Post by: bhoywonder on February 21, 2009, 03:59:16 PM
if a player bets out and then stares at you with intent, what message if any is he trying to get over to you?

1.From a seasoned player?

2.From a novice player?

strong...weak or likes your cap?

discuss...needing to tune up my live game tells

Sounds like he's trying to intimidate you and wants you to fold.

Unless he knows you know this and is trying to double bluff.

But then he could know you know he knows you know and be running a triple bluff.

If a guy stares at you with intent the message he's trying to get across is he's not afraid of confrontation. You can generally omit big hands at this point because if he's sitting on a big hand he ideally wants you to think he IS afraid of confrontation....cos obv he isn't.

If he generally doesn't stare at his opponents after betting he's probably doing his best to look as scary as possible so you'll fold and cry.  If he always stares at his opponents you're better off looking at his hands for clues.  If his fingers are crossed, he's weak.

The only message he's trying to put across is that he doesn't want you to know what he's got.

There is no message when someone stares. They have seen it on TV so think that they should do it as well.

Deciding whether someone is strong obviously needs more information.

1 - Was the person wearing shades?

2 - Was the person wearing a hoody?

3 - Was it a pokerstars hoody?

If you answer yes to all of the above then this person is obviously awesome so it doesn't matter how you read them you will be wrong.

Watch out for the following set up

"I raise"........

Serious face comes on.....

The stare starts......

The shades go on..........

The hood come up.........

He stares a bit more............

.........."Seven quid"

This guy is obviously a seasoned pro and should not be messed with. Just pass. He's going to win.

"the stare" is very person specific

The seasoned pro with a stare can often be "strong means weak".

Lets start with donkeys thou:

1. If they can hold your stare without problem they frequently have hit. I often find that the 'tell' can be found around the jaw line - but it is a difficult one to describe.

2. However if they stare but are totally statuesque and holding their breath - you can pretty much call and know your A high is good!

3. The best thing to do is ask them a question and see how they react - look for 'tension' - it is difficult to fake tension as it is an automotive response (this is the jawline thing i talk about). Obv if they are sat on thenuts they wont be tense.

4. In speech play - NEVER overstate your own hand - you might get a totally wrong read - try and deduce the strength of thiers by what you say "did you hit the turn - did the river help" type questions.

5. People will FREQUENTLY give off 100% tells. If you ask "you hit the ace right" - you can see a minute nod - they will have it.

The problems with tells is  you need to build them up over the night - Mike Caros book is a great starting point thou

depends what you mean by intent. if he's putting in effort to look threatening (this can be backed up by asking him a question that he can reply aggressively to) then he doesnt want a call. simples

If you play lot of internet poker it's important to believe tells are overrated.
