Well that was easy.

My first attempt.

Positioned myself under a cuboard, rasied myself up, then with hands behind back let myself fall towards the floor resulting in bouncing at great speed off. chest hitting back on the cuboard.  It was accomplished in just under 1.7 mins.

I tried the push-ups after reading the most attractive players thread but when I tried to lie down my hands didn't even reach the floor...

I'll have a craic. Have just started a get fit regime. That only lasted lasted a few days, then had to take 2 weeks off for a holiday then the GCBPT in Bristol. So, this seems the ideal way to get back into it :)

Running doesn't help you do push-ups!

Graham - try it.  Follow the training plan, and see how you get on.

after this move on to burpees.

I'm sure you can already do 100 with your training.  I could have managed it about 15 years ago when I was training daily.

Me and Rooky are running a half-marathon in October, and I've done no running at all this year.  Went out for a run this morning and boy was it hard work.  It was like starting out all over again.  Poker is not conducive to being able to run.

certainly in a session, but not consecutive. I had a friend who joined the navy when we were 17. they used to make them do 100 - 200 as punishments. I did 100 straight once back then, but that's 18 years ago.

I'll do the experiment tonight, see where I'm starting from. 30 - 40 probably.

think I might see if I can get some of my students to do it too.

It's a nice and easy programme - so it shouldn't put anyone off.

It's easier if you can already do 30-40 consecutive push-ups, but the missus is having a go at this as well, and she did 10 before starting this.

If you're a total weedy wimp like, er, me, you may find it easier to do a programme doing half-press-ups (from your knees rather than your feet) as even if the full ones kill you, anyone should be able to do 20 half press-ups. Once you've completed the programme on your knees, start again doing it properly and you'll be more likely to not collapse after four.

35 at an even pace. could of paused for a couple of seconds and got another 10 but that's cheating I'm guessing.
The goal has to be 100 without a pause so the tests have to be done like that.
going to do the whole 6 weeks because the students ranged from 10 - 25 and we're going to stick together.
first to 100 video it and put it up.

Starting a challenge like this believing you will fail is absolutely pointless.

The only real reason to fail is your willingness to fail.

Reprogramme your belief system. You have to KNOW that if you put the work in you can do it. The effort and sacrifices made by different individuals may vary (ie your general weight or level of fitness may also need attention for you to be able to exercise this hard). If you start out with excuses or low expectations you're wasting your time.

I'm quite envious of people with this mentality.  I'm not really a negative person, but I know I'm unfit and basically lazy.  Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be able to do it, but I find it hard to get started.  I'm sure if I could be programmed in some way where I'd already been doing it a month or perhaps some of my heavy frame was removed, I'd be more inclined, but I have a severe case of "can't be arsed" most of the time that I can't shake off, there's always something else I'd rather be doing, even if there's nothing else to actually do.

I feel slightly ashamed :D

OMG.  I've not watched any tennis for about 10 years.  Yesterday morning I wouldn't have known Nadal from Adam (or anyone else for that matter) but bloody hell - had telly on yesterday and he is GORGEOUS isn't he?!   ;kev; I do have a bit of a thing about nice strong arms too, but I didn't really notice his yesterday - was too busy being mesmirised by his rear view as he served from the bottom of my screen.

OK, you can get back on topic now :D

you can self programme. look into NLP and research advice on self hypnosis and motivation. Unless you have a genuine physical impediment, generally it's only you self imposed resistance to success that's stopping you achieving something like this. In anything, setting small achievable goals is the best route to success. These should be thought of as levels rather than weeks because unless you're in pretty good shape already I don't believe 6 weeks is achievable, BUT the goal is achievable by anyone who sets their mind to it.

I'm starting officially monday because I have half a dozen students and half a dozen lads from work doing it together. We're all starting from level one rather than anyone skipping forward.

I started the challenge but very quickly (after about 12 seconds) realised I was running before I could walk and that the full push-ups were't going to happen. Therefore I'm doing the challenge once on half-pushups, then hopefully doing it again properly once my arms stop feeling as though they're going to snap like twigs.

How are those that aren't in great shape (Kin might be getting a bit pudgy but is in decent shape) holding up with this one? MrsB quit this before she started (something about me F'ing off?) so I might have to try this myself....but need a bit of motivation.

How are those that aren't in great shape (Kin might be getting a bit pudgy but is in decent shape) holding up with this one? MrsB quit this before she started (something about me F'ing off?) so I might have to try this myself....but need a bit of motivation.

did 1.3 yesterday
15/13/12/12/30
totted them up and decided to do another 18 to make it 100 total, for the hell of it
then did 75 sit ups 25/20/15/10/5

testing the students tonight, see how they're getting on.
hoping for minimum 40 for myself, although I have to get a gym session in before hand and that tends to shave a few of my best set.

Being impatient, I am doing this, but with 6 day weeks and not 3 so am hoping to complete it in half the time

won't work

the reason you do it like it's laid out is you're building stamina in the muscles used for the exersize. The recovery time is as important (if not more so) as the workout time. If it's easy at the start you still shouldn't jump forward. The improvement needs to be gradual.

I understand rest time is important in exercise.

