Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Laxie on September 14, 2008, 10:46:18 AM I know it sounds daft, but try unplugging it and leave it for maybe 20-30 minutes before plugging it all back in again. Has worked for me in the past.
Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Joobie538 on September 14, 2008, 10:50:14 AM done that! - thought it may have been telling me to stop being so much of a degenerate, so i had a shower got dressed tidied up and it STILL won't work!
Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Laxie on September 14, 2008, 10:53:14 AM Well, I know what I would do next, but don't know how to explain it. Something about going into the back and loading 'last known good configuration' while praying that you have one. lol I'm sure one of the techno's will be on soon enough to talk you through it.

You could try getting dressed/undressed/showered again, only this time describe it in more detail. Title: Re: HELP! Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: ShatnerPants on September 14, 2008, 11:53:32 AM When I had that problem, I asked around, and got a good local chap in who took it away, wiped the hard disk, cleaned everything with a lovely feather duster ( I believe ) and reloaded everything that I needed it to have so it was beautifull and pristeen.
It worked for 2 days, then went tit's up again. When he came round next time he said the hardwear must be knackered, so I'll need new flangyflimflamthingmibibobs which'll cost a couple of hundred quid, with labour on top of that. And he bought a bill for £200 quid for the work he'd already done. I looked on Dell, and found I could have got a brand new WORKING box for about £150 straight off. So if I were you, I'd threaten it with a thrashing, then invest in a new one, whilst hiring a 4lb lump hammer to further discipline your rogue 'pooter. ( I see £7.47 seems to be a fair price ) Of course, a further investment of an extra £16.19 means you could upgrade to a 14lb sledge hammer, for guaranteed results. Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: LLevan on September 14, 2008, 11:57:01 AM Sounds like you have lost some of the DLL files required to start windows or some corrupt sectors on your hard drive.
1st possible fix is to try to get into windows using safe mode - to do this reboot the pc and keep your finger on the F8 button until you get a menu page giving you the option to use safe mode. If you can get into windows using safe mode I would suggest letting it load up then try doing a system restore once into windows. This might locate a missing DLL file that is stopping windows from loading normally. Report back once you have tried the above. Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Joobie538 on September 14, 2008, 12:06:35 PM ok tried that, it is just bringing up a blank screen with safe mode written in the corners!
Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: technolog on September 14, 2008, 12:18:40 PM You need to try 'System Restore' - setting your PC's configuration back to an earlier version that worked successfully.
Click Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore Then follow the prompts to select a date (in bold) where a 'restore point' was saved. Reboot whilst crossing fingers. If unsuccessful, boot into safe mode again and try restoring to an earlier date. Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Joobie538 on September 14, 2008, 12:22:09 PM can't get a start menu! stupid bloody pc!

(computer trouble) Post by: Joobie538 on September 14, 2008, 12:28:31 PM well drop kicking it out of the bedroom window is the next step! i'm currently trying all the options on the f8 menu! could be making it worse but i don't care! btw what's vga mode?
Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Jon MW on September 14, 2008, 12:30:32 PM can't get a start menu! stupid bloody pc! Do you mean that when you loaded it in safe mode it loaded but wouldn't give you a start menu? Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Grier78 on September 14, 2008, 12:40:00 PM The question is do you have a Windows XP CD?
If so then its an easy fix, if not then you need help. Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Joobie538 on September 14, 2008, 12:48:38 PM of course i don't have a windows xp cd! that would be FAR to easy!
Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Joobie538 on September 14, 2008, 12:51:38 PM as for safe mode, seems it has had the same problem (almost loaded then crashed last minute!) just a black screen with safe mode in the corner - can't do anything!
Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Jon MW on September 14, 2008, 12:56:53 PM Question for Techies:
You need to try 'System Restore' - setting your PC's configuration back to an earlier version that worked successfully. Click Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore ... Can this be run from DOS? Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: Grier78 on September 14, 2008, 01:11:04 PM Ok follow these instructions very carefully:
If a Packet Hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report. If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash, then the situation's hopeless and your systems gonna crash! If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel on another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall, and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse, then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang! When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk, and the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risk, then you have to flash your memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM. Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your mom. Title: Re: HELP! Doesn't sound promising for having a few tables open at once. Title: Re: HELP! (computer trouble) Post by: gatso on September 14, 2008, 10:33:16 PM the bloody thing keeps crashing while starting up - loads the windows xp screen then crashes, what can i do to try and fix this? was with a friend a couple of days ago and the exact same thing was happening to him with a new lappy. after we'd stared at it for a while and watched it crash a dozen times we discovered that he was resting the cooling outlet with the fan in it (there may be a more technical term for this) on his leg so it was overheating and shutting down after a couple of seconds. after leaving it 10 mins to cool it ran fine when put on a table |
