a squishy, buttery sticky toffee pudding presented in its own pond of toffee sauce ("Is it soup?" asked a foreign-sounding gentleman) and topped with a scoop of banana ice cream. The chef promised me that each bowl contained a minimum of one million calories. Sugarlicious. :)

Barry Neville's stack somehow took a significant beating before the break - something about Pete Linton raising with any two - but doubled up his shortstack with Ac Kc all in against Aspades Th on the flop of a Jh Ad 9h 7d 8d board. Looks like he's now up to, er, 10k.

Other shortstacks on Table Neville include Gareth Teatum, who shoved for 6950 on a Qd 7s Qc. Julien Twigg dwelled up approximately foreever, and then disappointingly passed, leaving Gareth very slightly less short than before.

A Duo Of Double-Ups

Kerry Taylor has doubled up courtesy of a now very disgruntled Jonathan Lundy - Taylor was holding Ahrt 8d and moved in the the river, the board reading 8-J-7-9-A. Disgrundy Lundy mucked.

-----------

And back on Table Neville, David Knight is galloping ahead  and Gareth Teatum is further down to the felt than he's been all day. He makes it 1050 from the button on a 9c 2s 6d flop, called by Barry Neville - David Knight makes it 3650. Gareth calls and Barry gets out of the way.

Turn - 6h - and Knight wastes no time in gettign his last 4200 in. Gareth dwells up, has the clock called on him, dwells again very briefly, and calls.

Gareth Teatum - Kd 9d
David Knight - Ahrt Ad

And actually I missed the river, but it wasn't a King or a Nine, and Knight's crusade has won him the fair lady or, as may be in actual reality, the chips.

Sorry Aarun Bernard fans, he is OUT with pocket Nines against Dane Tallen's A-J, and Ace on the turn. Aarun is now involved in a ludicrous cash game with, among others, Skalie, Paul Jackson, Jeff Kimber, and most vocally, Henning Granstad, who seems to be going all in every hand and guffawing hysterically and good-naturedly at everything. "That is the Scandie way," he was saying...

Awesome Hair Owner Finn Stuart is OUT to the golden balls of Pete Linton. Pete made it 1050 from the cutoff and Finn in the small blind made it 4.2k. Pete thought about it for a bit, and then took back his 1050 and replaced it with a big ole stack of purple 1k chips. Finn called.

Pete Linton - 7h 7s
Finn Stuart - Ac Ks

I am aware that this is a coinflip situation, but please view board below for golden ballage.

Board - 6s 7d Aspades 9d 6c

Julian - Ahrt Qd
Ganesh - Th Tc

Board - 2d Kh 8h 6s Kd

No third GUKPT victory for the Thewster this time around. He must be Thewrious. Ganesh is in the general region of Chip Leader, on what looks like around 40k.

Yes indeed, also now fallen by the wayside is Jerome Bradpiece. He bet 1200 on the 7h 8s Kh flop, and just flat-called Kerry Taylor's raise to 4k - most of his stack. The turn came the Aspades and Taylor moved all in to cover Jerome; Jerome called.

(http://parade.calgarystampede.com/images/StampedeFloat.jpg) of the day....

Pete Linton raises to 1,050 from early position. Mickey Wernick calls from the small blind.

Ks Qh 7h

Mickey checks, Pete bets 1,375. Mickey raises to 6,375. Pete calls after a think.

Tc

Mickey checks again, Pete bets 8,500. Mickey passes. Pete shows Ahrt 3c.

And on the next table Sam Trickett is involved in a big pot as well, moving in on a Ad Kd 3c board, his opponent folds, he shows 8c. The two Notts boys are probably just behind Joey Lovelady in terms of the chip lead.

And in another instance of people whose names begin with J doing not so well, John Conroy has hit the rail. Joey Lovelady is merely an anomaly, clearly.

Anyway, John found himself all in against local boy Barry Smith on the turn of a 5-Q-3-5-J board.

John - Pocket Kings
Barry - Pocket Queens

Hamid Rowshanaei raises to 2k pre. Big blind Richard Stanley says, "You're a nice guy, I'll have a look." He looks at his cards. "You know, with this hand I can crack you. I call."

Flop - 2h Th 2c - and Richard bets 1.5k. Hamid promptly raises to 5k. Richard has clearly not cracked Hamid's hand. He folds.

Mark Lowe is OUT. His short stack push with J-T ran into Lynne Beaumont's Queens.

More chips for Pete.

Pete raises to 1,575 from early position, Joey Lovelady calls from the button, the small blind calls and Alan Vinnicombe calls from the big blind.

Qh Tc 5d

Check to Pete who bets 2,250. Everyone apart from Vinnicombe folds.

Ac

Check check.

3d

Now Alan Vinnicombe bets out 5k and Pete quickly calls. Alan can only show 9-8, whilst Pete A-8 was ahead on the flop even before he caught top pair on the turn.

Two hands later Alan moved in over the top of Barry Smith's raise with Ace King, Smith called with Tens. King came on the turn to ease Vinnicombe's furrowed brow. He's back above 25k now.

Gareth Teatum limps one off utg. Lynne Beaumont makes up the small blind, and Mickey Wernick checks the bb. Thus they see a flop:

Qd 3h 2h - Mickey bets 1k and Gareth calls. Lynne gets out of the way.

The turn is a King and Mickey bets 1.5k. Gareth folds, and the Leg-End (it's on the official player list so I can say that) takes the pot, flashing.

A King. Flashing a King.

Relative shortstacker Jason De Freitas makes it 1.8k utg, only for Ben Reynolds to move in for 14k, easily covering De Freitas.

Jason grins a bit. He dwells a bit. He checks his hole cards a bit. Then he folds. A shortstacker he remains.

Have left a grim-expressioned Jon Roboraab in the photo:

Alan Vinnicombe makes it 2k from fairly early position. Pete Linton calls, as does Ganesh Rao on the button.

Flop - Jd 7s 4h - and Vinnicombe checks. Pete bets 3375. Ganesh passes. Alan passes.

Says Pete, "See, I got it!" He doesn't show his cards. "Er, you have?" says someone. "Yes, I got his big blind!" says Pete, nodding towards Joey Lovelady. He shows pocket Fives. "I had 7-4," says a dejected Lovelady.

Ben Reynolds is OUT after running Tens into Keith Hawkins' Aces.

The Pete Linton/Joey Lovelady/Alan Vinnicombe sparring continues.

Joey raises to 2,150, Alan calls from the button, Pete calls from the big blind.

Aspades 3h 4h

Checked around.

7s

Pete bets 4,650. Joey passes and Alan calls.

6c

Pete checks, and Alan checks showing Kh Jh, but Pete was holding 9s 6s for the other flush draw and managed to make a pair on the river which is good enough to win. Joey Lovelady meanwhile is giggling at all of this.

We're down to 20 and finished slightly early tonight after Joey Lovelady raises to 2,150. Matey re-raises to 7,650 and then Steven King decided to move in for around 19k on top. Joey passed, but Steven was in trouble as he wasn't instantly called by Aces and could only show A-6 himself. The board came 4c 5s 6c Kh 5c as Joey Lovelady winced at seeing the four having passed Fours himself.

Soon after Mark Sudes was all-in with Kings on a J-T-8 board against Pete Linton, the latter holding Q-9. Naturally.

And after this abrupt finish all that remains for me to say is that we'll be back tomorrow from 2pm...Chip counts to follow.

agreed, Linton is pretty much different class. Wonder why opponents arent adapting though tbh.
