Title: England's current LB, Is it just me ?
Post by: Karabiner on October 11, 2008, 06:52:17 PM
Or is the current England LB ****ley **** not half the player he was three or four years ago at Arsenal.

He seems far more error prone and less incisive although I am obviously biased in my perspective.

I have never really been a big fan of his abilitys, but unfortunatly he is our only candidate

Barry could play there. Bridge when fit. I'm sure there are others as well.

So my quote stands then?  If those are our only other options?

I agree Bridge is a better player but plays once every 2 months...

England have struggled for ages with a left back, even before A$hley they struggled for options, when he came along it was a Godsend.   Then he turned average and we're back to square 1.

Yeah, we don't have many options.

If Ashley Cole got injured our best option would be to persuade Stuart Pearce to put his boots back on.

I disagree, alright he made a mistake today but he had little to no support on the left hand side until SWP came on the pitch.

However he should never play for England again for cheating on Cheryl!!

looking back at the slo mo of the goal just now, obv cole screwed up but the centrebacks weren't exactly alert to the guy running straight past them while they stood there.

also upson made just as bad an error with his ball to james. it's just that we got away with that one and footy fans, like so many poker players, are results orientated. if that'd resulted in a goal and cole's hadn't it would've been upson instead being booed because of a single mistake.

cole is quality and those booing should be ashamed

This thread is rubbish...

Cole is the best English Left back by miles.

Except, there may be another:

Aidan Peter White (born 10 October 1991) is an English footballer who currently plays as a defender for Leeds United. White made his debut for the Leeds first team in a Football League Cup game against Crystal Palace on 26 August 2008,[1] being given a standing ovation from Leeds fans when he was replaced by substitute Bradley Johnson. He started again in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Bradford City, gaining the man of the match award and earning more praise from his manager Gary McAllister. White made his league début in the 2-0 win away at Carlisle United (in your eye ChipPrince) on 20 September 2008 and again the local lad received plaudits for his performance.

Cole suffered under Mourinho in a flat back four. Looks far better under Scolari. I dont remember too many right wingers making him look daft and never in a massive game - especially for England. His record in top level games is very good considering some of the opposition over the years (bar THAT Spain game - it was a friendly tho).

IMHO Bridge is shit. A catastrophe waiting to happen (again I should say). Lescott is decent if not great.

Cole by far the best IMO.

Nor mine. I really dislike the guy as a person but he's by far the best we have.

Him being booed isn't a surprise as every other fan from a London club will boo any mistake from him. The same morons who booed Lampard. They're all West Ham, Spurs and Arsenal fans who hate Chelsea. You also get the lower league fans who ar obviously "experts" at viewing top level football and decide to boo too.

Interesting, watched the morning paper show on sky sports where journalists debated this.

Lets face it Cole is everything people hate in footballers, but it makes no sense to boo him or the team. Nothing positive can come out from that. He has also been the best LB in this country for a while, decent form this season, much as it pains me.

''16 year old making his debut and performed very well considering. Quite small in size, but tidy enough, took no chances, passed into midfield when he could and cleared sensible. Lasted 60 minutes. Unlikely to start on Saturday, but Sheenan is suspended?  Left foot.''

Top drawer from Emile Heskey for Rooney to finish.  Rooney's been playing well, but was lacking the finish.  He wasn't going to miss that one.

No, I think Cole is.  But he was injured last night, and as Bridge wasn't playing well during the first half (he wasn't alone), I thought subbing him, moving Barry to left-back and then bringing someone else on in midfield would have been a good attacking option against a side I thought we should have beaten comfortably (which we did eventually).  However, I'm not a football manager and Capello has won more trophies than me, so I'm most probably wrong.

But maybe I'll stick to running.

No Bridge. No Barry.
Only disapointing part of the qualifying campagin so far is Bridge being 2nd choice left back.
If you can't get a game for your club you should have no chance getting one for England.
Bridge should move clubs or forget playing for England. Defoe and Crouch both moved to less of a "glamour" club to get games and they are both looking better for it.
If it's not your position you shouldn't play there just because you're versatile.
Richards was left out of one of Capello's squad and put in the U21's because Capello didn't want to pick him as a right back in his squad when he isn't playing there for City.

Bridge playing 15 games a season is still a better option than 15 other prem left backs who play 50 games a season...

That's debatable. But swap the 15 games for 8mins. Is that the figure he's played since May?
No debate.

Ask SWP if he thinks Bridge should stay.

I think he should be dropped purely for lack of bottle.  It's not so much that he doesn't play enough for Chelsea, more that he's happy not playing much for Chelsea.

A Gooner coming on here slagging off England's greatest LB is a bit LOL STFU and GTFO IMO. :o :-*

When are the goontards going to realise that Wenger wanted Ashley out of Arsenal as he (like many others) see Clichy as potentially a better LB than Cole. At the time, with Judas Campbell turning into a donkey, Wenger wanted another CB captable of playing at the higest level. He saw Gallas was unhappy at chelsea and with him already thinking about Clichy playing a LB he didn't mind Cole going to Chelsea as a swap deal. Otherwise why didnt the Arsenal board give a home grown player, who they've had since he was 12 years old, £5k more a week?

As for left backs in the world atm I would say Evra>Cole>Clichy imo. I haven't seen Abidal play recently, I've heard that he has been playing bad though.

So to finish off, tell me children: How many trophies have Arsenal won since Ashley left? ;carlocitrone;

A quick look on google tells me that Abidal played in the last match against Romania and Clichy played in the game before that.

All I know is that France have too many good lb's atm. :)

Good post. Problem for Arsenal is Gallas has turned into a bit of liability. Maybe Mourinho had it right that he's a full back after all.
