Title: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Post by: Rookie (Rodney) on October 07, 2008, 03:08:55 AM So here it is, I am going public with my entry into the London Marathon next year. I have kept it quiet for a while just so I don't embarass myself if I don't do it but that's no good as I am being a lazy bastard, so I will be posting updates on this thread.
I got my place about 2 months ago I think, thanks to an entry through agreeing on raising sponsorship for Spinal Research. Since then I could count on one hand how many times I have been out on a run. I just need to start this so it IS public and I do have to be ashamed if I don't do it. My Mum has done it a few times herself, completing it 3 times I think, and failing once. I remember one Sunday morning where I played football in the morning, and we went straight on the train to meet her while she was doing it and was struggling badly. I walked/jogged the last 16 miles with her! It was amazing, I didn't feel a thing in my legs then. But if I were to do that now I wouldn't imagine it would last very long before I was flat out on the floor! Now I have finished work again I have been asked to join a couple of football team's again, one on saturday and one on sunday. But I am too embarassed of my fitness at the moment to actually accept their invitation and join! I plan to begin when I wake up tomorrow Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. I will hope to have realistic targets set by new year. Maybe someone will start a book LOL Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Post by: Snatiramas on October 07, 2008, 08:17:04 AM It is quite easy Rookie.....you put a wall behind yourself mentally and say "I am not going back there".....you then start the journey one step at a time. when the rebellious child that lives inside all of us pops his head up, tell him to eff off, this journey is for you not for him.....
I would wish you good luck but it is not down to luck..........JFDI Phil Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Post by: Laxie on October 07, 2008, 08:25:37 AM Get yer arse outta bed ya slacker!!!

How many miles can you do at the moment? In my experience, once you can do more than say 6 miles without stopping, its suddenly gets a lot easier to add the number of miles to your personal best. My immediate advice, which I shall refine later is: Avoid the treadmill and stick to outdoor running, if you do use a treadmill, have it on an incline from start to finish. 1 mile on the road is better than 3 on the treadmill. Its better to have a long run and several days rest before another one, than to run every day. Plasters over your nipples are a must. Eat as much as you can, because you wont put any weight on while you are training Go for reasonable length walks on your rest days Hills hills hills The best way to add miles is to alternate long sessions with short sessions, so going 3 miles on monday, 1 mile on wednesday, 4 miles on friday, 2 miles on sunday etc etc. I'll try and think of some more as your diary progresses. Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Post by: Claw75 on October 07, 2008, 09:24:37 AM you can do it rooks! Sure you'll get loads of sponsorship from the generous blondes too :)up 3 and a half hours I reckon.

He's got just the thing to sort that out, but if you go with plasters Rooks...pictures or it didn't happen. rotflmfao Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Post by: kinboshi on October 07, 2008, 09:40:08 AM You'll do it easy Rooks. You've beat me to the diary thing though - I was going to do the same and write a diary about my training for London. Any bugger can do the marathon - it's just about doing the miles in training.
I ran a half-marathon on Sunday, my slowest ever time for a half-marathon, but I haven't done any proper training over the past 9 months+. Michelle (the missus) also did it, and she's gone from not being able to run for more than a few minutes at a time to running the whole 13.1 miles (in bloody horrible conditions as well) in the space of about a year or so. We're both aching now, but I can tell that Michelle's chuffed at doing it - and she should be. As for the training for a marathon, you can't cram it. That's the key. You need to be doing a regular number of miles a week before you start your marathon plan (which is often over a 16-week period). So really you want to be doing so many miles a week before January when you'll start the dedicated plan. I'm looking to be doing 35 miles a week before January. At the moment I'm only doing 10. Get yourself entered into some 10K runs and some half-marathons in the spring. I'm looking to do the London half (it's at Silverstone not in London, don't ask) and the Reading half (that is in Reading), both in March - which are ideal in the build-up for London. But if you enter some 10Ks for early 2009, you'll have a goal that's a lot nearer and that will get you training as it's all too easy to think 26 April is a long way away and to keep putting your training off. I'm on with my training now, though still without a confirmed place - I am hopefully of getting one in the next few weeks. Ran my fastest 13.1 miles on Sunday, though nearly died doing it. I have felt quite good Monday and Tuesday which is very different from the half marathons I did a couple of years ago. I have three target times in my head for the marathon already, a dream time, realistic challenge and a happy to accept time. Maybe if you set something like that it'll help focus the mind. Don't want to hijack your thread Rookie, but Kin, are you not wanting to do your big run at the time of the Silverstone run? When I first looked at the dates these two didn't seem to fit with what I expected. Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Post by: byronkincaid on October 07, 2008, 09:45:31 PM aiming to run a marathon was good for me cos it motivated me to get out of the house and any exercise is better than sitting in front of a computer eating doughnuts but I then found out that running long distances is not actually that good for you. most people would be better off joining a crossfit style gym imo although there are not that many of them in the UK atm.
if you scroll down to "Fringe Athletes" on this link it explains more http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/Foundations.pdf (http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/Foundations.pdf) I have just signed up for this course http://www.stemlerfit.com/page9.htm (http://www.stemlerfit.com/page9.htm) GL whatever you choose to do. I'm impressed by anyone who would even think about running a marathon, sounds so tough, hope the training goes well! Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Post by: Rookie (Rodney) on October 07, 2008, 10:34:49 PM Thanks guys.
The run to the shop is just under 4 miles all round. I managed to get there in 20 mins without stopping but on the way back it was a stop/start mission which ended with a rather large hill. Got back within 50 minutes but was shattered LOL. A long way to go me thinks. Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Post by: Linux on October 08, 2008, 01:40:13 PM Good luck with this rookie, have you checked out nike+. Its good for mapping out routes and getting accurate distances, you can then record thhem on a spreadsheet or something.

Title: Re: I need you! Another motivational based diary. Post by: Rookie (Rodney) on October 08, 2008, 10:28:21 PM Indoor football 8-9 tonight. Its about the only excercise I have been getting and I always enjoy it. Normally need a rest though but tonight felt good throughout.
I have badminton tomorrow afternoon although I forgot to book it tonight but it should be ok. Will go for another run on Friday I think and then I have a round of golf on Saturday which I am gonna embarass myself with so bad. I am only a beginner and my mate asked me if I wanted to play in his group, "The Stockwood Open". 8 players, obv i'll be last, obv i'll crash the buggy, but it should be a laugh anyway!
