Title: First Black F1 World Champion
Post by: WYSINWYG on November 03, 2008, 11:06:07 PM
Every channel I've seen describe Lewis Hamilton in this way. Why?? It's almost bordering on racism.

To say 'Barak Obama, first black president of USA', is ok, cos it's completely relevant in a country which only fairly recently liberated black people, let alone letting them run the country. But F1?

rant over. Please let me know if I missed something that let even the BBC talk in these terms. :(

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7673955.stm

"He is the first black F1 driver, let alone the first black driver to have won a major championship, and that will be of interest to a great many people."
Why? What an idiot.

but he is the first black F1 driver?

yeah, I think this is the main reason they're saying it

the guy's suceeded in a white dominated sport, if you think that he had an equal playing field as there is no prejudice in this country or in the sport then you're living on another planet tbh

btw, do you realise how easily your own words could be construed as racist?

it's completely relevant in a country which only fairly recently liberated black people, let alone letting them run the country.

He is the first black guy to win the championship, just like tiger woods was the first black golfer to win a major. Its just a headline, time will pass and we will not be worried about this thread in the future.

I ain't gonna live in a world of refuse sacks and chalk boards.

It's not racist to say the word black.

I'd love to see what would be reported if a White bloke broke the 100m world record! Would White be in front of everything?! That's probably physically not possible though.

Or if there were to be a white heavyweight boxing champ.

it would be: "the first white man since"................

it would be extraordinary if a wite guy did that these days and should be reported as so IMO

I can 100% guarentee that if a white man broke the 100m record the fact he is white would not be reported on of this i'm absolutely sure therefore why is it reported that Lewis is black,it seems fair to say he's the 1st black f1 champ as that's a FACT but at the same time why wouldn't it be mentioned if it was the other way around is it because black people are still seen as a minority i really hope not and since there's a good chance in just over 24 hours Barack Obama will be the most powerful man in the world i would say we certainly live in a different world today were most people outwardly suggest that skin color doesn't mater but deep down am not so sure that's how they really feel.

lolz, no, not phrased like that in the same way that today's headlines aren't 'black man hamilton is world champ'

however 'mondatoo becomes first white 100m wr holder in 120 years' would be fine

Title: Re: First Black F1 World Champion
Post by: thetank on November 04, 2008, 12:33:10 AM
Black pioneers are celebrated as heroes. Twas ever thus. It's so not racist to describe someone as being the first black to do a certain thing.
To describe Lewis Hamilton as being the first black F1 champ is a celebration, and if anyone doesn't read it as such then they're probably the racist, and and they want to project their own bigotry (which they can't admit to themselves because it offends their liberal sensibilities) onto other people.

They only difference is saying hamilton is a man which i don't think anyone can have a problem with

I don't find describing him as black f1 driver instead of just f1 driver is neccesarily racist just why mention it at all is the issue for me ?

I don't so much care but just query why the fact he's black is relevant that is all ????? Saying he's british may be relevant to those that don't no who he is and can't tell this by looking at a picture of him in a newspaper

Anyone hear the Vanessa show BBC Londone radio?

It's now a question of what is black? Are you black if you are of mixed race.... Both Obama and Hamilton have white mothers....

So there is now a huge furore over whether either of them can technically claim the title of first black president /  F1 champ....

Anyone slightly perplexed as to why it matters so much?

I did remember reading a report about gangs in schools in London recently where mixed race kids had the worst of it, because the white kids wouldn't want them, as they considered them to be black, and the black gangs wouldn't have them either because they were too white.

Very similar to what I read about South Africa during and after the apartheid regime.  Those from an Asian background (by Asian I mean the Indian sub-continent) were not given the same rights as whites during apartheid, but were also sort of 'missed out' after apartheid when the new system was introduced that favoured the black majority.

lol at that.

Anyone who watched it and has actually looked at how many seconds Glock managed to lose in that last lap has to be suspicious.

I know he was on different tyres and all that blah blah blah but no one else on dry tyres went 28 seconds slower on their final lap.

Doesn't matter what colour the guy is there will always be a cloud over this championship because it was so dodgy.

Similar to every other year to be fair but that's another story.

No it wasn't.

See the posts above. It was clearly a fair and moral victory and I am in no way bitter about losing a small fortune on that little Brazilian fella.

You backed Robinho to win?  ;dingdell;

Surely if it was rigged, they'd have concocted something a little less complicated than a driver slowing down due to very heavy rain?

That's the only saving grace.

A spin would've been less obvious.

Maybe I'm wrong but it looks dodgy as hell imo.

Berlusconi - never has there been a more upstanding and principled politician.

:)up Should help solve UK Mortgage crisis, starting from the top down.

I've seen plenty of Bushisms, must get a list of Berlusconiisms compiled:

1. He sparked a minor diplomatic incident in 2005 by suggesting he had wooed Finnish President Tarja Halonen to ensure her backing for Italy to host the European Food Safety Authority.

"I had to use all my playboy tactics, even if they have not been used for some time," he said, prompting Helsinki to call in the Italian ambassador to explain the comments.

2. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has landed himself in hot water with comments that the Chinese under Mao Zedong "boiled babies".

3. "The West will continue to conquer peoples, even if it means a confrontation with another civilisation, Islam, firmly entrenched where it was 1,400 years ago."

4. "Italy is now a great country to invest in... today we have fewer communists and those who are still there deny having been one. Another reason to invest in Italy is that we have beautiful secretaries... superb girls."

5. "I am the Jesus Christ of politics."

6. To German MEP Martin Schulz, at start of Italy's EU presidency in July 2003:
"I know that in Italy there is a man producing a film on Nazi concentration camps - I shall put you forward for the role of Kapo (guard chosen from among the prisoners) - you would be perfect."
