Title: Stuck with tens Post by: TightEnd on March 19, 2009, 01:02:11 AM Live MTT
18 left, money at 7 blinds 600-1200 Hero 15,000 UTG has just moved to the table, I know nothing about him. Never seen him before. Playing 14,000 he min raises to 2,400 Folded to Hero on the button with Th Tc Small blind is another unknown playing 9,000 Big blind a solid but aware, thinking player 22,000 I elect to call the min raise and evaluate the flop, unsure what his min raise means, unable to range it and aware that a standard re-raise commits circa half my stack and a push only gets called by hands that are beating me. Albeit if I push I win 4,000 if all fold At this point please evaluate that thinking. I suspect the reasoning to flat call there is pretty flawed! Anyway the SB calls and this prices in the BB 9,600 in the pot to a four way flop then Flop 6d 7c 8h the big blind fires out 6,000, UTG passes and its back to Th Tc Is pushing now just compounding the error of not doing so earlier? What is the range you'd put a solid thinking bb on to be betting out there, out of position, into an UTG raiser and tight arse here on the button? Given your answer to the above, do you push here post flop? Title: Re: Stuck with tens Post by: LeKnave on March 19, 2009, 01:07:02 AM slowly raise your hand with 1 finger extended plz.
+ shove preeeeeee. Title: Re: Stuck with tens Post by: Rookie (Rodney) on March 19, 2009, 01:12:51 AM wtf
Title: Re: Stuck with tens Post by: MC on March 19, 2009, 01:20:34 AM He'll often lead with pair+straight draw combo. Easy shove with utg out the way. With blockers to the straight we should be in good shape
Worst case scenario is probs 2 pair which we're at least live against. Unless he has the bottom end of the straight I guess. I shove pre as well. Worse hands might well fold but 4k is a good gain and by flatting you're giving all his worse hands a chance to hit/represent, plus having to deal with assumedly at least 1 blind's random hand. If you don't shove on this flop considering utg is out I'd prefer you'd folded pre! Title: Re: Stuck with tens Post by: tikay on March 19, 2009, 01:31:10 AM I think you out-thought yourself here Rich. Just get it all-in pre, & mop up the 4k. If he's trapped you, too bad. I'd rather Pass pre than smooth the Min-Raise here, but all-in Pre fits the bill best. Title: Re: Stuck with tens Post by: keilan303 on March 19, 2009, 01:49:34 AM I was going to post a similar thread, but as its a similar hand I will just add my 2 cents....I had a horrible situation last night with tens against an early position raiser. I had bullied the guy off one pot earlier which he wasn't pleased with (young aggressive player) only other hands I seen from him were AK and 44 (with a flopped set)....he made a 3.5x raise early doors, I had almost twice his chips so I just called looking to hit a big flop and would probably fold to a scary flop. I hit a great draw on the flop which he bet hard, I called (thinking about my blockers and implied odds) and hit my gin card on the turn. He shoved, I snapped, and he filled up on the river. I think we both played the hand the same way anyone else would, but if I knew I was only up against Jack Nine I would just get it all in pre and pick up a smaller pot. So my thinking with tens now... FOLD or SHOVE PRE! (if you know where you are!!!) I made the mistake of wanting to play a big pot with just a pair of tens, I was outdrawn on the flop and got a bit lucky on the turn but it ended up costing me more than half my stack...just not worth it in the long run...

Thanks ;-) Title: Re: Stuck with tens Post by: thetank on March 19, 2009, 02:39:57 AM I was just reading this thread whilst playing a small $5 game on IPoker, 16 left from 489 starters, blinds 2k/1k with 200 ante, I'm in 13th with just 19K left 10th has 25K, find 1010 in CO so shoved pre, SB has AA, gg me. yeah never folding there, just unlucky that someone had a hand behind.Found it spooky though that I got the hand when I was reading this thread Title: Re: Stuck with tens Post by: keilan303 on March 19, 2009, 08:45:45 AM Love that graphic keilan - where did you find that? Which I'd be ok with if you had any reason to believe you had the right candidates in the blinds to do it, but sadly I agree with the general consensus that this looks like as good a spot to get it in as you might be getting. Expect to get snapped by K8 ldo and lose the race.

The mistake in this hand is the priority and focus you give to the more marginal factors when considering your options pre-flop. These factors tempt you to want to evaluate a flop before committing. But you don't need to evaluate a flop to KNOW with a decent bb there's gonna be a MIN 8k in the pot when you're gonna have 12.5k. You don't need to evaluate a flop to know there are 18 left...7 get paid...and that 8k is gonna be hugely desirable to the hyenas round the table during this itchy-trigger-finger-time. And a flop isn't gonna change the fact you're gonna have last option on those vital $$'s. Position is a disadvantage when pot size is up around stack size of those involved imo. If you decide to play this hand you decide to commit to this hand cos of the stack sizes vs impending pot size, tournament situation and position...so you jam pre. Priority factors are not complete unknown UTG or indeed your flop evaluation skillz cos then you wont jam. Also pls don't say UTG is unknown and if you push he only calls you with better. Title: Re: Stuck with tens Post by: dousche on March 19, 2009, 01:24:55 PM i dont like the idea of 'evaluating the flop' with TT. you're going to pass on j/q/k high board? just ship it pre and hope he has enough brain cells to pass AJ
Title: Re: Stuck with tens Post by: Simon Galloway on March 19, 2009, 01:42:32 PM hope he has enough brain cells to pass AJ You haven't played much at Luton! Home of the impossible call, AJ here would be entirely standard for many. Not because of pot size, odds, payout structure, just because when the called, they'd be absolutely convinced they were currently in front.
