So here it is, I am going public with my entry into the London Marathon next year. I have kept it quiet for a while just so I don't embarass myself if I don't do it but that's no good as I am being a lazy bastard, so I will be posting updates on this thread.

I got my place about 2 months ago I think, thanks to an entry through agreeing on raising sponsorship for Spinal Research. Since then I could count on one hand how many times I have been out on a run. I just need to start this so it IS public and I do have to be ashamed if I don't do it.

My Mum has done it a few times herself, completing it 3 times I think, and failing once. I remember one Sunday morning where I played football in the morning, and we went straight on the train to meet her while she was doing it and was struggling badly. I walked/jogged the last 16 miles with her! It was amazing, I didn't feel a thing in my legs then. But if I were to do that now I wouldn't imagine it would last very long before I was flat out on the floor!

Now I have finished work again I have been asked to join a couple of football team's again, one on saturday and one on sunday. But I am too embarassed of my fitness at the moment to actually accept their invitation and join!

I plan to begin when I wake up tomorrow morning afternoon. Using the motivation theme I will be running in the direction of the shops and picking up a Racing Post halfway through the run. Please do whatever you can by posting on here to make me do this. I am so rubbish at not being able to motivate myself and having to post here, but I just want to make sure I do do the bloody thing!

Cool

Any idea on what sort of time you're shooting for?

I honestly have no idea at the moment to be perfectly honest. I will hope to have realistic targets set by new year. Maybe someone will start a book LOL

gogogogoogogogo Rooks, you can do it!

I need something like this to motivate me into getting fit again and playing football every week, its pretty depressing that i gave it all up for no reason really 2 years ago.

I did pretty much the same, left my football team and never joined another one. So sick rly. Hopefully I can get back on the pitch again Smiley

It is quite easy Rookie.....you put a wall behind yourself mentally and say "I am not going  back there".....you then start the journey one step at a time. when the rebellious child that lives inside all of us pops his head up, tell him to eff off, this journey is for you not for him.....

I would wish you good luck but it is not down to luck..........JFDI

Good for you mate, back when I was thin didn't play poker I did a couple of marathons for charity.

How many miles can you do at the moment? In my experience, once you can do more than say 6 miles without stopping, its suddenly gets a lot easier to add the number of miles to your personal best.

My immediate advice, which I shall refine later is:

Avoid the treadmill and stick to outdoor running, if you do use a treadmill, have it on an incline from start to finish. 1 mile on the road is better than 3 on the treadmill.
Its better to have a long run and several days rest before another one, than to run every day.
Plasters over your nipples are a must.
Eat as much as you can, because you wont put any weight on while you are training
Go for reasonable length walks on your rest days
Hills hills hills
The best way to add miles is to alternate long sessions with short sessions, so going 3 miles on monday, 1 mile on wednesday, 4 miles on friday, 2 miles on sunday etc etc.

I'll try and think of some more as your diary progresses.
