cantona is top

I also give you

PETER SCHMEICHEL (Brondby to Manchester United, £550,000, 1991)

ALAN SHEARER (Southampton to Blackburn Rovers, £3.6 million, 1992)

Shearer scored 112 Premiership goals for Blackburn in just 138 appearances and the Ewood Park coffers swelled by £15 million – a profit of more than £11 million – when he was sold to Newcastle United in 1996. Oh, and he helped to win Rovers the title.

Anelka to Arsenal for £500k?  50 league appearances with 23 goals.  Then a nice sale to Real Madrid for £23m.

Cantona and Shearer both proved to be bargains

Liverpool paid £20,000,000 for Torres ,its only been a year, how much would another team have to pay liverpool to get him now,

I'm not sure £20m will ever be classed as a bargain.

How much did Blackburn pay for Friedel  the years he has had there and then getting 2.5m for him at his age must put him in with a shout.

Shearer was a record at the time and I remember people saying it was alot of money for any player. A bargin should only be classed as a bargin when its cheap compared to alot of other fees paid around the same time.

We can argue over the semantics of if its classed as a prem transfer another day :)

My top 3 so far

Cantona

Schmeichel

Friedel

i have to concur that Shearer isnt a bargin. Even though long term he was great value for money he was a british record at the time.

Henri was great value at 11m but not a bargin

I know one or two United fans who are die hards who think Utd would never have won in Europe with Cantona. There was players as good as him and some even better technically, he wasn't always half a yard ahead like he was here in the foreigner deprived EPL of back then. He also didn't do much tracking back!

Tbh no i did not , I wouldn't really see it as a standard bearer for a good player though, When liverpool were struggling to qualify out of their group last season , i genuinely would have rathered they finished bottom of the group than have to face the indignity of playing in the UEFA cup . I mean cmon what sort of cup does not know the fav until the CL rejects enter it , and the league system they have now is a farce also. I'm sure arshavin is decent, but when he has been tracked by Barca, Madrid, chelski, and arsenal apparently , it seems somewhat bizarre if he ends up at spurs dont u think ?

Lol ok wasn't really going to get into arguement about the standard of the UEFA cup, but Arshavin was very much the star for Zenit St Petersberg in the final and rounds leading up to it. So ppl were aware of his talent pre Euros.

If Keane and Bent play the same amount of games Bent will score alot more then Keane. I have seen both play a fair amount live and don't believe Keane is a natural goalscorer like Bent. Want a token 5 quid bet? on goals per games for the season as long as they both player over 20 games?

He once scored an amazing  hat-trick away at Southampton in a 3-3 draw.

The goals he scored that day were voted 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in BBC Match of The Day's "Goal Of The Month".

As to his his fear of flying, I believe it was to do with a bad flight either to or back from his first World Cup, after that he became known as "The non-flying Dutchman".

Vidic came to the prem unheard of for £6-7mil, since then he been fantastic for them.  If they sold him tommorrow they'd get £15-20mil, even then he wouldnt be described as a bargain...  Great signing, but no bargain...

It is abs disgusting, a total average player who has let us down in World Cups and Euros...and also looks very ordinary in most Chelsea games, top flight football is very sick now with total averagness like Carrick earning megabucks for astroturf form, I cant watch it anymore and I know a lot who feel the same, Gazza, Shearer et all were a different class!