I do not see why you need more than a day of rest time though for an activity that only takes 10 minutes or so.

Rest time between the repetitions, yes, but 2 days rest between each set?

But what do I know - if it fails then I will do it as it is laid out.

Title: Re: hundred push ups challenge
Post by: AdamM on July 15, 2008, 10:53:07 AM
you're doing the 5th set to failure though. there should be some after effects. when you get to level 4 / 5 i would think you'll need your rest time more.

I must admit that I'm doing this programme in conjunction with 2 martial arts sessions and 3 gym sessions a week so I'm not exactly getting 'recovery time' either. if fact I'm doing a lot of exercises in the same plane of movement. Hopefuly I'm helping rather than hindering. The Pushups are basically used as a warm up before punching or pressing.

don't know if this helps but I came up with a simplified version for the martial arts class to follow. It's basically the same but this is what we're doing...

Level   Test
1.1   10 / 10 / 8 / 6 / max (7+) 60s rest
1.2   12 / 12 / 10 / 10 / max (10+) 90s rest
1.3   15 / 13 / 12 / 12 / max (15+) 120s rest
   Test (20 to move on)
2.1   12 / 12 / 9 / 7 / max (10+) 60s rest
2.2   16 / 13 / 11 / 11 / max (15+) 90s rest
2.3   15 / 15 / 12 / 12 / max (15+) 120s rest
   Test (30 to move on)
3.1   25 / 17 / 17 / 15 / max (25+) 60s
3.2   27 / 19 / 19 / 15 / max (25+) 90s
3.3   30 / 22 / 22 / 20 / max (27+) 120s
   Test (40 to move on)
4.1   27 / 20 / 20 / 17 / max (27+) 60s
4.2   27 / 21 / 21 / 18 / max (25+) 90s
4.3   30 / 22 / 22 / 20 / max (29+) 120s
   Test (50 to move on)
5.1   40 / 32 / 30 / 25 / max (40+) 60s
5.2   20 / 20 / 18 / 18 / 15 / 15 / 14 / max (40+) 45s
5.3   18 / 18 / 16 / 16 / 14 / 14 / 12 / max (40+) 30s
   Test (60 to move on)
6.1   56 / 45 / 42 / 40 max (56+) 60s
6.2   30 / 30 / 25 / 25 / 25 / 25 / 22 / 22 / max (56+) 45s
6.3   27 / 27 / 23 / 23 / 23 / 23 / 20 / 20 / max (56+) 30s

finished level 2 last night and did 45 so I'm moving to level 3 this week

managed exactly 25/17/17/15/25
target at the end of the week is low comparitively. I tested 45 on monday so I'm hoping for more that 50 on the next test.

how's everyone doing?
Kin must be there by now.

at the end of level 4 I had a dissapointing 53 for my test. I hadn't fully recovered from a heavy weekend but 50 was my target to move to level 5 so no problem.
HOWEVER, first set on level 5 was 40/32/30/25/40+
I attempted this the day after a taxing martial arts and weights session when I should have left an extra day gap.
failed for the first time in this programme and did 40/32/20/20/20 So I've decided what ever my test results next monday, I'm repeating level 5 until I can complete that set.
tonights actually looks easier as it's 20 / 20 / 18 / 18 / 15 / 15 / 14 / max (40+) with 45 secs rest
The last 40 looks nasty but up to there I think I'll be fine

I whacked my wrist, and so took a break from the schedule.  I started again last night, and actually did that set you mentioned (the first one with 8 levels).

It's amazing how easy it is on some days, and on others it's a real effort.

I know what you mean.
When I tested two weeks ago I got to 45 no problem and the burn kicked in suddenly and I stopped at 50
this week when I got 53 (hoping for 60) It was hurting from about 30.
realistically, for the final test, I don't want to be relying on will power / tenacity until the final 10-15
that needs the burn not to kick in til 80+
feel a long way from that.
perhaps 2 weeks at level 5 will show the improvement I'm looking for.

Saw this ages ago and just realised people have been doing on here.

Just done 1.1, is it crucial to not do push ups on the off days for the 1st week or 2?

certainly helps later on. you're looking to work to failure on your final set and you will want to be fully recovered for your following set.

when you get to level 5, trust me, you'll be needing the recovery time

good luck

yeah, you also have to remember that the muscles go into "grow" phase after a workout when they have their rest..(about 48 hours apparently) so if you continue to use them you don't actually build up as much as you could.

Yes, I read a Men's Health mag this week...no I didn't buy it :)

Anyone that films themselves doing a few press ups is a cock imo, whether they are smoking while doing it or not.

I'm going to have to film myself do 100. I have three seperate bets to collect and I'm buggered if I'm doing the test 3 times  :D

decent attempt.
programme says you should go back to level 5 if you fail the 100 test. depends how you feel though.
good luck next time.

I'm going to be trying this again when I go to the gym tonight. Will post result later.

Everyone seemed to be doing well and then just stopped posting.

Can still do 100 (well I could a few weeks back).  Focusing on my running now, preparation for London in April next year.

Blatant 'those policemen's biceps weren't big enough for me' post IMO.
